Based on stress sensitization theory and stress proliferation theory, this study was designed to identify adverse childhood experience (ACE) classes and their relationships with perceived stress and self-care behaviors. Hypotheses were that (a) there would be diverse ACE classes among African American social work students; (b) the identified classes embedded in high/multiple ACEs would have greater levels of perceived stress than those in low ACEs; and (c) the identified classes embedded in high/multiple ACEs would have lower levels of self-care behaviors than those in low ACEs. Recruited from one of the South's historically Black colleges and universities, 186 African American social work students completed an online survey.

We report the controlled synthesis of iron oxide microcubes (IOMCs) through the self-assembly arrays of ferric oxide hydroxide nanorods (NRs). The formation of IOMCs involves a complex interplay of nucleation, self-assembly, and growth mechanisms influenced by time, thermal treatment, and surfactant dynamics. The self-assembly of vertically aligned NRs into IOMCs is controlled by dynamic magnetism properties and capping agents like cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), whose concentration and temperature modulation dictate growth kinetics and structural uniformity.

User Manual for Coping Strategies Inventory Short Form (CSI-SF)-The Jackson Heart Study.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

April 2024

Jackson Heart Study Graduate Training and Education Center, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health, Jackson State University, Jackson, MI 39170, USA.

Researchers have asserted that patients who generally rely on powerful external sources to control their disorders can benefit from examining their coping mechanisms, which can potentially lead to a better understanding of the initiation and progression of some chronic diseases. By trusting their own internal powers and virtues, it is possible for some people to discover and navigate available strategies to balance and enhance their psycho-spiritual well-being and possibly their treatment and recovery. This review serves as a user manual for investigators who choose to use the CSI-SF to conduct their research on coping behaviors.

Clean and renewable energy development is becoming frontier research for future energy resources, as renewable energy offers sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives to non-renewable sources such as fossil fuels. Among various renewable energy sources, tremendous progress has been made in converting solar energy to electric energy by developing efficient organic photovoltaics. Organic photovoltaic materials comprising conjugated polymers (CP) with narrow optical energy gaps are promising candidates for developing sustainable sources due to their potentially lower manufacturing costs.

Solid phase extraction (SPE) and liquid chromatographic (LC) separation of nucleobases and nucleosides are challenging due to the high hydrophilicity of these compounds. Herein we report a novel on-line SPE-LC-MS/MS method for their quantification after pre-column derivatization with chloroacetaldehyde (CAA). The method proposed is selective and sensitive with limits of detection at the nano-molar level.

Introduction: To evaluate the effect of injecting vasopressin during laparoscopic excision of ovarian endometriomas on ovarian reserve.

Evidence Acquisition: Four different databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science) were searched to identify relevant studies in March 2023. We selected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared vasopressin injection in the intervention group versus no injection of vasopressin in the control group among women undergoing laparoscopic cystectomy of ovarian endometriomas.

Article Synopsis
  • Metal-sulfide electrodes have theoretical energy density advantages but face practical limitations, prompting the exploration of a sulfur-rich MoS chalcogel for lithium-sulfide batteries (LiSBs).
  • The structure of the MoS chalcogel was analyzed using advanced techniques like Raman spectroscopy and X-ray absorption, revealing a unique 3D network bonded by S-S connections.
  • Li/MoS half-cells exhibited impressive initial capacity and maintained stable performance over 140 cycles, suggesting the MoS chalcogel's promise as an effective electrode material for energy storage systems.

Effect of shape anisotropy in nanocrystals of semiconductors with small spin-orbit splitting.

J Chem Phys

March 2024

Department of Physics, Jackson State University, Jackson, Mississippi 39217, USA and Ioffe Institute, 194021 St. Petersburg, Russia.

We derive an effective spin-Hamiltonian accounting for the shape anisotropy of the zinc blende semiconductor nanocrystals within the k · p formalism explicitly taking into account the spin-orbit split-off valence band. It is shown that, for small InP nanocrystals, neglect of the spin-orbit split-off band can lead to significant underestimation of one of the two parameters determining the exciton fine-structure splittings. This parameter is only important for nanocrystals with shape anisotropy.

Amorphous K-Co-Mo-S Chalcogel: A Synergy of Surface Sorption and Ion-Exchange.

Small

August 2024

Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Atmospheric Sciences, Jackson State University, Jackson, MS, 39217, USA.

Chalcogel represents a unique class of meso- to macroporous nanomaterials that offer applications in energy and environmental pursuits. Here, the synthesis of an ion-exchangeable amorphous chalcogel using a nominal composition of KCoMoS (KCMS) at room temperature is reported. Synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function (PDF), X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) reveal a plausible local structure of KCMS gel consisting of Mo and Mo clusters in the vicinity of di/polysulfides which are covalently linked by Co ions.

Preparation and optimization of an eggshell membrane-based biomaterial for GTR applications.

Dent Mater

April 2024

Department of Biomedical Materials Science, School of Dentistry, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, MS 39216, USA. Electronic address:

Objectives: Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR) is a popular clinical procedure for periodontal tissue regeneration. However, its key component, the barrier membrane, is largely collagen-based and is still quite expensive, posing a financial burden to the patients as well as healthcare systems and negatively impacting the patient's decision-making. Thus, our aim is to prepare a novel biomimetic GTR membrane utilizing a natural biomaterial, soluble eggshell membrane protein (SEP), which is economical as it comes from an abundant industrial waste from food and poultry industries, unlike collagen.

Dissociation Time, Quantum Yield, and Dynamic Reaction Pathways in the Thermolysis of -3,4-Dimethyl-1,2-dioxetane.

J Phys Chem Lett

February 2024

Department of Chemistry and Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California 90089, United States.

The thermolysis of -3,4-dimethyl-1,2-dioxetane is studied by trajectory surface hopping. The significant difference between long and short dissociation times is rationalized by frustrated dissociations and the time spent in triplet states. If the C-C bond breaks through an excited state channel, then the trajectory passes over a ridge of the potential energy surface of that state.

Melanoma frequently harbors genetic alterations in key molecules leading to the aberrant activation of PI3K and its downstream pathways. Although the role of PI3K/AKT/mTOR in melanoma progression and drug resistance is well documented, targeting the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway showed less efficiency in clinical trials than might have been expected, since the suppression of the PI3K/mTOR signaling pathway-induced feedback loops is mostly associated with the activation of compensatory pathways such as MAPK/MEK/ERK. Consequently, the development of intrinsic and acquired resistance can occur.
