Sclerosing angiomatoid nodular transformation (SANT) is a rare benign vascular disease and mostly discovered incidentally in asymptomatic patients. Since SANT grows over time and it is often difficult to rule out malignancy on imaging, splenectomy is frequently the treatment of choice. Image findings of SANT have been reported as low signal intensity on T2-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images and a characteristic enhancement pattern on dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) and MR images.

Theoretical atomic momentum spectroscopy of diatomic, triatomic and polyatomic molecules.

Phys Chem Chem Phys

January 2025

Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, Tohoku University, Sendai 980-8577, Japan.

We present a general theory of quantum chemistry-based atomic momentum spectroscopy (QC-AMS) for predicting electron-atom Compton profiles due to the intramolecular motion of each atom in diatomic, triatomic and polyatomic molecules. The atomic motion is assumed to be decomposable into normal-mode molecular vibrations and molecular rotations, and the latter are treated classically. An accuracy assessment of the general theory is performed through comparisons with the AMS Compton profiles of HD and NO, predicted by the full quantum chemistry-based AMS theory that is precise but can work only for diatomic molecules.

Monomeric tri-coordinated bis(ferrocenyl)haloalumanes.

Dalton Trans

January 2025

Graduate School of Science and Technology, University of Tsukuba, 1-1-1 Tennodai, Tsukuba, Ibaraki 305-8571, Japan.

The reactions of the sterically demanding ferrocenyl lithium dimer (Fc*Li) (Fc* = 2,5-bis(3,5-di--butyl-phenyl)-1-ferrocenyl) with aluminum trihalides (AlCl, AlBr, and AlI) to furnish the corresponding monomeric bis(ferrocenyl)haloalumanes are reported. In the case of the reaction with AlI, an unexpected intramolecular 1,1'-aluminum migration in the ferrocenyl moiety was found to occur. Their monomeric structures with a tri-coordinated aluminum atom show affinitive Al⋯Fe interactions.

Transition metal carbonyl and transition metal dinitrogen are fundamental chemical complexes in many important biological and catalytic processes. Interestingly, binding between a transition metal (TM) atom and carbonyl or dinitrogen results in spin state change. However, no study has evaluated the spin-orbit (SO) effect along the association pathway of any TM-CO or TM-N bond.

Electrochemical devices that can operate at temperatures of 200-300 °C are expected to become the next-generation energy conversion devices in fuel cells and electrosynthesis, which are important for achieving carbon neutrality. Proton conductors based on phosphate glasses are being developed as candidate materials for such devices. We recently developed a glass proton conductor by using silicophosphoric acid based on the idea of solidifying phosphoric acid with silicon as a cross-linking glass framework.

We propose density functional theory (DFT)- and random forest (RF)-based theoretical and machine learning (ML) models, respectively, for predicting reaction barriers (Δ) using acrylate and methacrylate radical reactions as representatives. DFT is used to determine 100 transition state (TS) structures of both radicals, after which the obtained data are used to determine theoretical relationships (explained with Bell-Evans-Polanyi or Brønsted-Evans-Polanyi (BEP) and Marcus-like models) between Δ and stabilization energy of the product. Next, we construct several theoretical regression models for predicting Δ of the representative reactions based on our theoretical analyses, presenting an RF-based ML model that eases Δ predictions by circumventing time-consuming DFT calculations.

Counterregulatory roles of GLI2 and GLI3 in osteogenic differentiation via Gli1 expression.

J Cell Sci

January 2025

Department of Physiological Chemistry, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kyoto University, Kyoto 606-8501, Japan.

The GLI1/GLI2/GLI3 transcription factors mediate Hedgehog (Hh) signaling, which is crucial for bone development. During intramembranous ossification, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are directly differentiated into osteoblasts. Under basal and Hh pathway-stimulated conditions, primary cilia play essential roles in proteolytic processing of GLI3 to its repressor form (GLI3R), and in activation of GLI2.

January 2025

Department of Materials Physics, Graduate School of Engineering, Nagoya University, Chikusa-ku, Nagoya 464-8603, Japan.

The distribution of dopants in host crystals significantly influences the chemical and electronic properties of materials. Therefore, determining this distribution is crucial for optimizing material performance. The previously developed statistical ALCHEMI (St-ALCHEMI), an extension of the atom-location by channeling-enhanced microanalysis (ALCHEMI) technique, utilizes variations in electron channeling based on the beam direction relative to the crystal orientation.

A guide to CNN-based dense segmentation of neuronal EM images.

Microscopy (Oxf)

January 2025

Department of Biomedical Data Science, Fujita Health University School of Medicine, 1-98 Dengakugakubo, Kutsukake-cho, Toyoake 470-1192, Japan.

Large-scale reconstitution of neuronal circuits from volumetric electron microscopy images is a remarkable research goal in neuroanatomy. However, the large-scale reconstruction is a result of automatic segmentation using convolutional neural networks (CNNs), which is still challenging for general researchers to perform. This review focuses on two representative CNNs for dense neuronal segmentation: flood-filling networks (FFN) and local shape descriptors (LSD)-predicting U-Net (LSD network).

Exploring the Vibrational Coherences in the Ultrafast Electronic Relaxation of Pyrimidine Nucleobases and Nucleosides.

J Am Chem Soc

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, Graduate School of Science, Kyoto University, Kitashirakawa-Oiwakecho, Sakyo-Ku, Kyoto 606-8502, Japan.

We studied the vibrational coherences during the ultrafast internal conversions (ICs) of pyrimidine nucleobases and -sides in aqueous solutions and the gas phase with an instrumental resolution of 14 fs. The coherence of the same ring-breathing vibrational mode with a frequency of 750 cm was observed. In the gas phase, the vibrational coherence was transferred during IC from the ππ* to the nπ* state, and it survived for approximately 1 ps.

Adaptable Blueprint for Non-metal Near-Infrared Organic Photocatalysts by Aromatic Sulfones.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Graduate School of Environmental Science, Hokkaido University, N10, W5, Sapporo 060-0810, Japan.

We present a versatile approach to designing and utilizing high-performance nonmetal near-infrared (NIR) organic photocatalysts based on aromatic sulfones. Current NIR photocatalysts are mainly metal complexes and inorganic materials, while the few reported nonmetal organic NIR photocatalysts primarily use photosensitization to produce active species such as singlet oxygen. Our sulfone-rosamine-based redox photocatalyst demonstrates exceptional capabilities, including high ability for metal-free photo-oxidative bromination, intrinsically oxygen-independent redox reactions, and remarkable photostability with a turnover number (TON) exceeding 2800.

Temperature Dependence of Intermolecular Dynamics and Liquid Properties of Deep Eutectic Solvent, Reline.

J Phys Chem B

January 2025

Chemical, Biological and Macromolecular Sciences, S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, J. D. Block, Sec.III, Salt Lake, Kolkata, West Bengal 700 098, India.

We investigated the temperature dependence of the intermolecular dynamics, including intermolecular vibrations and collective orientational relaxation, of one of the most typical deep eutectic solvents, reline, using femtosecond Raman-induced Kerr effect spectroscopy (fs-RIKES), subpicosecond optical Kerr effect spectroscopy (ps-OKES), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. According to fs-RIKES results, the temperature-dependent intermolecular vibrational band peak at ∼90 cm exhibited a redshift with increasing temperature. The density-of-state (DOS) spectrum of reline by MD simulations reproduced this fs-RIKES spectral feature.
