Background: The incidence of allergic diseases has been increasing in Japan. In particular, a serious decline in the age of onset of allergic rhinitis has been observed. Passive smoking from parental smoking has a significant impact on children's health; however, it is difficult to restrict smoking in the home.

V-ATPase in glioma stem cells: a novel metabolic vulnerability.

Background: Glioblastoma (GBM) is a lethal brain tumor characterized by the glioma stem cell (GSC) niche. The V-ATPase proton pump has been described as a crucial factor in sustaining GSC viability and tumorigenicity. Here we studied how patients-derived GSCs rely on V-ATPase activity to sustain mitochondrial bioenergetics and cell growth.

The efficacy of open transanal drainage tube against anastomotic leakage in left-sided colorectal cancer surgery: a propensity score matching study.

Background/aim: The effectiveness of a transanal drainage tube (TAT) for the prevention of anastomotic leakage after double stapling technique (DST) anastomosis in colorectal cancer has been reported. Previously, TATs had been placed and connected to drainage bags. It was considered that a higher decompression effect could be expected by inserting an open-type TAT, without connection to a drainage bag.

Association of clinical knowledge with patient care ownership among resident physicians: a nationwide cross-sectional study in Japan.

Purpose: Both clinical knowledge and patient care ownership (PCO) are crucial to the provision of quality patient care and should be acquired during training. However, the association between these two concepts is under-examined. Here, we conducted a nationwide cross-sectional study to investigate the association between clinical knowledge and PCO among resident physicians in Japan.

Role of mast cell in locally advanced rectal cancer treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy.

The pro-tumor effects of mast cell (MC) in the tumor microenvironment (TME) are becoming increasingly clear. Recently, MC were shown to contribute to tumor malignancy by supporting the migration of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), suggesting a relationship with tumor immunity. In the current study, we aimed to examine the correlation between MC infiltration and neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) response for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC).

Impact of psychotropic pro re nata prescription-monitoring programme on prescriptions for inpatients with psychiatric disorders: a retrospective observational study.

Background: Pro re nata (PRN) medication is used "as needed" for symptoms such as agitation and insomnia, in addition to regular daily pharmacotherapy of mental disorders. However, there is no high-quality evidence on the effectiveness of psychotropic PRN medications and concerns have been raised about their potential to contribute to polypharmacy. This study introduced a psychotropic PRN prescription-monitoring programme for psychiatric inpatients with the aim of examining the change before and after the implementation of the programme.

Prognostic impact of psychoeducation program completion on inpatients with schizophrenia: a pilot cohort study.

Background: Psychoeducation programs can reduce the risk of recurrence and readmission in patients with schizophrenia. However, almost all previous studies of program efficacy have included only patients completing the program, which may not be possible in all cases. The objective of this pilot cohort study was to compare the prognoses of inpatients with schizophrenia who did or did not complete a well-established institutional psychoeducation program.

Screening and prognostic roles of renal volumetry and scintigraphy in the assessment of living kidney transplant donors, considering the early recovery of the residual renal function.

Background: The existing criteria for living kidney donors (LKDs)in Japan are controversial. We evaluated the roles of computed tomography volumetry (CTV) and 99 m Tc-diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid (DTPA) scintigraphy in assessing preoperative and postoperative renal function and predicting early recovery of residual renal function.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical charts of 175 consecutive LKDs who underwent donor nephrectomy (DN) at our institution between 2006 and 2022.

Purpose: Dysfunction of vasomotor reactions due to arteriolar smooth muscle causes serious adverse events, such as loss of hemodynamic coherence. This in turn can increase risks of cardiovascular-related diseases. A noninvasive and quantitative evaluation of microvascular disorder is therefore very important for early diagnosis and treatment.

Tucatinib and trastuzumab in HER2-mutated metastatic breast cancer: a phase 2 basket trial.

Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2, also known as ERBB2) signaling promotes cell growth and differentiation, and is overexpressed in several tumor types, including breast, gastric and colorectal cancer. HER2-targeted therapies have shown clinical activity against these tumor types, resulting in regulatory approvals. However, the efficacy of HER2 therapies in tumors with HER2 mutations has not been widely investigated.

Microglia-resident immune cells in the central nervous system-undergo morphological and functional changes in response to signals from the local environment and mature into various homeostatic states. However, niche signals underlying microglial differentiation and maturation remain unknown. Here, we show that neuronal micronuclei (MN) transfer to microglia, which is followed by changing microglial characteristics during the postnatal period.

Epcoritamab-Induced fatal pleural effusion in diffuse large B-Cell lymphoma: a case report and literature review.

