Significance and limitations of routine p16/Ki-67 immunohistochemistry as a diagnostic tool for high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions of the uterine cervix.

Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic utility and limitations of routine p16 and Ki-67 immunohistochemistry (IHC) in detecting high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSILs) in the uterine cervix.

Methods: We reviewed 2,061 cervical biopsy records, including 271 morphologically indeterminate squamous lesions, evaluated using p16/Ki-67 IHC for HSIL detection or exclusion. HSIL was diagnosed based on p16 positivity and a high Ki-67 labeling index (Ki-LI).

Efficacy of telerehabilitation for patients after hip fracture surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: This study aimed to determine the efficacy of telerehabilitation for patients after hip fracture surgery through a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Methods: Eight electronic databases were searched in August 2022. The primary outcomes were mobility outcomes, activities of daily living (ADL) outcomes, and all adverse events, whereas the secondary outcomes were pain, health-related quality of life, and fall efficacy scale score.

Associations of fall history and fear of falling with multidimensional cognitive function in independent community-dwelling older adults: findings from ORANGE study.

Background: Falls and fear of falling (FoF) inhibit healthy longevity and have been suggested to be associated with cognitive function. However, the domains of cognitive function that are associated with them remain controversial. It is speculated that clarifying this will help in the assessment of health status and interventions in the community.

Clinical impact of perirenal thickness on short- and long-term outcomes of gastric cancer after curative surgery.

Background: A variety of factors for short- and long-term outcomes have been reported after radical resection for gastric cancer (GC). Obesity and emaciation had been reported to be a cause of poor short- and long-term outcomes with gastrointestinal cancer. However, the indicators are still controversial.

Empiric antifungal therapy in patients with cutaneous and subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis.

We encountered two cases of phaeohyphomycosis caused by Exophiala jeanselmei and E. oligosperma that were treated with fosravuconazole and terbinafine, respectively. Our cases were successfully treated with empiric therapy before the pathogen's species or antifungal sensitivity had been determined.

Background: Poor sleep quality has a negative effect on pain among older adults. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) state of emergency, lifestyle changes can cause psychologic stressors and lead to poor sleep quality.

Aim: This study examined whether sleep quality status was associated with low back or knee pain changes during the COVID-19 state of emergency among community-dwelling Japanese old-old adults.

Incidence, clinical characteristics, and diagnostic approach in transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy: The Kumamoto Cardiac Amyloidosis Survey.

Background: In recent years, transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) has received increasing attention; however, the epidemiology of ATTR-CM in Japan is not yet understood. In the Kumamoto Cardiac Amyloid Survey, we evaluated the current incidence, clinical characteristics, diagnostic approaches, and treatment strategies for ATTR-CM and compared tafamidis-prescription hospitals with regional hospitals.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective multicenter observational cohort study.

Topical efinaconazole: A sequential combination therapy with oral terbinafine for refractory tinea unguium.

Efinaconazole is a topical antifungal drug approved in Japan for tinea unguium. Although topical treatments generally have low cure rates with a prolonged therapy period, a Cochrane review confirmed that high-quality evidence supports the effectiveness of efinaconazole for the complete cure of tinea unguium. Combination therapy is a way to improve the cure rate of onychomycosis.

Retroperitoneal fibrous tumor recurring as lung metastases after 10 years: a case report.

Background: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a relatively rare mesenchymal tumor that mainly affects adults. Its prognosis is good after curative resection, but distant recurrences after 10 years or longer have been reported. Recurrent SFT usually arises as a local lesion; distant metastasis is rarely reported.

Physical Activity and Perceived Physical Fitness during the COVID-19 Epidemic: A Population of 40- to 69-Year-Olds in Japan.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an abrupt change in lifestyle for many people with restrictions, often leading to a decrease in physical activity (PA), and thus contributing to a negative perception of health status. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the COVID-19 epidemic on physical activity and perceived physical fitness in Japanese adults aged 40 to 69 years. Data were collected from an online survey conducted between October 19 and 28, 2020.

A case of repeat hepatectomy for liver metastasis from solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas: a case report.

Background: Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas is a rare tumor in young women, metastasizing in only 5-15% of cases, and most commonly to the liver. Although treatment guidelines have not been established, surgical resection is usually performed. We report a rare case of repeat hepatectomy for liver metastases after distal pancreatectomy with solid pseudopapillary neoplasm.

Perceived declining physical and cognitive fitness during the COVID-19 state of emergency among community-dwelling Japanese old-old adults.

Aim: Perceived health status, including physical and cognitive fitness, will be negatively associated with future health conditions among old-old adults. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused sudden changes in lifestyle. Thus, this study examined the associations of participation in an exercise class before the COVID-19 pandemic and the exercise habits and disruption to the rhythms of daily life during the COVID-19 state of emergency with perceived declining physical and cognitive fitness among community-dwelling old-old adults.

Fosravuconazole to treat severe onychomycosis in the elderly.

Fosravuconazole is a novel oral antifungal drug developed in Japan and used to treat tinea unguium since 2018. Its excellent oral absorbability and systemic bioavailability has enabled short-duration therapy of 3 months. Furthermore, no concomitant drugs are contraindicated due to the presence of the mild inhibitor of cytochrome P450 enzyme which is responsible for polypharmacy adverse effects.

Effects of Statin Plus Ezetimibe on Coronary Plaques in Acute Coronary Syndrome Patients with Diabetes Mellitus: Sub-Analysis of PRECISE-IVUS Trial.

Aim: Coronary plaque regression is weak in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). We evaluated whether dual lipid-lowering therapy (DLLT) with ezetimibe and atorvastatin attenuates coronary plaques in ACS patients with DM.

Methods: The prospective, randomized controlled, multicenter PRECISE-IVUS (Plaque Regression with Cholesterol Absorption Inhibitor or Synthesis Inhibitor Evaluated by Intravascular Ultrasound) trial assigned 246 patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention to DLLT or atorvastatin monotherapy and evaluated IVUS-derived changes in percent atheroma volume (ΔPAV), at baseline and 9-12-month follow-up, in 126 ACS cases, including 25 DM patients.

TIAM1 promotes chemoresistance and tumor invasiveness in colorectal cancer.

Accumulating evidence suggests that cancer cells with stem cell-like features have higher resistance to chemotherapeutic agents. Herein, we identified T-lymphoma invasion and metastasis-inducing protein-1 (TIAM1) as one of the Wnt-signaling associated genes which drives self-renewal and its expression is upregulated by cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs). TIAM1 expression was assessed in resected colorectal cancer (CRC) tissues from 300 patients who did or did not respond to chemotherapy.
