Microbiome-based therapies for Parkinson's disease.

Front Nutr

November 2024

Department of Biochemistry, J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India.

The human gut microbiome dysbiosis plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). The bidirectional relationship between the enteric nervous system (ENS) and central nervous system (CNS) under the mediation of the gut-brain axis control the gastrointestinal functioning. This review article discusses key mechanisms by which modifications in the composition and function of the gut microbiota (GM) influence PD progression and motor control loss.

  • Soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) make up less than 1% of all malignant tumors in humans, and treatment for metastatic STSs focuses on palliative care due to poor prognosis.
  • A study evaluated the effectiveness of low-dose radiotherapy combined with metronomic therapy in 16 heavily treated patients with metastatic STSs, aiming to assess their response and quality of life.
  • Results showed that 43.75% of patients achieved a partial response, and all reported improved quality of life compared to their previous treatment, demonstrating potential benefits of this combined approach in managing STSs.

Background: The thyroid gland is one of the largest endocrine glands in the body, secreting thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Mild hypothyroidism can have negative consequences for a variety of tissues, even though clinically the patients are euthyroid. Many research studies were conducted to evaluate the serum creatinine levels of people with hypothyroidism; however, relatively little research was conducted to evaluate serum urea and serum creatinine levels in subclinical hypothyroidism.

Objectives: Antibiotic use is increasing in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC); however, few studies have examined the rates of use in a population. The use of antibiotics for liveborn infants in LMIC was examined.

Design: The study, a planned prospective, observational secondary analysis of the A-PLUS randomised controlled trial of azithromycin, was conducted in Global Network sites in seven countries: Bangladesh, Pakistan, India (two sites), Kenya, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Guatemala.

Mucormycosis is caused by saprophytic fungi belonging to the species mucorales. The disease commonly affects patients with immunocompromised states such as uncontrolled diabetes, blood disorders and organ transplantation recepients. The usual mode of management is by using antifungals such as amphotericin B and surgery in the form of debridement of the necrotic tissue.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on comparing the effectiveness of Ultrasound (US)-guided and Fluoroscopy-guided hydrodilatation treatments for adhesive capsulitis, highlighting that the incidence is higher in diabetic patients.
  • - Results showed that the US-guided group had significantly better outcomes in pain reduction, range of motion (ROM), and improvements in shoulder scores within the first few weeks after treatment compared to the fluoroscopy group.
  • - Long-term follow-up indicated that 70.3% of patients in the US-guided group maintained normal or near-normal ROM, suggesting that US-guided hydrodilatation may be the more effective method for treating this condition.

Background: The surgical treatment of non-union of long bones are challenging especially when bones are osteoporotic or there is a large bone gap due to repeated surgeries and implant failures. Plate with intramedullary fibula provides a stable construct as fibula acts as a second implant with better anchorage and high pull-out strength. The aim of our study is to present our experience of treating complex non-union of long bones using compression plating (LCP/DCP) in combination with autologous non-vascularized fibular graft (ANVFG).

Neurofibromas, in association with NF-1, can undergo a malignant transformation, giving rise to Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours (MPNSTs), a relatively rare entity. Clinically, it presents with non-specific symptoms like pain and numbness, distinguishing it from other nerve lesions difficult. There is a lack of data on the occurrence of MPNST in NF-1 in children and adults, and distant metastasis to the brain and bones is reported only in a few cases.

Article Synopsis
  • SARS-CoV-2 is a virus from the Beta coronavirus genus, primarily responsible for causing COVID-19, and it is part of a group of viruses that contribute to respiratory infections in humans.
  • Alongside four common coronaviruses, it stands out as one of three highly pathogenic coronaviruses, evolving in response to factors like herd immunity and vaccination efforts.
  • Multiple variants of concern (VOCs) have emerged, such as Alpha and Delta, which carry mutations that can affect how transmissible the virus is, its ability to evade vaccines, and the accuracy of diagnostic tests.

Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common type of cancer and the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths. Thymidylate synthase (TS) is a crucial component of DNA biosynthesis and has drawn interest as an essential target for cancer treatment. In the current work, we have designed and synthesized twenty-eight new diaryl-based pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine/alkyl-substituted pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine derivatives and evaluated their anticancer activity against the HCT 116, MCF-7, Hep G2, and PC-3 cell lines cell lines.
