Intraoperative condyle positioning by sonographic monitoring in orthognathic surgery verified by MRI.

J Craniomaxillofac Surg

January 2015

Cranio-Maxillofacial and Plastic Facial Surgery, (Head: Sader Robert, M.D., D.M.D., Ph.D., FEBOMFS), J. W. Goethe-University of Frankfurt Medical Center, Frankfurt, Germany.

Objective: Repositioning of the jaw in orthognathic surgery must produce precise and stable long-term results; an effective and practical method of intraoperative condyle positioning is required to achieve this. Most traditional methods, such as manual positioning or positioning plates do not permit intraoperative monitoring of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) position. This study evaluates the results of intraoperative, sonographically-monitored joint positioning, comparing preoperative and postoperative MRI scans.

Low to high oblique ramus piezoosteotomy: a pilot study.

J Craniomaxillofac Surg

September 2014

Cranio-Maxillofacial and Plastic Facial Surgery (Head: Robert Sader, MD, DMD, PhD, FEBOMFS), J. W. Goethe-University of Frankfurt Medical Centre, Frankfurt, Germany.

Two major drawbacks of classical bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) are occasional inferior alveolar nerve damage and bad splits. In order to avoid these two well-known disadvantages and benefit from ultrasonic bone cutting, a low-to-high oblique piezoosteotomy (LHO) was developed from Schlössmann's 1922 high oblique osteotomy, clinically evaluated with a standard and a novel osteosynthesis system. Eighty-five patients were retrospectively evaluated, 23 with an LHO osteotomy with standard osteosynthesis, 33 LHO with a dedicated plate osteosynthesis and compared to 29 patients with BSSO and standard osteosyntheses.

Basic skills in oral/CMF surgery should be taught effectively to dental students as surgical skills training is traditionally under-represented in the dental curriculum compared to its later need in daily clinical practice. Rigid curricular time frames and prospectively condensed professional education foster new effective teaching and examination formats. Transmitting and assessing clinical competence objectively (independent of subjective bias), reliably (repeatable, inter-rater consistency) and valid (representative, structured task selection) was intended and evaluated in oral/CMF surgery skills acquisition starting in summer 2009.

Orofacial rehabilitation in maxillary aplasia but the premaxilla requires, beyond addressing the oronasal communication, facial functional-aesthetic and dental prosthetic reconstruction. The report of a now 42-year-old patient, born with maxillary aplasia, presenting for surgical rehabilitation in 2002 (at 33 years old), further elaborates this complex challenge.A staged approach that included velopharyngoplasty was performed on the patient in 2002; alternatively to a preformed fibula, 2 zygomatic fixtures were later inserted bilaterally to the malar bone, and premaxillary teeth were retained.

Progesterone--promoter or inhibitor of breast cancer.

Climacteric

August 2013

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, J. W. Goethe University of Frankfurt, Germany.

Based on the results of a French cohort of postmenopausal women, it has been claimed that micronized progesterone does not enhance breast cancer risk. The impact of reproductive factors on breast cancer risk and a high prevalence of occult breast carcinomas at the time of menopause suggest an involvement of endogenous progesterone in the development of breast cancer. High mammographic density in the luteal phase and during treatment with estrogen/progestogen combinations reflect a change in the composition of mammary stroma and an increased water accumulation in the extracellular matrix which is caused by hygroscopic hyaluronan-proteoglycan aggregates.

Adaptation to ecologically heterogeneous environments can drive speciation. But what mechanisms maintain reproductive isolation among locally adapted populations? Using poeciliid fishes in a system with naturally occurring toxic hydrogen sulfide, we show that (a) fish from non-sulfidic sites (Poecilia mexicana) show high mortality (95 %) after 24 h when exposed to the toxicant, while locally adapted fish from sulfidic sites (Poecilia sulphuraria) experience low mortality (13 %) when transferred to non-sulfidic water. (b) Mate choice tests revealed that P.

A role for the spine apparatus in LTP and spatial learning.

Behav Brain Res

September 2008

Institute of Clinical Neuroanatomy, J.W. Goethe-University of Frankfurt, Theodor-Stern-Kai 7, Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

Long-term potentiation (LTP) of synaptic strength is a long-lasting form of synaptic plasticity that has been linked to information storage. Although the molecular and cellular events underlying LTP are not yet fully understood, it is generally accepted that changes in dendritic spine calcium levels as well as local protein synthesis play a central role. These two processes may be influenced by the presence of a spine apparatus, a distinct neuronal organelle found in a subpopulation of telencephalic spines.

Influence of rapid tryptophan depletion on laboratory-provoked aggression in children with ADHD.

Neuropsychobiology

April 2008

Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, J.W. Goethe University of Frankfurt am Main, Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

Background: The present study investigated the effects of rapid tryptophan depletion (RTD), and the ensuing reduction of central nervous system levels of serotonin (5-HT), upon reactive aggression in patients with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Furthermore, it was asked whether the relation between 5-HT function and behavioural aggression in patients is influenced by their age, the intensity of their attention problems or their comorbid symptoms.

Methods: The study employed a double-blind, within-subject crossover design.
