Objective: We assessed the clinical effectiveness of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in comparison with that of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in octogenarians with triple-vessel disease (TVD) or left main coronary artery (LMCA) disease.
Methods: From the CREDO-Kyoto registry cohort-2, 527 patients, who were ≥ 80 years of age and underwent the first coronary revascularization for TVD or LMCA disease, were divided into the CABG group (N = 151) and the PCI group (N = 376).
Results: The median and interquartile range of patient's age was 82 (81-84) in the CABG group and 83 (81-85) in the PCI group (P = 0.

Acquired pulmonary vein (PV) stenosis (PVS) is a complication following cardiac catheter intervention. However, very few cases of PVS after surgical ablation have been reported. We herein report a case of stenosis and occlusion at the left atrium to each pulmonary vein after surgical ablation.

Langerhans cell neoplasms, which include Langerhans cell histiocytosis and Langerhans cell sarcoma, are tumors that originate from dendritic cells. Langerhans cell sarcoma is defined as a high-grade neoplasm with overtly malignant cytological features and the Langerhans cell-like phenotype, and generally has a poorer prognosis and more aggressive phenotype than Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Insulin-like growth factor 2 messenger RNA-binding protein 3 (IGF2BP3 or IMP3) is an oncofetal protein that is expressed in various cancer types; its expression is often associated with a poor prognosis and aggressive phenotype.

The neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) plays a role in trafficking IgG and albumin and is thought to mediate intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy for certain diseases. IVIG can be used for the treatment of human Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH); however, the mechanism remains unclear. The expression and function of FcRn protein have not been studied in LCH, though the expression of FcRn messenger RNA (mRNA) have been reported.

We report a case of pulmonary artery aneurysm and pulmonary stenosis with a quadricuspid pulmonary valve in a 64-year-old woman. While pulmonary artery disease had been found as a child, she needed no treatment because of the absence of symptoms and her normal physical development. She began experiencing dyspnoea on exertion 3 years ago.

However, left inguinal lymph node metastasis was noted after 11 months, and left inguinal lymphadenectomy was performed. Twelve days postoperatively, the patient developed left inguinal lymphocele.

Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) is a transcription factor functioning in cellular adaptive responses to hypoxia. Recent studies have suggested that HIF-1 activity is upregulated by one of the important circadian clock genes, period circadian clock 2 (PER2); however, its underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, we show that PER2 functions as an effector protein for the recruitment of HIF-1α to its cognate enhancer sequence, the hypoxia-response element (HRE).

Killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) 2DL4 (CD158d) is a receptor for human leukocyte antigen-G. The function of KIR2DL4 has been reported in human natural killer cell lymphoma and mastocytosis, but not in Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH). Herein, we examined the expression and function of KIR2DL4 in LCHs.

Background: We present a case of perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa), which clinically and histologically mimics a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST).
Case Presentation: A 42-year-old woman was found to have a mass in the left flank during her annual medical checkup. Computed tomography examination revealed a submucosal tumor of the descending colon.

Cholesterol crystal embolization (CCE) is a rare systemic embolism caused by formation of cholesterol crystals from atherosclerotic plaques. CCE usually occurs during vascular manipulation, such as vascular surgery or endovascular catheter manipulation, or due to anticoagulation or thrombolytic therapy. We report a rare case of intestinal obstruction caused by spontaneous CCE.

We report an extremely rare case of pulmonary lipiodol embolism with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) after transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A 77-year-old man who was diagnosed with a huge HCC was admitted for TACE. Immediately after the procedure, this patient experienced severe dyspnea.

Purpose: Angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced vasoconstriction is mediated by changes in intracellular free Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)](i)) and myofilament Ca(2+) sensitivity. Protein kinase C- and Rho kinase-mediated signaling pathways are proposed for the regulation of the Ca(2+) sensitization mechanisms. We have demonstrated that sevoflurane inhibits Rho kinase-mediated contraction of isolated rat aortic smooth muscle.

Purpose: Arginine vasopressin (AVP) is a potent vasoconstrictor that is sometimes used for the treatment of refractory vasodilatory shock. AVP constricts vascular smooth muscle by increasing both intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca(2+)](i)) and myofilament Ca(2+) sensitivity. However, the modulation of AVP-mediated vasoconstriction by volatile anesthetics remains to be determined.

Background: Japanese cedar (Cryptmeria japonica; CJ) pollen and house dust mites are the two important aeroallergens in Japan. However, no epidemiological survey has been performed in Japan to investigate the relationship between month of birth and manifestations of allergic disease and sensitization.
Objective: This study evaluates the correlation between month of birth and sensitization to aeroallergens or the occurrence of allergic disease on 755 Japanese school children aged 12-13 years.
