Admission to a Verified Pediatric Trauma Center is Associated With Improved Outcomes in Severely Injured Children.

J Pediatr Surg

March 2024

DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, FL, USA; Ryder Trauma Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, FL, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Previous studies have shown improved survival for severely injured adult patients treated at American College of Surgeons verified level I/II trauma centers compared to level III and undesignated centers. However, this relationship has not been well established in pediatric trauma centers (PTCs). We hypothesize that severely injured children will have lower mortality at verified level I/II PTCs compared to centers without PTC verification.

Background: Autologous bone grafts are the gold standard for spinal fusion; however, harvesting autologous bone can result in donor site infection, hematomas, increased operative time, and prolonged pain. Cellular bone allografts (CBAs) are a viable alternative that avoids the need for bone harvesting and may increase fusion success alone or when used as an adjunct material. The present study examined the efficacy and safety of CBA when used as an adjunct graft material to lumbar arthrodesis.

Background: Right versus left kidney donor nephrectomy remains a controversial topic in renal transplantation given the increased incidence of right kidney vascular anomalies and associated venous thrombosis. We present the case of a 3-year-old pediatric recipient with urethral atresia and end-stage kidney disease who received a robotically procured living donor right pelvic kidney with two short same-size renal veins and a short ureter.

Methods: We utilized a completely deceased iliac vein system (common iliac vein with both external and internal veins) to extend the two renal veins.

Introduction: Accurate identification of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is critical to develop replicable epidemiological studies and rigorous predictions models. Traditionally, VTE studies have relied on international classification of diseases (ICD) codes which are inaccurate - leading to misclassification bias. Here, we developed ClotCatcher, a novel deep learning model that uses natural language processing to detect VTE from radiology reports.

Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy targeting CD19 (CAR-19) promotes impressive durable remissions for relapsed or refractory (rel/ref) large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL) patients with historically poor prognoses. Despite this, over half of patients still fail to respond or eventually progress. Studies to reveal mechanisms of resistance have examined host clinical parameters, CAR-19 product composition, and tumor microenvironment (TME) alterations, while a relative paucity of studies has analyzed contributions by genomic alterations in tumor cells.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the often-ignored non-cancerous kidney tissue removed during nephrectomies, focusing on how global glomerulosclerosis (GS), interstitial fibrosis (IF), and arteriosclerosis (AS) relate to kidney function, measured by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and protein levels in urine.
  • A cross-sectional analysis of 781 patients revealed that higher levels of GS, IF, and AS correspond to lower eGFR and increased proteinuria, with specific demographic factors like obesity and hypertension affecting these relationships.
  • The findings indicate that not only are more severe degrees of GS, IF, and AS linked to worse kidney function and proteinuria, but also that conditions like obesity, hypertension
