Background: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is often concomitant with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), which can cause adverse cardiovascular events. Although an appropriate approach to SDB prevents cardiac remodelling, detection of concomitant SDB in patients with HCM remains suboptimal. Thus, we aimed to develop a machine learning-based discriminant model for SDB in HCM.

Purpose: The long-term prognosis of stapled and hand-sewn ileal pouch-anal anastomoses in familial adenomatous polyposis patients in Japan remains unknown. This study aimed to compare the overall survival in familial adenomatous polyposis patients who underwent stapled or hand-sewn ileal pouch-anal anastomosis.
Methods: This multicenter retrospective study was conducted at 12 institutions in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.

Background: Bone metastases are frequently observed in advanced cancer, and bone modifying agents are used to prevent or treat skeletal-related events. Zoledronic acid is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment (Ccr < 30 mL/min), but it is not completely known whether denosumab can be used in them. We aimed to determine the association between renal function and hypocalcemia development during denosumab treatment.

Background: Washing with water is not inferior to washing with soaps and detergents in children with atopic dermatitis (AD) in remission during the fall-winter seasons. We investigated whether this finding varies during summer based on the type of cleanser (soaps and detergents).
Methods: This evaluator-blinded, pragmatic, randomized, and non-inferiority study enrolled patients with AD whose eczema was controlled following regular steroid ointment application 2 days/week.

Background: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors reduce the urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) in patients with elevated levels of albuminuria in the presence or absence of heart failure (HF) or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). However, these effects have not yet been reported in the presence of both HF and T2D. This lack of evidence prompted us to conduct a clinical trial on the effects of dapagliflozin on UACR in patients with HF and T2D.

Background: Patient motivation is an important determinant of rehabilitation outcomes. Differences in patients' and clinicians' perceptions of motivational factors can potentially hinder patient-centered care. Therefore, we aimed to compare patients' and clinicians' perceptions of the most important factors in motivating patients for rehabilitation.

Background/aim: Maxillary sinus cancer is a relatively rare disease, and treatment is still evolving. We compared the efficacy of superselective intra-arterial infusion of high-dose cisplatin (CDDP) with concomitant radiotherapy (RADPLAT) using three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) or intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and analyzed the relationship between the total radiation dose and the treatment outcome in localized maxillary sinus cancer.
Patients And Methods: We reviewed the cases of 58 patients with localized maxillary sinus cancer treated with RADPLAT at our institution from March 2004 to November 2020.

Deep learning technology has been used in the medical field to produce devices for clinical practice. Deep learning methods in cytology offer the potential to enhance cancer screening while also providing quantitative, objective, and highly reproducible testing. However, constructing high-accuracy deep learning models necessitates a significant amount of manually labeled data, which takes time.

What Is Known And Objective: In Japan, ledipasvir/sofosbuvir, elbasvir/grazoprevir and glecaprevir/pibrentasvir are recommended as first-line treatments for patients with untreated hepatitis C virus genotype 1. Although they have demonstrated a high efficacy in clinical trials, there are no direct comparative studies. Clarification of their effectiveness and safety in real-world clinical practice is required.

Objective: Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) in Parkinson's disease is effective; however, its mechanism is unclear. To investigate the degree of neuronal terminal survival after STN-DBS, the authors examined the striatal dopamine transporter levels before and after treatment in association with clinical improvement using PET with [11C]2β-carbomethoxy-3β-(4-fluorophenyl)tropane ([11C]CFT).
Methods: Ten patients with Parkinson's disease who had undergone bilateral STN-DBS were scanned twice with [11C]CFT PET just before and 1 year after surgery.

Background: Although nasogastric tube (NGT) decompression is widely used in nonoperative management for adhesive small bowel obstruction (SBO), robust evidence is lacking to support this routine practice.
Methods: Patients who received nonoperative management with a diagnosis of adhesive SBO were retrospectively reviewed. Those who received NGT or long-tube decompression at admission were categorized into the NGT group, while those who initially had no NGT placement were categorized into the non-NGT group.
The purpose of this single-masked randomized clinical trial was to examine whether nonleisure-time physical activity guidance (NLTPAG) improves physical activity levels in patients after minor ischemic stroke. Patients who had been hospitalized for minor ischemic stroke in an acute care hospital (National Health Institute Stroke Scale ≤ 5) were randomized to either an NLTPAG group (n = 17) or a leisure-time physical activity guidance group (n = 16). NLTPAG focused on reducing sedentary behavior and increasing the frequency of walking for shopping and household activities to improve physical activity levels in daily life.

Introduction: Programmed cell death protein 1 immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been reported to improve the survival of patients with NSCLC. On the expansion of clinical administration for a variety of cancers, immune-related adverse events have been typically recognized to be associated with ICIs, therefore, necessitating the monitoring and management of these patients. Among immune-related adverse events, immune-related interstitial lung disease (ir-ILD) is a serious complication that interrupts treatment and can occasionally be fatal.

Background: Nivolumab, a programmed death 1 (PD-1) immune checkpoint inhibitor, has been shown to improve survival in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The possible involvement of PD-1 axis in the pathogenesis of inflammatory lung disease, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has also been reported. However, effects of PD-1 blockade on the respiratory system remain unknown.

The objectives of this study were to introduce a newly developed approach for holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) called the "complete en-bloc technique," and to compare the clinical outcomes of this approach with those of previously performed procedures. This study retrospectively assessed the perioperative findings from 548 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) undergoing HoLEP who were divided into the following groups according to the consecutive changes in surgical techniques: group A ( = 236), the three-lobe technique; group B ( = 137), the conventional en-bloc technique; and group C ( = 175), the complete en-bloc technique with direct bladder neck incision. There were no significant differences in major clinical characteristics or urinary symptoms among groups A, B, and C.

The vital role of folic acid is to reduce the risk of having a neonate afflicted with neural tube defects. The prevalence of neural tube defects (myelomeningocele and anencephaly) has been reported in an incomplete form over the last 40 years in Japan. We aimed to evaluate the total number of neural tube defects including those delivered or terminated, to clarify the proportion of those terminated, and to internationally compare their prevalence.

Background: In the eighth edition of the AJCC cancer staging classification, the T system for distal cholangiocarcinoma (DCC) has been revised from a layer-based to a depth-based approach. The aim of this study was to propose an optimal T classification using a measured depth in resectable DCC.
Methods: Patients who underwent pancreatoduodenectomy for DCC at 32 hospitals between 2001 and 2010 were included.
