Patient navigation (PN) was created to address barriers to screening and workup for cancers. Since its inception it has resulted in improved mammography utilization, diagnostic resolution, and time to breast cancer treatment initiation in medically underserved populations. Because an abundance of evidence has established PN's positive impact, its use has expanded within the breast cancer care continuum, from screening, treatment, and ultimately survivorship.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence in younger adults has been steadily rising, warranting an in-depth investigation into the distinctions between early-onset CRC (EOCRC, < 50 years) and late-onset CRC (LOCRC, ≥ 50 years). Despite extensive study of clinical, pathological, and molecular traits, differentiating EOCRC from LOCRC and identifying potential biomarkers remain elusive. We analyzed plasma samples from healthy individuals, EOCRC, and LOCRC patients using liquid-chromatography mass spectrometry (LC/MS)-based metabolomics and lipidomics.

RNA therapeutics has advanced into the third milestone in pharmaceutical drug development, following chemical and protein therapeutics. RNA itself can serve as therapeutics, carriers, regulators, or substrates in drug development. Due to RNA's motile, dynamic, and deformable properties, RNA nanoparticles have demonstrated spontaneous targeting and accumulation in cancer vasculature and fast excretion through the kidney glomerulus to urine to prevent possible interactions with healthy organs.

Background: To understand the dynamics that limit use of risk-management options by women at high risk of breast cancer, there is a critical need for research that focuses on patient perspectives. Prior research has left important gaps: exclusion of high-risk women not in risk-related clinical care, exclusion of non-white populations, and lack of attention to the decision-making processes that underlie risk-management choices. Our objective was to create a more inclusive dataset to facilitate research to address disparities related to decision making for breast cancer risk management.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a rare malignancy of the intrahepatic and extrahepatic biliary ducts. CCA is primarily defined by its anatomic location: intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma versus extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. Hilar cholangiocarcinoma (HC) is a subtype of extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma that arises from the common hepatic bile duct and can extend to the right and/or left hepatic bile ducts.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses the importance of genetic and gene expression diversity in tumors, which allows cancer to adapt and resist treatments.
  • It highlights a lack of tools for connecting the genetic subclones of tumors with their gene expression profiles, leading to the development of a new method called scBayes.
  • scBayes is a Bayesian framework that integrates genomic and transcriptomic data, enabling better comparisons of gene expression across tumor subclones and offering insights into cancer behavior over time and across different sites.

Introduction: We sought to define the individual contributions of patient characteristics (PCs), hospital characteristics (HCs), case volume (CV), and social determinants of health (SDoH) on in-hospital mortality (IHM) after complex cancer surgery.

Methods: The California Department of Health Care Access and Information database identified patients who underwent esophagectomy (ES), pneumonectomy (PN), pancreatectomy (PD), or proctectomy (PR) for a malignant diagnosis between 2010 and 2020. Multi-level multivariable regression was performed to assess the proportion of variance explained by PCs, HCs, CV and SDoH on IHM.

Sequence motif discovery algorithms enhance the identification of novel deoxyribonucleic acid sequences with pivotal biological significance, especially transcription factor (TF)-binding motifs. The advent of assay for transposase-accessible chromatin using sequencing (ATAC-seq) has broadened the toolkit for motif characterization. Nonetheless, prevailing computational approaches have focused on delineating TF-binding footprints, with motif discovery receiving less attention.

Background: Low back pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide and is frequently attributed to intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration. Though the contributions of the adjacent cartilage endplates (CEP) to IVD degeneration are well documented, the phenotype and functions of the resident CEP cells are critically understudied. To better characterize CEP cell phenotype and possible mechanisms of CEP degeneration, bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing of non-degenerated and degenerated CEP cells were performed.

Article Synopsis
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to examine the effect of RAS mutation status on prognosis linked to surgical techniques (anatomic vs. nonanatomic resection) for colorectal liver metastases (CRLM).
  • The study analyzed data from 2018 patients and found that anatomic resections led to significant improvements in liver-specific and overall disease-free survival for patients with mutRAS tumors, while showing no such benefits for patients with wtRAS tumors.
  • The findings suggest that anatomic resections might be more beneficial for patients with mutRAS tumors and encourage a more tailored approach to surgery, rather than a one-size-fits-all strategy.
