December 2024

Department of Diabetes, Metabolism and Endocrinology, Japan Labor Health and Safety Organization, Tokyo Rosai Hospital, Tokyo, JPN.

Severe hypoglycemia (SH) is a significant risk, particularly in the elderly, and adrenal insufficiency (AI) may be a contributing factor. This study examines six cases of late dumping syndrome (LDS)-induced reactive hypoglycemia (RH), with AI as a potential trigger. Three of the six patients were diagnosed with AI, and one experienced a hypoglycemic coma.

Dissolution of struvite stones with ascorbic acid.

Urol Case Rep

January 2025

Department of Emergency and General Internal Medicine, Rakuwakai Marutamachi Hospital, 9-7 Jurakumawari-Matsushita-cho, Nakagyo-ku, 604-8401, Kyoto, Japan.

This case report describes an elderly man with a history of recurrent urinary tract infections and obstructive pyelonephritis with struvite stones caused by Proteus mirabilis. Despite appropriate antibiotic treatment, the stones increased in size, necessitating alternative therapy. This case highlights the use of ascorbic acid to lower the urine pH, which contributes to the dissolution of struvite stones.

Background: Dynamic conformal arc therapy (DCAT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) can achieve near equal plan quality in single-isocenter multiple target stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for brain metastases. This study aimed to investigate the impact of multi-leaf collimator (MLC) errors during beam delivery on the dose distribution for each technique.

Materials And Methods: A 10-mm diameter delineation of the three targets was employed on the computed tomography images of a head phantom, and the reference plans were created using the DCAT and VMAT.

A new genus and a new species of isosporoid coccidium (Apicomplexa: Conoidasida: Eimeriorina) are described and illustrated from green tree frogs () (Anura: Hylidae) imported from Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. The described species has disporocystic and tetrasporozoic oocysts without a Stieda body. Nine species originally belonging to the genus Schneider, 1881 in the family Eimeriidae Minchin, 1903 described from Anura are recognized as members of the new genus and new combinations of the species names are proposed.

The preclinical evaluation of drug-induced cardiotoxicity is critical for developing novel drug, helping to avoid drug wastage and post-marketing withdrawal. Although human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs) and the engineered heart organoid have been used for drug screening and mimicking disease models, they are always limited by the immaturity and lack of functionality of the cardiomyocytes. In this study, we constructed a Cardiomyocytes-on-a-Chip (CoC) that combines micro-grooves (MGs) and circulating mechanical stimulation to recapitulate the well-organized structure and stable beating of myocardial tissue.

Backgrounds: Intramuscular mRNA vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have a low intensity and latency of antibody response in patients with muscular disorders (MDs). However, the mechanisms involved in this phenomenon remain unknown. This study aimed to clarify the mechanism of the low immunogenicity of intramuscular SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccination in patients with MDs.

Simple Subjective Sleep Quality and Blood Pressure in Individuals With Optimal Sleep Duration: A Cross-Sectional Study.

J Clin Med Res

December 2024

Department of Public Health and Epidemiology, Graduate School of Medicine, University of the Ryukyus, Nishihara, Okinawa 903-0215, Japan.

Background: An individual's simple subjective feeling of having poor sleep quality usually occurs in combination with short sleep duration. Previous studies have mainly investigated the association between simple subjective sleep quality and blood pressure in a general population without considering the complicated issue regarding poor sleep quality and short sleep duration. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate whether poor sleep quality was associated with increased blood pressure in individuals with optimal sleep duration.

Background: Granulocyte and monocyte adsorption apheresis (GMA) is a therapeutic option for remission induction in the active ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. Effects of high processed blood volume of GMA as remission induction therapy on the long-term prognosis of UC patients have remained unclear. For this study, we investigated the relation between re-exacerbation of UC and the processed blood volume of GMA performed as induction therapy.

Background: Our hospital is a designated emergency hospital and accepts many patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Previously, after receiving a direct call from emergency services to request acceptance of an OHCA patient, the emergency room (ER) chief nurse notified medical staff. However, this method delayed ER preparations, so a Code Blue system (CB) was introduced in which the pending arrival of an OHCA patient was broadcast throughout the hospital.

Background: Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) has allowed patients with refractory out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) due to acute myocardial infarction (AMI) to receive primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI); they were previously ineligible.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to clarify the characteristics and outcomes of patients with OHCA secondary to AMI who underwent primary PCI during refractory cardiac arrest despite ECPR.

Methods: Patients with AMI and OHCA aged ≥18 years who underwent PCI with ECPR in 2013 to 2018 were identified from a multicenter ECPR registry in Japan.

Background: Pulmonary embolism (PE) as a preventable and potentially fatal noncommunicable disease was believed to have a lower incidence in Asian populations compared to Western populations. However, the incidence and mortality rates of PE in China and the impact of venous thromboembolism (VTE) prevention system constructions on PE still lack nationwide evidence.

Methods: For this nationwide hospital-based observational study, we used data from the National Hospital Quality Monitoring System (HQMS) and public database in China.

This article argues for a pluralization of the "platform capitalism" framework, suggesting we should think instead in terms of "platform capitalisms." This pluralization opens the way to a better account of how platforms work in different geocultural contexts, with our focus being on China, India and Japan. The article first outlines several roles the state has taken on in mediating platform capitalisms.

Statement Of The Problem: Previous longitudinal studies have found that patients with shortened dental arches (SDA) have a higher risk of long-term tooth loss than complete dental arch (CDA). However, the difference between SDA and CDA concerning oral function has yet to be demonstrated.

Purpose: We aimed to clarify the influence of molar occlusal support on oral function in SDA and CDA participants cross-sectionally and longitudinally.

A 46-year-old NF1 patient with sudden visual disturbance had a thrombotic vertebral artery aneurysm causing cerebral infarction. Endovascular internal trapping was performed successfully, with complete recovery and no neurological deficits. Although this is a rare case, it suggests that endovascular therapy could be successful for vascular lesions complicated by NF1.

Blunt abdominal trauma causing intraperitoneal injury and/or bleeding can be life-threatening, requiring immediate intervention. Diagnosing these cases can be challenging, especially when pre-existing conditions are involved. Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is a rare tumor of the appendix that can lead to pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Some women infected with (CT) are asymptomatic, while others experience lower abdominal discomfort when the inflammatory process extends to the fallopian tubes. Without treatment, salpingitis can progress to pelvic peritonitis and subsequently, peritonitis in the upper abdomen, a condition known as Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome, in some cases. A nucleic acid amplification assay is required for diagnosing CT infection.
