Background: Research on the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) in 's Section-III has demonstrated acceptable interrater reliability, a largely consistent latent structure, substantial correlations with theoretically and clinically relevant measures, and evidence for incremental concurrent and predictive validity after controlling for 's Section II categorical personality disorders (PDs). However, the AMPD is not yet widely used clinically. One clinician concern may be caseness - that the new model will diagnose a different set of PD patients from that with which they are familiar.

The Learning Ratio (LR) is a novel learning score that has shown improved utility over other learning metrics in detecting Alzheimer's disease (AD) across multiple memory tasks. However, its utility on the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease Word List Memory Test (CERAD WLMT), a widely used list learning measure sensitive to decline in neurodegenerative disease, is unknown. The goal of the current study was to determine the utility of LR on the CERAD WLMT in differentiating between diagnostic (MiNCD vs MaNCD) and etiologic groups (VaD vs AD) in a veteran sample.

New functions and roles of the Na-H-exchanger NHE3.

Pflugers Arch

April 2024

Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology, Morsani College of Medicine, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL, 33612, USA.

The sodium/proton exchanger isoform 3 (NHE3) is expressed in the intestine and the kidney, where it contributes to hydrogen secretion and sodium (re)absorption. The roles of this transporter have been studied by the use of the respective knockout mice and by using pharmacological inhibitors. Whole-body NHE3 knockout mice suffer from a high mortality rate (with only ∼30% of mice surviving into adulthood), and based on the expression of NHE3 in both intestine and kidney, some conclusions that were originally derived were based on this rather complex phenotype.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating disorder inflicting high degrees of symptomatic and socioeconomic burdens. The development of PTSD results from a cascade of events with contributions from multiple processes and the underlying pathophysiology is complex, involving neurotransmitters, neurocircuitry, and neuroanatomical pathways. Presently, only two medications are US FDA-approved for the treatment of PTSD, both selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated cognitive dispersion, which measures variability in performance on neuropsychological tests among older adults, aiming to create normed scores for better clinical application.
  • Researchers analyzed data from over 4,200 cognitively normal participants aged 50 and above to develop methods for calculating standard metrics of intraindividual variability and assess their effectiveness in identifying cognitive impairment related to Lewy body disease.
  • The findings resulted in normative tables and an Excel calculator for easily deriving adjusted scores, demonstrating that cognitive dispersion measures are useful in differentiating between cognitively healthy individuals and those with impairments, providing valuable tools for clinical evaluation.

The development of the kidney involves essential cellular processes, such as cell proliferation and differentiation, which are led by interactions between multiple signaling pathways. Xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH) catalyzes the reaction producing uric acid in the purine catabolism, which plays a multifaceted role in cellular metabolism. Our previous study revealed that the genetic ablation of the Xdh gene in rats leads to smaller kidneys, kidney damage, decline of renal functions, and failure to thrive.

Herba Epimedii, commonly known as yin yang huo, inyokaku, and horny goat weed, is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine utilized for treating osteoporosis and enhancing libido. Studies conducted in vitro have demonstrated that Herba Epimedii interacts with the enzyme cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). This interaction poses a potential risk for drug-drug interactions, particularly with medications metabolized by CYP3A4, such as buprenorphine.

Repetitive mild traumatic brain injuries (r-mTBI) sustained in the military or contact sports have been associated with the accumulation of extracellular tau in the brain, which may contribute to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative tauopathies. The expression of the apolipoprotein E4 (apoE4) isoform has been associated with higher levels of tau in the brain, and worse clinical outcomes after r-mTBI, though the influence of apoE genotype on extracellular tau dynamics in the brain is poorly understood. We recently demonstrated that extracellular tau can be eliminated across blood-brain barrier (BBB), which is progressively impaired following r-mTBI.

Background: Powered ankle-foot prosthetic devices can generate net positive mechanical work during gait, which mimics the physiological ankle. However, gait deviations can persist in individuals with transfemoral limb loss because of habit or lack of rehabilitation. Prosthetic research efforts favor the design or evaluation of prosthetic componentry and rarely incorporate any type of rehabilitation, despite evidence suggesting that it is critical for minimizing gait imbalances.

Genetic risk and likelihood of prostate cancer detection on first biopsy by ancestry.

J Natl Cancer Inst

May 2024

VA Informatics and Computing Infrastructure, VA Salt Lake City Health Care System, Salt Lake City, UT, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study analyzed the effectiveness of a genetic risk score (PHS290) in predicting prostate cancer diagnoses during initial biopsies among 36,717 male veterans, including 10,297 of African ancestry.
  • - Higher genetic risk correlated with increased rates of positive biopsies, with low-risk men having a 34% detection rate compared to 58% for high-risk men (P < .001).
  • - Although higher genetic risk significantly increased detection rates for both African and European ancestry groups, it was notably stronger for European men (odds ratio of 3.89 vs. 2.18 for African ancestry), indicating a need for more equitable genetic risk assessments across different ancestry groups.
