Ryan Alberts practices at Universal Primary Care in Olean, N.Y. AnnMarie Zimmermann is medical director of the Southern Tier Community Health Center Network in Olean, N.Y. Anthony Martinez is an associate professor of medicine in the Jacobs School of Medicine at the University at Buffalo (N.Y.) and medical director of hepatology at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, N.Y. The authors have disclosed no potential conflicts of interest, financial or otherwise.

The rising prevalence of opioid use disorder and injection drug use has resulted in an increasing incidence of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Although older adults historically have represented the bulk of HCV infections in the United States, demographics have shifted and most new infections are presenting in younger patients. As a result, screening guidelines for HCV have evolved, moving toward a near-universal screening paradigm.

Purpose: Atypical meningiomas have histologic and clinical features that fall between those for benign and malignant meningiomas. The incidence of atypical meningiomas has not been well studied with respect to changes in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification scheme over time.

Methods: The National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was queried to obtain data from 2004 to 2018 for patients with all meningiomas, including atypical.

Rapid and accurate simulation of cerebral aneurysm flow modifications by flow diverters (FDs) can help improving patient-specific intervention and predicting treatment outcome. However, when FD devices are explicitly represented in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, flow around the stent wires must be resolved, leading to high computational cost. Classic porous medium (PM) methods can reduce computational expense but cannot capture the inhomogeneous FD wire distribution once implanted on a cerebral artery and thus cannot accurately model the post-stenting aneurysmal flow.

Article Synopsis
  • Histoplasmosis is typically a mild respiratory infection seen in endemic regions, rarely causing severe illness in healthy individuals, but can lead to serious central nervous system issues in rare cases.
  • A 44-year-old man receiving treatment for ulcerative colitis developed an unusual intramedullary spinal cord lesion linked to disseminated histoplasmosis, with his diagnosis initially confused with other conditions.
  • After starting antifungal treatment, the patient showed significant improvement, highlighting the need to consider histoplasmosis in granulomatous diseases, even outside endemic areas, and noting that CNS symptoms may not always follow typical presentations.

Department of Neurosurgery, Jacobs School of Medicine at the University at Buffalo, Buffalo, New York, USA; Department of Neurosurgery, John R. Oishei Children's Hospital, Buffalo, New York, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Fetal trauma during pregnancy can have a significant impact on the developing brain. Fetal trauma can lead to several intracranial pathologies including hypoxic-ischemic injury, skull fractures, and intracranial hemorrhages. Blunt trauma to a fetus resulting in the need for neurosurgical intervention is a rare occurrence and seldom described in the literature.

Department of Neurosurgery, Jacobs School of Medicine at the University at Buffalo, Buffalo, New York, USA; Department of Radiology, Jacobs School of Medicine at the University at Buffalo, Buffalo, New York, USA; Department of Neurosurgery, Gates Vascular Institute at Kaleida Health, Buffalo, New York, USA; Canon Stroke and Vascular Research Center, University at Buffalo, Buffalo, New York, USA. Electronic address:

Introduction: Studies have begun investigating grit (continued fortitude in the face of hardship) and resilience (ability to recover from a setback) and their relationship to burnout (emotional exhaustion [EE] caused by prolonged stress or frustration) within medicine. We investigated the prevalence of burnout among neurosurgery residents and aimed to determine the relationship among burnout, grit, and resilience.

Methods: We surveyed U.

Purpose: This is a prospective study of children with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome receiving clobazam as adjunctive therapy. This pilot study aims to examine medication effectiveness as it relates to seizure reduction, as well as improvement in parent-reported behavior and quality of life (QOL).

Methods: Ten patients with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome aged 3-11 years were enrolled in this 6-week, 4 phase study.