Epcoritamab, a bispecific T-cell engager (BiTE) antibody targeting CD3 and CD20, has shown significant efficacy in treating refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). However, its use can lead to severe side effects, such as tumor flare. Here, we report the case of an 84-year-old male with relapsed DLBCL who developed fatal unilateral pleural effusion following Epcoritamab treatment.

Therefore, the present study investigated whether the association between daily salt intake and blood pressure among community-dwelling older adults, including the very old people, based on their physical frailty status. This cross-sectional study used data from the SONIC study, a cohort study on older adults, collected between 2010 and 2012.

Cardiovascular safety of osteoanabolic agents.

Purpose: Several osteoanabolic agents have been developed to build new bone more efficiently than anti-resorptive drugs. Among them, romosozumab, an anti-sclerostin antibody, is a potent pharmacological tool to prevent fractures in osteoporosis patients. The efficacy of romosozumab in preventing osteoporotic fractures is robust.

The role of host plants, land cover and bioclimate in predicting the invasiveness of Aromia bungii on a global scale.

Aromia bungii is an invasive Cerambycidae of major concern at the global scale because of the damage caused to Rosaceae. Given the major phytosanitary relevance of A. bungii, predicting its spread in invaded areas and identifying possible new suitable regions worldwide remains a key action to develop appropriate management practices and optimise monitoring and early detection campaigns.

Ergostane-type steroids from mushrooms of Pleurotus genus.

Steroids are physiologically important compounds for animals, plants, and fungi, and they have significantly contributed to drug discovery for many years. Fungi mainly biosynthesize ergostane-type steroids such as ergosterol. However, after the basic skeleton is biosynthesized, chemical transformations can lead to the cleavage or rearrangement of the fundamental skeleton of steroids.

Effectiveness of single-energy metal artifact reduction algorithm in CT: application to contrast-enhanced CT with EVAR and coil embolization.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the single-energy metal artifact reduction (SEMAR) algorithm in reducing metal artifacts and enhancing image quality in contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) for patients undergoing endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) with coil embolization. Thirty-eight patients (mean age 81.0 ± 6 years; 31 men, 7 women) who underwent contrast-enhanced CT following EVAR and internal iliac artery coil embolization between September 2022 and May 2023 were retrospectively analyzed.

Cancer cells in the right subdiaphragmatic lavage may reflect peritoneal dissemination, but its prognostic significance is unknown. This study investigated recurrence-free survival (RFS), overall survival (OS), and recurrence patterns in patients with curatively resected endometrial cancer by cytology collection site. Peritoneal cytology was collected at the beginning of surgery by washing the pelvic and right subdiaphragmatic cavity separately.

Surgery is often the treatment of choice for lumbar disc herniation (LDH) with severe leg pain. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of Condoliase chemonucleolysis (CC) in patients who were nonambulatory because of severe leg pain. A total of 58 patients who underwent CC for conservative treatment-resistant LDH were included in this study.

Diffuseness of coronary artery disease impacts on immediate hemodynamic and predicted clinical outcomes.

Diffuse coronary artery disease (CAD) impacts the immediate hemodynamic and clinical outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We evaluated whether the diffuse pattern of CAD derived from angiographic Quantitative flow ratio (QFR) impacts the immediate hemodynamic outcome post-PCI and the medium term predicted vessel-oriented composite endpoint (VOCE). Paired pre-procedure QFRs were assessed in 503 patients and 1022 vessels in the Multivessel TALENT (MVT) trial.

Returning genetic risk information for hereditary cancers to participants in a population-based cohort study in Japan.

Large-scale population cohort studies that collect genomic information are tasked with returning an assessment of genetic risk for hereditary cancers to participants. While several studies have applied to return identified genetic risks to participants, comprehensive surveys of participants' understanding, feelings, and behaviors toward cancer risk remain to be conducted. Here, we report our experience and surveys of returning genetic risks to 100 carriers of pathogenic variants for hereditary cancers identified through whole genome sequencing of 50 000 individuals from the Tohoku Medical Megabank project, a population cohort study.

Role of transforming growth factor-β1 in regulating adipocyte progenitors.

Adipose tissue (AT) metabolism involves coordinating various cells and cellular processes to regulate energy storage, release, and overall metabolic homeostasis. Therein, macrophage and its cytokine are important in controlling tissue homeostasis. Among cytokines, the role of transforming growth factor-β1 (Tgf-β1), a cytokine abundantly expressed in CD206 M2-like macrophage and correlated with the expansion of AT and fibrosis, in AT metabolism, remains unknown.
