The efficient clearance of dead and dying cells, efferocytosis, is critical to maintain tissue homeostasis. In the bone marrow microenvironment (BMME), this role is primarily fulfilled by professional bone marrow macrophages, but recent work has shown that mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) act as a non-professional phagocyte within the BMME. However, little is known about the mechanism and impact of efferocytosis on MSCs and on their function.

Purpose: We assessed the prognostic significance of quantification of perineural invasion on prostate biopsy.
Materials And Methods: We quantified actual perineural invasion foci in the entire prostate biopsy specimens from 724 patients and compared corresponding radical prostatectomy findings and long-term oncologic outcomes.
Results: No perineural invasion was detected in 524 (72.

Nineteen reports of 41 cases of acquired red cell elliptocytosis associated with a chronic myeloid neoplasm are described. Although the majority of cases have an abnormality of the long arm of chromosome 20, del(q20), several cases do not. Moreover, in one case a specific qualitative abnormality of red cell protein band 4.

It remains controversial if Gleason grade should be assigned to intraductal carcinoma of the prostate (IDC-P) and if the prognostic value of comedonecrosis associated with IDC-P is equivalent to that in conventional/invasive prostatic adenocarcinoma (CPA) as a Gleason grade 5 pattern. We herein assessed radical prostatectomy findings and postoperative outcomes in 287 patients with CPA exhibiting any Gleason pattern 5. Our cases were divided into 4 cohorts according to the absence or presence of necrosis within CPA and/or IDC-P: Cohort-1) no necrosis in CPA/IDC-P (n = 179; 62.

The study of marrow-resident mesodermal progenitors can provide important insight into their role in influencing normal and aberrant hematopoiesis as occurs in acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). In addition, the chemokine competency of these cells provides links to the inflammatory milieu of the marrow microenvironment with additional implications for normal and malignant hematopoiesis. While in vivo studies have elucidated the structure and function of the marrow niche in murine genetic models, corollary human studies have not been feasible, and thus the use of culture-adapted mesodermal cells has provided insights into the role these rare endogenous niche cells play in physiologic, malignant, and inflammatory states.

Background: Adolescent and Young Adults (AYAs) are an underserved, high-risk population. Identifying health care utilization patterns, and particularly acute care visits, is important as these are high-intensity, expensive services. We investigated whether differences exist in health care utilization between the AYA lymphoma population compared to their older adult counterparts.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is observed in various conditions, from metabolic syndromes to mitochondrial diseases. Moreover, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) transfer is an emerging mechanism that enables the restoration of mitochondrial function in damaged cells. Hence, developing a technology that facilitates the transfer of mtDNA can be a promising strategy for the treatment of these conditions.

Background: Screening guidelines for childhood cancer survivors treated with radiation currently rely on broad anatomic irradiated regions (IR) to determine risk for late effects. However, contemporary radiotherapy techniques use volumetric dosimetry (VD) to define organ-specific exposure, which supports more specific screening recommendations that could be less costly.
Patients And Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 132 patients treated with irradiation at Children's Hospital Los Angeles from 2000 to 2016.

Background: Older adults with myeloid malignancies are susceptible to treatment-related toxicities. Accelerated DNAm age, or the difference between DNA methylation (DNAm) age and chronological age, may be used as a biomarker of biological age to predict individuals at risk. In addition, cancer treatment can also lead to accelerated DNAm age.

Introduction: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is associated with poor outcomes and is generally incurable. Therefore, understanding preferences of older adults with AML is critical. We sought to assess whether best-worst scaling (BWS) can be used to capture attributes considered by older adults with AML when making initial treatment decisions and longitudinally, as well as assess changes in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and decisional regret over time.

Background: Obesity (body mass index [BMI] ≥30 kg/m ) is an important epidemiological risk factor for developing acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Therefore, the authors studied the association of obesity with clinical and genetic phenotype and its impact on outcome in adults with AML.
Methods: The authors analyzed BMI in 1088 adults who were receiving intensive remission induction and consolidation therapy in two prospective, randomized therapeutic clinical trials of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group-American College of Radiology Imaging Network: E1900 (ClinicalTrials.

Objective: The utility of intraoperative frozen section analysis (FSA) at the surgical margins (SMs) in patients with upper urinary tract cancer has not been established. We herein assessed the clinical significance of routine FSA of ureteral SMs during nephroureterectomy (NU) or segmental ureterectomy (SU).
Materials And Methods: A retrospective review of our Surgical Pathology database identified consecutive patients undergoing NU (n=246) or SU (n=42) for urothelial carcinoma from 2004 to 2018.

Lifestyle interventions targeting energy balance (ie, diet, exercise) are critical for optimizing the health and well-being of cancer survivors. Despite their benefits, access to these interventions is limited, especially in underserved populations, including older people, minority populations and those living in rural and remote areas. Telehealth has the potential to improve equity and increase access.

Introduction: Patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder tumor suffer from disease recurrence following transurethral surgery even with intravesical pharmacotherapy, while muscle-invasive disease is often deadly. It is therefore critical to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms responsible for not only bladder tumor progression but also its tumorigenesis. Indeed, various molecules and/or signaling pathways have been suggested to contribute to the pathogenesis of bladder cancer.

Monoclonal antibody induced infusion reactions (IRs) can be serious and even fatal. We used clinical data and blood samples from 37 treatment naïve patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL) initiating therapy for progressive disease with a single 50 mg dose of intravenous (IV) rituximab at 25 mg/h. Twenty-four (65 %) patients had IRs at a median of 78 min (range 35-128) and rituximab dose of 32 mg (range 15-50).

Importance: Older adults with advanced cancer who have high pretreatment symptom severity often experience adverse events during cancer treatments. Unsupervised machine learning may help stratify patients into different risk groups.
Objective: To evaluate whether clusters identified from baseline patient-reported symptom severity were associated with adverse outcomes.

Introduction: Splenic B-cell lymphomas are rare and understudied entities. Splenectomy is frequently required for specific pathological diagnosis in patients with splenic B-cell lymphomas other than classical hairy cell leukemia (cHCL), and can be effective and durable therapy. Our study investigated the diagnostic and therapeutic role of splenectomy for non-cHCL indolent splenic B-cell lymphomas.

Background: Older adults (age ≥65 years) receiving chemotherapy are at risk for hospitalization. Predictors of unplanned hospitalization among older adults receiving chemotherapy for cancer were recently published using data from a study conducted by the Cancer and Aging Research Group (CARG). Our study aimed to externally validate these predictors in an independent cohort including older adults with advanced cancer receiving chemotherapy.
