Pharmacists are required to provide and collect medication information based on patients' health literacy and communication abilities to provide effective pharmaceutical care. Due to a lack of understanding of hearing loss and awareness of the inconvenience that patients with hearing loss face, appropriate actions for effective communication in medication education are not fully implemented. An e-learning system consisting of two courses, a learning course and an evaluation course, has been developed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study reviewed outcomes and prognostic factors for adult patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) after receiving syngeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) compared to other types.
  • Results showed a 5-year overall survival (OS) rate of 47.8% for the Syn group, with better OS for patients in first complete remission (CR1) compared to non-CR1 patients.
  • Syngeneic HSCT may be a viable alternative for AML patients in CR1, with comparable survival rates to autologous and allogeneic HSCT, despite higher relapse rates offset by lower non-relapse mortality.

Objectives: Osimertinib has been reported to be effective against central nervous system (CNS) metastasis from activating EGFR mutation-positive NSCLC. Nevertheless, the true antitumor effects of osimertinib alone for CNS metastasis are unclear because the aforementioned studies included previously irradiated cases, in which tumor shrinkage can occur later owing to the effects of radiotherapy (RT). This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of osimertinib against RT-naive CNS metastasis from sensitizing EGFR mutation-positive NSCLC.

A novel anti-cytomegalovirus (CMV) agent, letermovir (LMV), could reportedly improve the outcomes of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) recipients because of its high potential to prevent CMV reactivation. Therefore, 685 Japanese allo-HCT recipients, of whom ~80% had a high risk of CMV reactivation, were retrospectively analyzed to assess the impacts of prophylactic LMV on the incidence of clinically significant CMV (csCMV) infection as well as their transplant outcome. By comparing 114 patients who received LMV prophylaxis for a median 92 days to 571 patients without prophylaxis, we observed that prophylactic LMV could significantly (1) reduce the 180-day cumulative incidence of csCMV infection (44.

Is Ranawat triangle method accurate in estimating hip joint center in Japanese population?

J Orthop Sci

March 2021

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Kyushu University, 3-1-1 Maidashi. Higashi-ku, Fukuoka 812-8582, Japan.

Background: Little information has been available regarding the usefulness of Ranawat triangle method in estimating anatomical hip joint center in the Japanese population. In this study, we aimed to determine the accuracy of the method in estimating hip joint center.

Methods: Using digitally reconstructed radiographs of 123 normal hips (123 patients), we measured the hip joint center coordinates (Cx, Cy) with reference to the ipsilateral lowest point of the teardrop, the pelvic width, and the pelvic height.

Use of novel agents, including proteasome inhibitors and immunomodulatory drugs, has markedly improved outcomes in multiple myeloma (MM) patients. However, most MM patients eventually relapse and require salvage treatments. We report herein the result of a phase I/II study, performed from 2014 to 2017 to assess the feasibility and efficacy of a maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of lenalidomide (Len) combined with a fixed dose of once weekly subcutaneous (sc) 1.

Oncogenic drivers play central roles in tumorigenesis as well as in tumor cell survival and proliferation. Mutations of the epidermal growth factor receptor gene () that result in constitutive activation of the receptor tyrosine kinase have been identified as oncogenic drivers in a subset of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). PCR-based assays are usually adopted for the detection of mutations, but no methods to detect EGFR activation that are not based on mutation identification have been established in the clinical setting.

Introduction: Idiopathic systemic capillary leak syndrome is a rare and fatal disease due to the unexplained episodic attacks of capillary leakage of plasma from the intravascular into the interstitial space. The attack consists of three phases, a prodromal phase, peripheral leak phase and recruitment phase. During the peripheral leak phase, generalized edema, mainly in the trunk and extremities, with hemoconcentration and hypoalbuminemia occurs, while usually the visceral organs like lungs, brain, heart and kidneys seem not to be involved.
