Background: FibroTest (FT) is the most frequently used serum fibrosis marker and consists of an algorithm of five fibrosis markers (alfa2-macroglobulin, apolipoproteinA1, haptoglobin, GGT, bilirubin). The Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) test consists of an algorithm of three fibrosis markers (hyaluronic acid, amino-terminal propeptide-of-type-III-collagen, tissue-inhibitor of matrix-metaloproteinase-1). While a systematic review has shown comparable results for both individual markers, there has been no direct comparison of both markers.

Abrogation of functional p53 is responsible for malignant cell transformation and the maintenance of malignant state of human papillomavirus-infected cancer cells. Thus, restoration of p53 has been regarded as an important strategy for molecular intervention combating papillomavirus-associated malignancies. We show here that depleting cyclin B1 stabilizes and reactivates p53 in papillomavirus-infected cervical cancer cell lines HeLa and CaSki.

Summary Background: Recently, there has been an increasing number of reports regarding adverse skin reactions to subcutaneous heparin administration. Case series have implied that heparin-induced skin lesions are predominantly associated with life-threatening heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) in at least 22% of patients. Skin lesions, therefore, have been included in clinical scores for HIT.

About 30 % of patients with severe hemophilia A develop neutralizing antibodies (inhibitors) to coagulation factor VIII (FVIII) upon treatment with exogenous factor preparations. Two peptides, C6 (NPVENMMDRDSQ) and H10 (QSPWQTWFTRAL), that mimic putative inhibitor epitopes (mimotopes), were previously selected by phage display screening of plasma samples from patients with inhibitors. Synthetic peptide mimotopes inhibited IgG binding to FVIII (IC(50): 30-50 microM).

Background: Wnt signaling controls the balance between stem cell proliferation and differentiation and body patterning throughout development. Previous data demonstrated that non-canonical Wnts (Wnt5a, Wnt11) increased cardiac gene expression of circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) and bone marrow-derived stem cells cultured in vitro. Since previous studies suggested a contribution of the protein kinase C (PKC) family to the Wnt5a-induced signalling, we investigated which PKC isoforms are activated by non-canonical Wnt5a in human EPC.

Purpose: Important comorbid conditions in elderly patients referred for aortic valve replacement require alternative treatment options with possible reduction of the extracorporeal circuit time and reliable hemodynamic features. We report on clinical experiences with the sutureless, nitinol-stented 3f Enable (ATS Medical, Minneapolis, MN) aortic valve prosthesis in 32 patients.
Description: The procedure was performed using cardiopulmonary bypass with cardioplegic arrest.
Current guidelines recommend a full 24-week regimen for all patients undergoing treatment for genotype 2 or 3 hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Recent data from two large randomized studies, one with pegylated interferon-alpha2a plus ribavirin (RBV) and one with pegylated interferon-alpha2b plus RBV assessed treatment duration and on-treatment predictors, such as rapid virological response (RVR; HCV RNA <50 IU/ml at week 4) or sustained virological response rates. Overall, these studies have shown that abbreviated regimens are generally less effective than standard 24-week regimens in genotype 2 or 3 patients because of a higher rate of relapse.
