Molybdenum requirements in low-birth-weight infants receiving parenteral and enteral nutrition.

JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr

July 1999

Department of Biochemistry, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Janeway Child Health Centre, St John's, Canada.

Background: Molybdenum (Mo) is an essential trace element required by three enzymatic systems, yet there are no reports of Mo deficiency in infants. Low-birth-weight infants (LBW) might be at risk for Mo deficiency because they are born before adequate stores for Mo can be acquired, they have rapid growth requiring increased intakes, and they frequently receive supplemental parenteral nutrition (SPN) and total parenteral nutrition (TPN) unsupplemented with molybdenum.

Methods: To investigate Mo requirements of LBW infants (n = 16; birth weight, 1336+/-351 g; gestational age, 29.

Symptomatic splenic hamartomas are rare in the pediatric age group, with only four previous reports in the literature. Splenic hamartoma has been reported as a solid homogeneous mass without calcification on CT and ultrasound (US), and only one previous report of the findings on MRI has been published. We report a case of a large symptomatic splenic hamartoma in a 14-year-old girl who presented with splenomegaly, pancytopenia and growth retardation.

Serum pseudocholinesterase and very-low-density lipoprotein metabolism.

J Clin Lab Anal

November 1994

Dr. Charles A. Janeway Child Health Centre, Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, Canada.

Serum pseudocholinesterase (PChE) was discovered in 1932. Since this protein mimics many of the catalytic properties of acetylcholinesterase, it has traditionally been referred to as PChE, even though its true biological function is unknown. Serum PChE is synthesized in the liver and secreted into the circulation as a sialated glycoprotein.
