Evaluation of topical formulations of aqueous extract of Centella asiatica on open wounds in rats.

Formulations (ointment, cream and gel) of aqueous extract of C. asiatica, when applied topically, thrice daily for 24 days on the open wounds in rats increased cellular proliferation and collagen synthesis at the wound site, as evidenced by increase in collagen content and tensile strength. The treated wounds epithelialised faster and the rate of wound contraction was higher as compared to control wounds.

Bacopa Monnieri (L) penn. Belongs to the family scrophulariaceae is commonly used in Ayurvedic system of medicine to treat various disease. The present stud examines the anti-tumous effect of ethanolic extract of whole plant bacopa monnieri (L) (EEMB) by in vitro short term chemosensitivity and in vivo tumous model test systems.

Colorimetric determination of reserpine in polyherbal formulations.

A simple spectrophotometric method is reported her for the estimation of reserpine in polyherbal formulations. Estimation is based on the reaction with3-methylbenzolinone-2hydrazone (MBTH) reagent in presence of cerric ammonium sulphate to yield a violet coloured chromogen, which exhibits and absorption maxima at 580 nm. The chromogen is stable for 10 minutes.

Anticandidal activity of Santolina chamaecyparissus volatile oil.

A search for naturally occurring drugs with antifungal activity lead to Santolina oil, a volatile oil distillate of Santolina chamaecyparissus. The studies revealed that Santolina oil was effective in controlling experimental candidiasis in vitro and in vivo. It had a synergistic effect on clotrimazole in controlling Candida albicans in vitro.

Formulation and evaluation of polyherbal hair care powders.

The formulation of polyherbal hair care powders was attempted in our laboratories. There formulation (A-C) were found to be ideal and evaluation of these formulations is reported here.

Santolina volatile oil, a potential antifeedant for the control of the brown plant hopper, milaparvatha lugens.

The essential oil of santolina chamaecyparissus reduced the survival of Nilaparvatha lugens after 72 hours. The oil is found to be a good pesticide.

An in vitro study on the antimicrobial effect of select heterocyclic nitrogen compounds.

In vitro antimicrobial activity of seventeen heterocyclic nitrogen compounds {2-substituted pyrido [1,2-a] pyrimidin -4-oxo-1 [4]-3-Carbonitriles and ethyl 5-amino-3-(substituted) - pyrazole-3-Carboxylates} was tested against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and candida albicans strains, Antimicrobial activity was measured using standard two -fold serial dilution method and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values are determined, The MIC of pyrazoles and pyrido[1,2 -a] pyrimidines are found to be 25 μg/ml to 50 μg/ml against E. Coli and 50 μg/ml against B.subtilis respectively.

Anti-pyretic activity of some plants in female albino rats: a preliminary report.

Ethanolic extracts of Ailanthus exceisa (AE). Toddalia asiatica (TA) and Araucaria bidwilli (AB) were screened by the anti-pyretic activity in yeast induced hyperthermic test model in the laboratory. Dose of AE (100), TA (60) and AB (30) mg.

A simple method for determination of caffeine content in tea samples.

The present communication describes a simple and modified colorimetric procedure for the estimation of caffeine content in both commercial and locally available tea samples. Comparative data of caffeine content in different brands of tea samples are shown here. The present method is no doubt an improvised procedure for estimating directly caffeine content from the tea extracts.

Evaluation of certain siddha drugs in the treatment of candidiasis.

Search for naturally occurring compounds with antifungal activity has become quite intense due to the side effects of synthetic fungicides and the development of pathogens against such fungicides. Hence screening of various Siddha drugs for their antifungal activity against various strains of Candida albicans was considered worthwhile. Seven such Siddha drugs were screened for their antifungal activity against fourteen strains of Candida albicans.

Pharmacological studies of araucaria bidwilli hook.

Leaf and oleoresin fractions of both alcoholic and petroleum ether extracts of Araucaria bidwillii exhibited significant prolongation of pentobarbitones sleeping time at a dose of 300 and 100 mg/kg body weight respectively in mice. This effect is more pronounced for oleoresin than the leaf extracts. Further, the two extracts seem to possess analgesic effect comparable to aspirin by writing method.

Antifertility activity of Ailanthus excelsa Linn. in female albino rats.

Alcoholic extract of leaf and stem bark of A. excelsa at a dose of 250 mg equivalent of plant material/kg body weight, exhibited remarkably high anti-implantation and early abortifacient activities. The results are in agreement with the traditional use of this plant as a abortifacient by the Irula women of the Nilgiri district.
