Precession modulates the poleward expansion of atmospheric circulation to the Arctic Ocean.

Nat Commun

Centre for Marine Magnetism (CM2, Department of Ocean Science and Engineering, Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, 518055, China.

Under sustained global warming, Arctic climate is projected to become more responsive to changes in North Pacific meridional heat transport as a result of teleconnections between low and high latitudes, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we reconstruct subarctic humidity changes over the past 400 kyr to investigate the role of low-to-high latitude interactions in regulating Arctic hydroclimate. Our reconstruction is based on precipitation-driven sediment input variations in the Subarctic North Pacific (SANP), which reveal a strong precessional cycle in subarctic humidity under the relatively low eccentricity variations that dominated the past four glacial-interglacial cycles.

In subsurface methanogenic ecosystems, the ubiquity of methylated-compound-using archaea-methylotrophic methanogens-implies that methylated compounds have an important role in the ecology and carbon cycling of such habitats. However, the origin of these chemicals remains unclear as there are no known energy metabolisms that generate methylated compounds de novo as a major product. Here we identified an energy metabolism in the subsurface-derived thermophilic anaerobe Zhaonella formicivorans that catalyses the conversion of formate to methanol, thereby producing methanol without requiring methylated compounds as an input.

Sister chromatid cohesion through the lens of biochemical experiments.

Curr Opin Cell Biol

January 2025

Department of Chromosome Science, National Institute of Genetics, Mishima, 411-8540, Japan; Department of Genetics, Graduate University for Advanced Studies (SOKENDAI), Mishima, 411-8540, Japan. Electronic address:

Faithful chromosome segregation in eukaryotes relies on physical cohesion between newly duplicated sister chromatids. Cohesin is a ring-shaped ATPase assembly that mediates sister chromatid cohesion through its ability to topologically entrap DNA. Cohesin, assisted by several regulatory proteins, binds to DNA prior to DNA replication and then holds two sister DNAs together when it encounters the replication machinery.

Sci Adv

January 2025

Life Science Center for Survival Dynamics, Tsukuba Advanced Research Alliance (TARA), University of Tsukuba, Tsukuba 305-8577, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • Parasitoid wasps, a highly diverse group of animals, use their venoms to manipulate the physiology of host larvae for their benefit.
  • Researchers discovered that a specific wasp can cause the death and dysfunction of its host's tissue precursors, a process called imaginal disc degradation (IDD).
  • The study identified two venom proteins crucial for IDD, showing how the wasp's venom strategically ensures the host grows but inhibits its transformation into adulthood.

Z boson events at the Large Hadron Collider can be selected with high purity and are sensitive to a diverse range of QCD phenomena. As a result, these events are often used to probe the nature of the strong force, improve Monte Carlo event generators, and search for deviations from standard model predictions. All previous measurements of Z boson production characterize the event properties using a small number of observables and present the results as differential cross sections in predetermined bins.

Department of Computational Biology and Medical Sciences, Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, The University of Tokyo, 5-1-5, Kashiwanoha, Kashiwa-shi, Chiba 277-8562, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • The mammalian mitochondrial protein synthesis system is responsible for synthesizing 13 crucial subunits for energy production, but the exact role of IF-3mt in translation initiation is still unclear.
  • Researchers created a mitochondrial translation system to explore IF-3mt's proofreading abilities, revealing it helps distinguish between different start codons for more accurate protein synthesis.
  • The findings indicate that IF-3mt not only supports initiation from standard AUG start codons but can also facilitate initiation from non-AUG codons like AUA, highlighting its adaptability in working with leaderless mRNAs.
