Novel desensitization therapy of mesalamine intolerance in patients with ulcerative colitis.

Background: Mesalamine is the first-line drug for treating mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis (UC); however, some patients develop symptoms of intolerance. Although several desensitization methods have been reported, these desensitization regimens were rather complicated for physicians to prescribe in daily clinical practice; therefore, it has not yet become a major therapeutic option for intolerance patients. Thus, we developed an alternative desensitization protocol.

Background And Purpose: To develop a normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) model for predicting grade ≥ 2 acute oral mucositis (AOM) in head and neck cancer patients undergoing carbon-ion radiation therapy (CIRT).

Methods And Materials: We retrospectively included 178 patients, collecting clinical, dose-volume histogram (DVH), radiomics, and dosiomics data. Patients were randomly divided into training (70%) and test sets (30%).

Ultrasound-Guided Repair of the Anterior Talofibular Ligament With or Without Gould Augmentation Is Safe and Improves Clinical Outcomes for Chronic Lateral Ankle Instability: A Case Series of 49 Patients.

Objectives: We have previously shown that ultrasound-guided repair results in an accurate anchor placement and restores ankle joint stability using cadaveric models. The objective is to assess the safety and clinical outcomes of ultrasound-guided ATFL repair with or without augmentation.

Methods: Forty-nine patients with chronic lateral ankle instability underwent ultrasound-guided ATFL repair with or without augmentation.

Durvalumab with or without bevacizumab with transarterial chemoembolisation in hepatocellular carcinoma (EMERALD-1): a multiregional, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 study.

Background: Transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) is standard of care for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma that is amenable to embolisation; however, median progression-free survival is still approximately 7 months. We aimed to assess whether adding durvalumab, with or without bevacizumab, might improve progression-free survival.

Methods: In this multiregional, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 study (EMERALD-1), adults aged 18 years or older with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma amenable to embolisation, an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0 or 1 at enrolment, and at least one measurable intrahepatic lesion per modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumours (RECIST) were enrolled at 157 medical sites including research centres and general and specialist hospitals in 18 countries.

Transarterial chemoembolisation combined with lenvatinib plus pembrolizumab versus dual placebo for unresectable, non-metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (LEAP-012): a multicentre, randomised, double-blind, phase 3 study.

Pink-colored Cypridina luciferase from Cypridina (Vargula) hilgendorfii: Oxygen-triggered luminescence reaction following NAD(P)H-FMN flavin reductase reaction.

The pink-colored Cypridina luciferase (CypLase∗) from Cypridina (Vargula) hilgendorfii contains an unknown chromophore (CypL∗), derived from Cypridina luciferin (CypL). When CypLase∗ was treated with NAD(P)H-FMN flavin reductase (FRase) and NADH, the luminescence intensity in the reaction mixture increased significantly after gentle tapping. This observation suggests that CypL∗ in CypLase is enzymatically converted to CypL by the reduced flavin (FMNH) through the FRase reaction, and the resulting complex of CypL and CypLase reacts with O to emit light.

Establishment of a novel method for differentiating into dopaminergic neurons using charged hydrogels.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease primarily affecting the central nervous system and impacting both the motor system and non-motor systems. Although administration of L-DOPA is effective, it is not a fundamental treatment and has side effects such as diurnal fluctuation and dyskinesia, highlighting the need for new treatment methods. There is a growing interest in dopaminergic neuron transplantation as a potential treatment.

Cemiplimab in recurrent cervical cancer: Final analysis of overall survival in the phase III EMPOWER-Cervical 1/GOG-3016/ENGOT-cx9 trial.

Aim: Cemiplimab has demonstrated significantly longer survival than physician's choice of chemotherapy in patients with recurrent cervical cancer after first-line platinum-containing chemotherapy. We report the final survival analysis from the phase III randomized study (EMPOWER-Cervical 1/GOG-3016/ENGOT-cx9).

Methods: Cemiplimab (n = 304) or chemotherapy (n = 304) were administered every 3 weeks.

The left posterior superior temporal gyrus (pSTG) is thought to be involved in the pathophysiology and core symptoms of schizophrenia, although its structural connectivity has not yet been systematically investigated. Here, we aimed to evaluate its white matter (WM) connectivity with Broca's area, the thalamus, and the right pSTG. Eighty-three patients with schizophrenia and 141 healthy controls underwent diffusion-weighted imaging and T1-weighted three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging.

Interface dependent electron shunting in graphene-integrated intimately coupled photocatalytic biodegradation.

Intimately coupled photocatalytic biodegradation (ICPB) has been recently developed as an efficient wastewater treatment technique, particularly for removing persistent organic pollutants. However, photocatalyst/biofilm interaction in terms of photoelectron transfer and its effect on the overall performance of ICPB has not been explored. To investigate these points, interface-engineered composites of bismuth vanadate and reduced graphene oxide with low degree (BiVO/rGO-LC) and high degree of their contact (BiVO/rGO-HC) were fabricated and applied for ICPB.

