Karl Ludwig Kahlbaum (1828-1899) was the first to conceptualize and describe the main clinical features of a novel psychiatric illness, which he termed catatonia in his groundbreaking monograph published 150 years ago. Although Kahlbaum postulated catatonia as a separate disease entity characterized by psychomotor symptoms and a cyclical course, a close examination of his 26 cases reveals that most of them presented with motor symptom complexes or syndromes associated with various psychiatric and medical conditions. In his classification system, Kraepelin categorized catatonic motor symptoms that occur in combination with psychotic symptoms and typically have a poor prognosis within his dementia praecox (schizophrenia) disease entity.

Catatonia: "Fluctuat nec mergitur".

World J Psychiatry

May 2023

Department of Psychiatry and Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Jahn Ferenc South Pest Hospital, Budapest 1204, Hungary.

Article Synopsis
  • * Improved treatment options, including pharmacological and psychosocial methods, likely reduced the severity and frequency of catatonia symptoms.
  • * Recent findings, particularly with the introduction of catatonia rating scales, indicate that catatonia is still present, affecting about 10% of acute psychotic patients, challenging the previous belief in its decline.

Background And Purpose:

Despite the decrease in transplant-related mortality, patients who receive hematopoietic stem-cell transplants often suffer from short-and long-term morbidities, poorer quality of life, and psychosocial functioning deficits. Several studies have compared the quality of life and affective symptoms of patients after undergoing autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem-cell transplants. Some studies have reported similar or greater quality of life impairments in allogeneic hematopoietic stem-cell recipients, but the findings have been inconsistent.

Treatment of schizophrenia with catatonic symptoms: A narrative review.

Schizophr Res

January 2024

Department of Psychiatry and Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Jahn Ferenc South Pest Hospital, Budapest, Hungary; Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Faculty of Medicine, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary.

Catatonia is a neuropsychiatric syndrome consisting of psychomotor abnormalities caused by a broad range of disorders affecting brain function. While the nosological status of catatonia is no longer restricted to a subtype of schizophrenia in standardized diagnostic systems, the character, course, and clinical significance of catatonia in people with schizophrenia remain unclear. Evidence suggests that catatonia could be a nonspecific state-related phenomenon, a fundamental core symptom dimension of schizophrenia, or a subcortical variant of schizophrenia.

Catatonia during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Schizophr Res

January 2024

Department of Psychiatry and Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Jahn Ferenc South Pest Hospital, Budapest, Hungary; Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Faculty of Medicine, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary. Electronic address:

While the psychopathology of mental disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period is a growing area of research, the prevalence and significance of catatonic symptoms has been relatively neglected. To address this gap in knowledge, a systematic review of articles on catatonia occurring during pregnancy and the postpartum period was conducted. PubMed, Excerpta Medica, (later EMBASE) databases were queried for articles published in English from their inception in 1966 and 1946, respectively to May 31.

Aggressive behavior in patients with psychiatric disorders is attracting increasing research interest. One reason for this is that psychiatric patients are generally considered more likely to be aggressive, which raises a related question of whether diagnoses of psychiatric disorders predict the prevalence of aggressive behavior. Predicting aggression in psychiatric wards is crucial, because aggressive behavior not only endangers the safety of both patients and staff, but it also extends the hospitalization times.

Psychosocial aspects of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

World J Transplant

July 2021

Department of Psychiatry and Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Jahn Ferenc South Pest Hospital, Budapest 1204, Hungary.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has become a conventional and potentially curative treatment for various hematological diseases. As more sophisticated procedures have been developed and mortality rates have decreased, attention has shifted to the psychosocial challenges associated with transplantation. The psychosocial difficulties accompanying transplantation are addressed in the context of both quality of life (QOL) and psychopathological research.

DSM-5 introduced a number of modifications to the catatonic syndrome, which is now closer to Kahlbaum's original concept. The aim of the present study was to assess residents' and qualified psychiatrists' knowledge, experience and views about the treatment of catatonia in acute psychiatric care in Budapest, Hungary. Authors approached all psychiatric units that provide acute psychiatric care (N = 11) in Budapest and invited all psychiatrists and residents, who consented, to participate in the survey, completing a 13 items questionnaire.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), which is among the oldest and most controversial treatments in the field of psychiatry, has its 80 birthday this year. In this brief historical overview, the discovery of the therapeutic effects of convulsive therapy by Laszló Meduna, and the circumstances that motivated Ugo Cerletti and Lucio Bini to use electricity as a means of seizure induction are described. Meduna's original theory about the antagonism between epilepsy and schizophrenia has been replaced by hypotheses on the mechanism of action of ECT.

Tc-trofolastat (Tc-MIP-1404), a small-molecule inhibitor of prostate-specific membrane antigen, shows high potential to detect prostate cancer (PCa) noninvasively using SPECT. We therefore wanted to assess the performance of Tc-trofolastat SPECT/CT in a phase 2 multicenter, multireader prospective study in patients with intermediate- and high-grade PCa, before radical prostatectomy and extended pelvic lymph node (LN) dissection, with histopathology as the gold standard. PCa patients ( = 105) with an increased risk of LN involvement (LNI) underwent pelvic Tc-trofolastat SPECT/CT before radical prostatectomy with extended pelvic LN dissection.

In bacteria, complex adaptive processes are involved during transition from the planktonic to the biofilm mode of growth, and mutator strains are more prone to producing biofilms. Enterobacteriaceae species were isolated from urinary tract infections (UTIs; 222 strains) and from bloodstream infections (BSIs; 213 strains). Relationship between the hypermutable phenotype and biofilm forming capacity was investigated in these clinical strains.

Prostate cancer screening.

Recent Results Cancer Res

May 2007

Department of Urology, Jahn Ferenc South-Pest Hospital, Budapest, Hungary.

Prostate cancer incurs a substantial incidence and mortality burden, similarly to breast cancer, and it ranks among the top ten specific causes of death in the United States. It is inherent as we maximize the detection of early prostate cancer that we increase the detection of both nonaggressive (slow growing) and aggressive (faster growing) prostate cancers. The evidence clearly supports the use of PSA screening in conjunction with DRE as a means of early detection of prostate cancer.

This study was one of the first to examine the in vivo levofloxacin adsorption to stent surfaces. The results demonstrated the ability of this antibiotic to adsorb to the conditioning film and to the surface of the inserted device, and showed that 1-2 weeks after the discontinuation of antibiotic administration some amount of the antibiotic still could be detected on them. The second aim of the investigation was to determine whether continuous or intermittent levofloxacin treatment is advantageous for the patients who have acute complicated urinary tract infection (UTI) caused by urinary obstruction.

The role of biofilm infection in urology.

World J Urol

February 2006

Department of Urology, Jahn Ferenc South-Pest Hospital, Köves utca 2-4, 1204 Budapest, Hungary.

In the process of endourological development a great variety of foreign bodies have been invented besides urinary catheters on which biofilm can be formed. Bacteria in the biofilm are less sensible to antibiotics. An additional problem of medical biomaterials in the urinary tract environment is the development of encrustation and consecutive obstruction.
