Objective: Our study assessed the correlation between discrepancies in clinical and pathological T stages and overall survival (OS) in patients with upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC), including renal pelvis (UCP) and ureter (UCU) carcinoma, treated with radical surgery.

Methods: We utilized data from the Japanese Hospital-Based Cancer Registry (HBCR) to identify UTUC cases (n = 2376), consisting of UCP cases (n = 1196) and UCU cases (n = 1180), diagnosed with cTa-3N0M0 between 2012 and 2013. All cases were histologically confirmed and treated solely with radical surgery, excluding any chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Background: In randomized clinical trials, multiple-testing procedures, composite endpoints, and prioritized outcome approaches are increasingly used to analyze multiple binary outcomes. Previous studies have shown that correlations between outcomes influence their sample size requirements. Although sample size is an important factor affecting the choice of statistical methods, the power and required sample sizes of methods for analyzing multiple binary outcomes have yet to be compared under the influence of outcome correlations.

Background: Approximately 70% of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is underdiagnosed worldwide. We aimed to develop and validate a COPD self-evaluation questionnaire (COPD-EQ) that is better suited for COPD screening in China.

Methods: We developed a primary version of COPD-EQ based on the Delphi method.

Objective: Monoallelic variants in the transient receptor potential melastatin-related type 3 gene (TRPM3) have been associated with neurodevelopmental manifestations, but knowledge on the clinical manifestations and treatment options is limited. We characterized the clinical spectrum, highlighting particularly the epilepsy phenotype, and the effect of treatments.

Methods: We analyzed retrospectively the phenotypes and genotypes of 43 individuals with TRPM3 variants, acquired from GeneMatcher and collaborations (n = 21), and through a systematic literature search (n = 22).

Pyrrole in a cholesteric liquid crystal was discharged using a Tesla coil to generate pyrrole radicals, affording linear-shaped nano-ordered pyrrole oligomers. Subsequently, the electrochemical polymerisation of a pre-oriented pyrrole oligomer having good affinity for liquid crystals was performed to achieve polypyrrole-imprinted asymmetry from the cholesteric liquid crystal structure. The resultant polymers were analysed using polarising optical microscopy observations, scanning electron microscopy, electrochemistry, optical spectroscopy, and electron spin resonance.

Adrenomedullin (AM) exerts strong pulmonary vasodilatory effects. These effects are mediated in part by nitric oxide. Plasma AM levels are increased in patients with pulmonary hypertension and correlate with disease severity and poor outcomes.

Acetonitrile-Based Highly Concentrated Electrolytes for High-Power Organic Sodium-Ion Batteries.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, Tohoku University, 2-1-1 Katahira, Aoba-ku, Sendai, Miyagi 980-8577, Japan.

Sodium croconate, a high-voltage organic cathode material, can be applied to high-energy-density and cost-effective organic sodium-ion batteries (OSIBs) as an alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries. However, organic molecular cathodes generally dissolve into the electrolyte, leading to poor cyclability. Thus, an electrolyte that can address the present limitations and further facilitate the fabrication of highly reversible OSIBs must be developed.

Background: Little is known about snakebites by Naja samarensis, a species unique to the Philippines. The aim here is to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients bitten by this medically important cobra in the Eastern Visayas.

Methods: A hospital-based prospective study analysed the features of snakebite patients attending Eastern Visayas Medical Center between June 2022 and May 2023.

Thorough consideration of user experiences and the weighing of advantages and disadvantages are essential when implementing new technology in clinical practice. This article describes a primary care nurse's experience using two technologies to monitor lung congestion in six patient cases: a remote dielectric sensing device for non-invasive lung fluid measurement and a portable handheld ultrasound device. Both can support decision-making when assessing lung congestion in heart failure patients.

Introduction: The effects of imaging-based intravenous thrombolysis on outcomes based on patient sex remain unclear. We aimed to investigate whether outcomes among patients with stroke with an unknown onset time and treated with imaging-based intravenous thrombolysis are influenced by their sex.

Patients And Methods: This study was a pooled analysis of individual patient-level data acquired from the Evaluation of unknown Onset Stroke thrombolysis trials.

Introduction: Cytokine release syndrome is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy. Its occurrence in renal cell carcinoma treated with combination therapy is less recognized and poses significant management challenges.

Case Presentation: A 50-year-old male with metastatic renal cell carcinoma developed severe cytokine release syndrome after receiving ipilimumab-nivolumab combination therapy.

Introduction: Radical cystectomy for patients who previously underwent both radical prostatectomy and prostatic bed radiation is technically challenging.

Case Presentation: A 78-year-old man with a history of radical prostatectomy and salvage radiation for prostate cancer was referred to our hospital for radical treatment of bladder cancer. After two cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, he underwent robot-assisted radical cystectomy with real-time transrectal ultrasound guidance during dissection of the rectovesical space to minimize the risk of rectal injury.

Introduction: Choroidal metastasis from renal cell carcinoma is relatively rare and unresponsive to systemic treatment.

Case Presentation: A man in his eighties with left renal cell carcinoma and pulmonary metastasis developed visual impairment in the left eye during primary treatment with ipilimumab and nivolumab followed by secondary treatment with cabozantinib. Consultation with an ophthalmologist revealed choroidal metastasis, which was subsequently treated with local radiotherapy (3 Gy × 10 Fr), resulting in a significant reduction in the metastatic lesions.

Introduction: Laser ablation using a 980-nm wavelength diode laser, which is a new-generation laser, for recurrent bladder cancer is known to have a lower incidence of complications and recurrence than conventional transurethral resection of bladder tumor surgery. This is the first study to report the use of 980-nm diode laser ablation for recurrent non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer in Japan.

Case Presentation: A 73-year-old man underwent transurethral laser ablation for the treatment of recurrent non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer.
