For decades, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has been conducting and supporting research to discover new ways to minimize disability and enhance the quality of life of people with disabilities. The nursing theory of Imogene King provided an effective framework for viewing the complex interactions that occurred when a psychotic client with newly diagnosed human immunodeficiency virus infection (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-related complex) was admitted to a general psychiatric unit. The interacting systems identified in King's theory assisted in the evaluation of the relationship that formed between the client and the nurses and provided a plan for action that led to the successful achievement of nursing care goals.

Captopril-associated acute interstitial nephritis.

A 57-year-old male with mild impairment of renal function secondary to diabetic glomerulosclerosis developed acute renal failure (creatinine 32.4 mg/dl) associated with a generalized desquamative skin rash and peripheral eosinophilia shortly after initiation of antihypertensive therapy with captopril. An acute interstitial nephritis was demonstrated on renal biopsy, and improvement was temporally related to initiation of therapy with prednisone.

The influence of caloric information on cafeteria food choices.

We evaluated the effect of posting caloric information on food purchases at a cafeteria. Purchases of more than 14,300 entrees, vegetables, and salads by 6,970 customers were unobtrusively monitored via the cash register inventory control system during 15 evening observations. A quasi-multiple-baseline design across food groups was used to test the additive effect of labeling the three lowest caloric choices for vegetables, salads, and entrees.
