Primary neurological manifestations of HIV in children.

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) causes various diseases in different age groups. Neurological manifestations of HIV are common and add to morbidity and mortality. It was previously thought that the central nervous system (CNS) was involved only in the advanced stages of the disease.

Management Strategies of Cranial Encephaloceles: A Neurosurgical Challenge.

Background: Encephalocele is defined as herniation of cranial contents beyond the normal confines of the skull through a defect in the calvarium either along the midline or at the base of skull. These anomalies should be repaired in the first few months of life to prevent neurological deficits and facial disfigurement. The aim of the surgery is water tight dural closure at the level of internal defect, closure of skull defect, and reconstruction of external bony deformity.

Pediatric Isolated Cortical (Ectopic) Anaplastic Ependymoma.

Ependymomas are tumors derived from ependymal cells lining the ventricles or from the central canal of the spinal cord. It usually arises in the ventricles with extra ventricular extension. Less than 15 cases of purely cortical ependymomas are reported.

Myasthenia gravis.

Myasthenia gravis is the prototype neuromuscular disease with immunological pathogenesis. The recognition and interpretation of the symptoms should be stressed as the diagnosis is initially achieved on clinical ground. Tests in the areas of immunology, electrophysiology and imaging further help the diagnosis, management and prognosis of the condition.

Evaluation of the efficacy, safety and tolerability of valdecoxib gel (1%) in adult patients with painful inflammatory joint disease.

Valdecoxib, a COX-2 inhibitor, has recently been introduced as a gel formulation. The present study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy, safety and tolerability of valdecoxib gel in adult patients with painful inflammatory joint conditions. The present study was a 10-day prospective, open, multicentric (6 centres) trial.

Sarcoglycanopathies: a report of 25 cases.

Twenty five patients with sarcoglycanopathies were studied prospectively. 21 of them had mild phenotype. Muscle involvement was more pronounced in adductor and flexor groups of muscles of the limbs, hip adductor muscles being the weakest.

A clinico-pathological study of 70 cases of pemphigus.

A clinicopalhological study of 70 cases of pemphigus observed over a span of four and a half years from January 1992 to June 1996 at the Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals and Grant Medical College, Mumbai is reported.