Epidemiological trends in head and neck cancer in Nara Prefecture, Japan, from 2000-2021: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Objective: Epidemiological surveys were conducted in Nara Prefecture, Japan, to determine the prevalence of head and neck cancer in the region since 1986.

Methods: This study examined the dynamics of visits to 18 medical institutions treating head and neck cancer in Nara Prefecture from 2000 to 2021.

Results: A total of 8,605 patients were registered, with 4,788 being male and 3,787 female.

Objective: DESTINY-Breast03, a randomised, phase 3 trial, evaluated trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd) versus trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1) in patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER2)-positive unresectable and/or metastatic breast cancer who progressed on or after treatment with trastuzumab and a taxane. At the current data cut off overall survival analysis, T-DXd demonstrated a substantial improvement in overall survival over T-DM1. This secondary analysis use of DESTINY-Breast03 aimed to further evaluate the treatment differences using quality-adjusted survival time without symptoms or toxicity (Q-TWiST) methods.

Material And Methods: Six partially edentulous and edentulous maxillectomy defect models with 2 zygomatic implants each were obtained. References scans were obatined by using a laboratory scanner (inEos X5; Dentsply Sirona).

In-situ gamma-ray measurement to estimate depth distribution of Cs in farmland in Fukushima Prefecture.

Radioactive cesium released into the atmosphere caused by the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in March 2011 has contaminated the surrounding area. We confirmed the applicability of in-situ methods to evaluate the depth distribution of Cs by employing the ratio of Compton-scattering and photo-peak components (r) obtained from measured gamma-ray spectra. In the present study, we applied the in-situ method to farmlands in Fukushima Prefecture whose sites were disturbed by decontamination and plowing operations.

Combining therapeutic strategies with rehabilitation improves motor recovery in animal models of spinal cord injury: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Despite the lack of clinically validated strategies for treating spinal cord injury (SCI), combining therapeutic strategies with rehabilitation is believed to promote recovery of motor function; however, current research findings are inconsistent.

Objectives: To explore whether combination therapy involving therapy and rehabilitative training (CIRT) has a synergistic effect on motor function recovery in animal models of SCI.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies identified in a keyword search of 6 databases and extracted open-field motor scores from the Basso Mouse Scale (BMS) and the Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan Locomotor Rating Scale (BBB) for meta-analysis using a weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95 % CI.

Feasibility and Oncological Outcome of Patients Achieving Noninvasive Downstaging After Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor Plus Systemic Chemotherapy for Bladder Preservation Strategy in Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer.

Objective: To evaluate the oncological outcomes of selective bladder preservation therapy, comprising maximal TURBT plus neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) followed by 2nd-TURBT.

Methods: From 2012 to 2022, 110 localized muscle-invasive bladder cancer patients who desired bladder preservation (BP) received maximal TURBT plus NAC followed by restaging (CT scan+ 1st-TURBT) and 2nd-TURBT. Sixty-one patients with pure urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder (PUCUB) who achieved noninvasive downstaging (NID) after NAC and had no residual tumor at 2nd-TURBT underwent conservative treatment (BP group).

Holter electrocardiography findings in Fukuyama congenital muscular dystrophy.

Fukuyama congenital muscular dystrophy (FCMD) is the second most common childhood-onset muscular dystrophy in Japan. However, only a few comprehensive studies have investigated cardiac complications associated with FCMD, with none on arrhythmias. The present study evaluated 78 Holter electrocardiograms from 15 patients with FCMD.

Long-Term Safety and Efficacy of Bimekizumab in Axial Spondyloarthritis: 2-Year Results from Two Phase 3 Studies.

Objectives: Bimekizumab, a monoclonal IgG1 antibody that selectively inhibits interleukin (IL)‑17F in addition to IL-17A, previously demonstrated efficacy and was well tolerated to 1 year in patients with non-radiographic (nr-) and radiographic (r-) axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). Here, we report bimekizumab safety and efficacy to 2 years.

Methods: Patients completing week 52 in the phase 3 studies BE MOBILE 1 (nr-axSpA; NCT03928704) and 2 (r‑axSpA; NCT03928743) were eligible for an ongoing open‑label extension (OLE; NCT04436640).

Adjuvant effect of green tea intake on treatment of patients with acute venous thromboembolism.

Background: Although there have been reports that green tea intake has thromboprophylactic effect, it was still unknown whether it had adjuvant effect on the basis of conventional anticoagulation for patients diagnosed with venous thromboembolism (VTE).

Methods: VTE patients were retrospectively classified into green tea group and no green tea group in a 1:1 ratio using propensity score matching, based on whether they drank green tea during the 3 months' period after VTE diagnosis. Primary outcomes were VTE recurrence at 3 months after VTE diagnosis and VTE-related death during 3 months after VTE diagnosis.
