The construction of thin film heterostructures has been a widely successful archetype for fabricating materials with emergent physical properties. This strategy is of particular importance for the design of multilayer magnetic architectures in which direct interfacial spin-spin interactions between magnetic phases in dissimilar layers lead to emergent and controllable magnetic behavior. However, crystallographic incommensurability and atomic-scale interfacial disorder can severely limit the types of materials amenable to this strategy, as well as the performance of these systems.

Graduate School of Science and Technology, Kumamoto University, 2-39-1 Kurokami, Chuo-Ku, Kumamoto, 860-8555, Japan.

The applicability of a deep learning model for the virtual staining of plant cell structures using bright-field microscopy was investigated. The training dataset consisted of microscopy images of tobacco BY-2 cells with the plasma membrane stained with the fluorescent dye PlasMem Bright Green and the cell nucleus labeled with Histone-red fluorescent protein. The trained models successfully detected the expansion of cell nuclei upon aphidicolin treatment and a decrease in the cell aspect ratio upon propyzamide treatment, demonstrating its utility in cell morphometry.

Heterogeneous seafloor deposition of heavy microplastics in the North Pacific estimated over 65 years.

Mar Pollut Bull

January 2025

Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute, The University of Tokyo, 5-1-5 Kashiwanoha, Kashiwa, Chiba, Japan. Electronic address:

Marine plastic pollution has been a public concern for many decades; however, transport processes of heavy microplastics to the seafloor have long been overlooked given the difficulties in sampling and modeling. The distribution of heavy microplastic deposition on the seafloor in the North Pacific for 65 years since 1951, was estimated using a particle tracking model with 577,143,840 particles. The model revealed that 22 % of heavy microplastics were deposited over 100 km offshore from their release locations.

Background: The contact aspiration (CA) technique is often used to perform endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS); however, rescue strategies are necessary if CA fails to achieve recanalization. This study investigates the outcomes of incorporating stent retriever (SR) thrombectomy in the rescue strategy following failed CA.

Methods: EVT patients with failed CA attempts were identified from a large multicenter registry and stratified by rescue technique: CA alone or incorporating SR in the rescue strategy.

Drug Metabolism and Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kanazawa University, Kakuma-machi, Kanazawa, Japan; WPI Nano Life Science Institute (WPI-NanoLSI), Kanazawa University, Kakuma-machi, Kanazawa, Japan.

Pirfenidone (PIR) is used in the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. After oral administration, it is metabolized by cytochrome P450 1A2 to 5-hydroxylpirfenidone (5-OH PIR) and further oxidized to 5-carboxylpirfenidone (5-COOH PIR), a major metabolite excreted in the urine (90% of the dose). This study aimed to identify enzymes that catalyze the formation of 5-COOH PIR from 5-OH PIR in the human liver.

The Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research, Osaka University, Mihogaoka 8-1, Osaka, Ibaraki 567-0047, Japan.

SoxR containing a [2Fe-2S] cluster required for its transcription activity functions as a bacterial stress-response sensor that is activated through oxidation by redox-active compounds (RACs). SoxR from (EcSoxR) is activated by nearly all RACs nonspecifically. In contrast, nonenteric SoxRs such as (PaSoxR), and (ScSoxR) activate their target genes in response to RAC including endogenously produced metabolites.

Lomitapide, a microsomal triglyceride transfer protein inhibitor, is a lipid-lowering drug that inhibits chylomicron formation in enterocytes and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) formation in the liver. Previous studies have shown that very low-density lipoprotein and/or low-density lipoprotein (VLDL/LDL) can deliver certain drugs in addition to lipids. Thus, we hypothesized that serum concentrations of drugs that are more likely to be distributed to VLDL/LDL in the serum (referred to as "VLDL/LDL-philic drugs" in this paper) may be altered by co-administered lomitapide.
