The incidence of heat-related illnesses and heatstroke continues to rise amidst global warming. Hyperthermia triggers inflammation, coagulation, and progressive multiorgan dysfunction, and, at levels above 40 °C, can even lead to cell death. Blood cells, particularly granulocytes and platelets, are highly sensitive to heat, which promotes proinflammatory and procoagulant changes.

Background: Cerebral autoregulation is a robust regulatory mechanism that stabilizes cerebral blood flow in response to reduced blood pressure, thereby preventing cerebral ischaemia. Scientists have long believed that cerebral autoregulation also stabilizes cerebral blood flow against increases in intracranial pressure, which is another component that determines cerebral perfusion pressure. However, this idea was inconsistent with the complex pathogenesis of normal pressure hydrocephalus, which includes components of chronic cerebral ischaemia due to mild increases in intracranial pressure.

Background: Granulosa cell proliferation and survival are essential for normal ovarian function and follicular development. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have emerged as important regulators of cell proliferation and differentiation. Nuclear paraspeckle assembly transcript 1 (NEAT1) has been implicated in various cellular processes, but its role in granulosa cell function remains unclear.

Background: Recent advances in comprehensive gene analysis revealed the heterogeneity of mouse lung fibroblasts. However, direct comparisons between these subpopulations are limited due to challenges in isolating target subpopulations without gene-specific reporter mouse lines. In addition, the properties of lung lipofibroblasts remain unclear, particularly regarding the appropriate cell surface marker and the niche capacity for alveolar epithelial cell type 2 (AT2), an alveolar tissue stem cell.

Background: Despite advances in treatment, the incidence of postoperative complications following pancreatectomy remains high, leading to frequent hospital readmissions. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between preoperative exercise tolerance and the likelihood of unplanned readmission in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.
Methods: This retrospective analysis included 88 patients who underwent pancreatectomy at a single institution between July 2019 and September 2022 and focused on patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the restoration of coronary flow just before stent deployment and the final thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) flow grade 3 in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) whose initial TIMI flow grade ≤ 1. In primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), initial TMI flow grade ≤ 1 is closely associated with suboptimal final TIMI flow grade. We included 466 STEMI patients with initial TIMI flow grade ≤ 1 and divided into a restored flow group or an unrestored flow group according to the TIMI flow grade just before stent deployment.

Background: Mitochondria generate the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) necessary for eukaryotic cells, serving as their primary energy suppliers, and contribute to host defense by producing reactive oxygen species. In many critical illnesses, including sepsis, major trauma, and heatstroke, the vicious cycle between activated coagulation and inflammation results in tissue hypoxia-induced mitochondrial dysfunction, and impaired mitochondrial function contributes to thromboinflammation and cell death.
Methods: A computer-based online search was performed using the PubMed and Web of Science databases for published articles concerning sepsis, trauma, critical illnesses, cell death, mitochondria, inflammation, coagulopathy, and organ dysfunction.

Nutritional epidemiology aims to link dietary exposures to chronic disease, but the instruments for evaluating dietary intake are inaccurate. One way to identify unreliable data and the sources of errors is to compare estimated intakes with the total energy expenditure (TEE). In this study, we used the International Atomic Energy Agency Doubly Labeled Water Database to derive a predictive equation for TEE using 6,497 measures of TEE in individuals aged 4 to 96 years.

Hydrogen peroxide (HO) is a ubiquitous signal regulating many biological processes, including innate immunity, in all eukaryotes. However, it remains largely unknown that how transcription factors directly sense HO in eukaryotes. Here, we report that rice basic/helix-loop-helix transcription factor bHLH25 directly senses HO to confer resistance to multiple diseases caused by fungi or bacteria.

Functionally derivatized analogs of prenyl lipids are valuable tools for the detection and analysis of prenylated proteins. Using a biotinylated analog of geranylgeranyl, we previously identified Ykt6 as a substrate for a novel protein prenyltransferase, termed geranylgeranyltransferase type III (GGTase-III). Ykt6 is an evolutionarily highly conserved SNARE protein that regulates multiple intracellular trafficking pathways, including intra-Golgi trafficking and autophagosome-lysosome fusion.

Burnout among rheumatologists is globally prevalent, driven by low personal accomplishment, younger age, dissatisfaction with the specialty, low income, long hours, emotional exhaustion, and depersonalization. Mitigation strategies include addressing modifiable risk factors, implementing organizational measures, investing in well-being, assessing individual grit, and managing workload with virtual care platforms.

Severe acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) can occur during allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT), causing considerable morbidity and mortality. Although several biomarkers have been reported for predicting acute GVHD, they are often difficult to measure in routine clinical practice. Recently, three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) has been used to quantify the detailed bronchial structure, which might correlate with acute GVHD.
