Question: Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is frequently implemented for individuals with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is still unknown which specific components are effective, because CBT is a complex intervention with several components. The objective of this review was to assess the efficacy of CBT components for ADHD.

A 33-year-old Japanese man with a history of atopic dermatitis and asthma had never been diagnosed with any apparent glucose intolerance but had been aware of palpitations for >10 years. A 75g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at his physical examination in March 2021 revealed fasting hyperglycemia and post-load hypoglycemia. An OGTT recheck was performed in May 2021 and was normal.

Background: Reducing premature non-communicable disease (NCD) mortality is a global challenge. Sodium is thought to increase the risk of NCD via an effect of salt per se or high-salt foods on hypertension-induced cardiovascular disease (CVD) and gastrointestinal cancer. Further, the relative risk of CVD is reportedly more closely associated with sodium/potassium ratio than with sodium alone.

Dense granules (DG) are understudied apical organelles in merozoites, the malaria parasite stage that invades erythrocytes. Only six proteins have been identified which localize to DGs, despite that DG proteins play crucial roles in multiple steps of intraerythrocytic parasite development. To develop a tool for investigating DG structure and function, this study applied ultrastructural expansion microscopy (U-ExM) to visualize the ring-infected erythrocyte surface antigen (RESA) in Plasmodium falciparum merozoites.

Objectives: Rheumatoid arthritis often leads to debilitating damage in the elbow joint, which may require total elbow arthroplasty (TEA). The Kudo TEA is one of the unlinked type prostheses with reportedly favorable outcomes. However, there is limited information available regarding its long-term performance.

Mainstream anammox faces challenges in adapting to non-optimal temperatures and managing greenhouse gas emissions. This study investigates nitrogen removal and NO emissions in attached-growth anammox reactors subjected to rapid temperature shifts (15 - 55 °C). Temperature reductions to 15 - 25 °C had minimal impact on the anammox bacterial populations, with nitrogen removal rates of 0.

Tumor cell nuclear size (NS) indicates malignant potential in breast cancer; however, its clinical significance in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is unknown. Artificial intelligence (AI) can quantitatively evaluate histopathological findings. The aim was to measure NS in ESCC using AI and elucidate its clinical significance.

Background: Acute ischemia in the hind extremities is a dangerous disease that causes irreversible damage. Revascularization procedures are important to prevent muscle damage, but these treatments may induce additional damage, also known as ischemia-reperfusion injury. The role of free radicals as pivotal mediators of ischemia-reperfusion injury remains a prominent hypothesis.

Introduction: Deep neck infections are lethal diseases; however, factors related to their prevention remain unclear. The national emergency declaration in April 2020, in response to COVID-19, spurred widespread adoption of nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) such as hand washing, mask wearing, and social distancing.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study examines the impact of these interventions on the incidence of deep neck infections in Japan through interrupted time series analysis using National Database of Health Insurance Claims and Specific Health Checkups of Japan Open Data.

Introduction: To assess the susceptibility of epidemic influenza viruses to the four most used neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs) during the 2023-24 influenza season in Japan, we measured the 50% inhibitory concentration (IC) of oseltamivir, peramivir, zanamivir, and laninamivir in virus isolates from the sample of 100 patients.
Methods: Viral isolation was done using specimens obtained before and after treatment, with the type/subtype determined by RT-PCR using type- and subtype-specific primers. IC values were determined by a neuraminidase inhibition assay using a fluorescent substrate.

Transmission of plant viruses that replicate in the insect vector is known as persistent-propagative manner. However, it remains unclear whether such virus-vector relationships also occur between plant viruses and other biological vectors such as arthropod mites. In this study, we investigated the possible replication of orchid fleck virus (OFV), a segmented plant rhabdovirus, within its mite vector (Brevipalpus californicus s.

Lipid rafts are subdomains of the cell membrane that are rich in cholesterol and glycolipids, and they are involved in various cellular processes and pathophysiological mechanisms. However, the specific role of lipid rafts in hepatocyte dysfunction during the pathogenesis of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the impact of lipid rafts on insulin sensitivity and hepatocyte injury induced by saturated free fatty acids (sFFAs) using primary-cultured mouse hepatocytes.

Background: Total hip arthroplasty is the preferred treatment for advanced hip osteoarthritis, yet complications like hip dislocation (0.2 %-10 %) persist due to factors such as implant design, positioning, surgical technique, and patient-specific conditions. Impingement between prosthetic components or the acetabulum and proximal femur is a primary cause of instability.

Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) and acute non-allergic rhinosinusitis (ARS) often present with similar symptoms. While these are generally differentiated by history and occasionally by secretion cell counts, there are few data temporally comparing these conditions.
Methods: A prospective, observational study was conducted to assess nasal mucus properties, nasal obstruction, nasal secretion cells, and health related QOL during the acute phase (Day 5) and during a later phase of illness (Day 14/28).

Platinum-based chemotherapy in combination with anti-PD-L1 antibodies has shown promising results in mesothelioma. However, the immunological mechanisms underlying its efficacy are not well understood and there are no predictive biomarkers to guide treatment decisions. Here, we combine time course RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) of peripheral blood mononuclear cells with pre-treatment tumor transcriptome data from the single-arm, phase 2 DREAM trial (N = 54).

Objective: Seizure suppression using the neurofeedback (NFB) method by self-regulation of scalp-recorded slow cortical potential (SCP) is effective for patients with refractory focal epilepsy. However, the prolonged training period required prevents it from wider implementation as the standard treatment in clinical practice. Therefore, we examined whether it would be appropriate to shorten the training period, in spite of the small number of patients.
