Aim Preventing leaving-without-being-seen (LWBS) in children is crucial due to their inability to seek medical care independently. Because there are no studies of LWBS in Japan, the extent of this problem in Japan and its impacts on healthcare are uncertain. The present study seeks to fill this gap by investigating LWBS after triage and identifying the associated factors.

Regional differences in the provision of home-visit rehabilitation services in Japan.

J Phys Ther Sci

January 2025

Department of Rehabilitation, School of Health Sciences, Tokyo University of Technology: 5-23-22 Nishikamata, Ota-ku, Tokyo 144-8535, Japan.

[Purpose] This study aimed to clarify regional disparities in the provision of home-visit rehabilitation services across all prefectures in Japan by performing a secondary analysis of government data. [Participants and Methods] The number of home-visit rehabilitation sessions per prefecture was determined to estimate regional disparities. Furthermore, the data for 2013 and 2021 were compared to investigate changes in home-visit rehabilitation provision.

Four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging (4D flow MRI) was utilized to analyze an aortic dissection with an aberrant right subclavian artery, revealing vortex formation and an increased oscillatory shear index (OSI), both indicative of variations in wall shear stress. An elevated OSI has been associated with an elevated risk of aortic dissection.

Subglottic stenosis after double-lumen tube (DLT) intubation is more likely to occur when an oversized DLT, specifically a 35 Fr DLT, is used in older, shorter women. Reintubation in such cases is challenging and may cause additional traumatic laryngitis. Tracheostomy is the best management for subglottic stenosis after DLT intubation.

Metyrapone is commonly used in the initial management of Cushing's syndrome to reduce hypercortisolemia, but its optimal dosage and timing can vary significantly between patients. Currently, there are limited guidelines on adjustment methods for its administration to individual needs. This study aimed to evaluate responsiveness of each patient to metyrapone and identify the patient characteristics associated with the indices of cortisol responsiveness following a low-dose metyrapone.

Background: Infectious disease agents pose significant threats to humans, wildlife, and livestock, with rodents carrying a third of these agents, many linked to human diseases. However, the range of pathogens in rodents and the hotspots for disease remain poorly understood.

Aim: This study evaluated the prevalence of viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens in rodents in riverine and non-riverine areas in selected districts in Zambia.

Introduction: As climate change advances, the looming threat of dengue fever, intricately tied to rising temperatures, intensifies, posing a substantial and enduring public health challenge in the Philippines. This study aims to investigate the historical and projected excess dengue disease burden attributable to temperature to help inform climate change policies, and guide resource allocation for strategic climate change and dengue disease interventions.

Methods: The study utilized established temperature-dengue risk functions to estimate the historical dengue burden attributable to increased temperatures.

Introduction: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social interaction and communication, along with restricted and repetitive behaviors. Both genetic and environmental factors contribute to ASD, with prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) and nicotine being linked to increased risk. Impaired adult hippocampal neurogenesis, particularly in the ventral region, is thought to play a role in the social deficits observed in ASD.

The manipulation of top-down interpretation as one's symptomatic body reduces the sense of body ownership.

Front Psychol

December 2024

Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Hiroshima University, Higashihiroshima, Hiroshima, Japan.

Sense of body ownership has been studied using rubber hand illusion (RHI) and full-body illusion (FBI). It has recently become clear that consciously interpreting a fake body as one's own in a top-down manner influences these body illusions. Furthermore, a study interestingly found that the influence of top-down interpretation was moderated by the degree of depersonalization, which was a symptom of a lack of sense of body ownership.

Training system for converting current visual information to bird's-eye view.

Front Psychol

December 2024

Faculty of Systems Information Science, Future University Hakodate, Hakodate, Japan.

Introduction: Effective decision-making in ball games requires the ability to convert positional information from a first-person perspective into a bird's-eye view. To address this need, we developed a virtual reality (VR)-based training system designed to enhance spatial cognition.

Methods: Using a head-mounted virtual reality display, participants engaged in tasks where they tracked multiple moving objects in a virtual space and reproduced their positions from a bird's-eye perspective.

The role of PPAR in fungal keratitis.

Front Immunol

January 2025

Department of Ophthalmology, The Second Hospital of Jilin University, Changchun, Jilin, China.

The treatment of fungal keratitis(FK) remains challenging due to delayed fungal detection and the limited effectiveness of antifungal drugs. Fungal infection can activate both innate and adaptive immune responses in the cornea. Fungi stimulate the production of oxidative stress-related biomarkers and mediate the infiltration of neutrophils, macrophages, and T cells.

International consensus guidance and Japanese clinical guidelines for myasthenia gravis (MG) recommend achieving minimal manifestations or better status (MM-or-better) as the severity component of the treatment goal. However, the subjective nature of determining MM can result in ambiguity regarding this category in clinical practice and clinical trials. This study analyzed severity metrics in a large number of MG patients to propose criteria for MM-or-better.

Impact of pre-crosslinks on the self-transformation performance of thermoplastic polyesters into vitrimers intermolecular transesterification.

RSC Adv

January 2025

Department of Life Science and Applied Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering, Nagoya Institute of Technology Gokiso-cho, Showa-ku Nagoya Aichi Japan 466-8555

We recently proposed a concept of self-transformation from thermoplastic polyesters into vitrimers intermolecular bond exchange as the cross-linking reaction. Key was the use of polyesters bearing hydroxyl side groups, which were cross-linked without additional cross-linkers through intermolecular transesterification in the presence of a suitable catalyst. In our previous study, a linear polyester was synthesized as the starting polymer by reacting dithiol monomers containing ester bonds (2-SH) with diepoxy monomers (2-epoxy) a thiol-epoxy reaction, generating hydroxyl side groups along the polyester chain.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients often suffer from complications such as anemia as the kidney function declines. More than 25% of CKD hemodialysis patients in China are complicated with renal anemia due to renal and hepatic impairment in the production of erythropoietin (EPO). In recent years, prolyl hydroxylase domain (PHD) inhibitors have been approved in China and Japan for the treatment of CKD patients complicated with anemia.
