Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS) is a soft ionisation technique based on gas phase ion-molecule reaction kinetics for the quantification of trace amounts of volatile organic compound vapours. One of its previous limitations is difficulty in resolving isomers, although this can now be overcome using different reactivities of several available reagent cations and anions (HO, NO, O˙, O˙, OH, O˙, NO, NO). Thus, the ion-molecule reactions of these eight ions with all isomers of the aromatic compounds cymene, cresol and ethylphenol were studied to explore the possibility of their immediate identification and quantification without chromatographic separation.

Details of electron-induced chemistry of methyl methacrylate (MMA) upon complexation are revealed by combining gas-phase 2D electron energy loss spectroscopy with electron attachment spectroscopy of isolated MMA and its clusters. We show that even though isolated MMA does not form stable parent anions, it efficiently thermalizes the incident electrons via intramolecular vibrational redistribution, leading to autodetachment of slow electrons. This autodetachment channel is reduced in clusters due to intermolecular energy transfer and stabilization of parent molecular anions.

DNA origami nanoframes with two parallel DNA sequences are used to evaluate the effect of nucleoside substituents on radiation-induced DNA damage. Double strand breaks (DSB) of DNA are counted using atomic force microscopy (AFM), and total number of lesions is evaluated using real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Enhanced AT or GC content does not increase the number of DNA strand breaks.

A sulphonamidic moiety was utilized as an electron-withdrawing group for enhancement of anion complexation features of urea-based receptors. A series of receptors varying in acidity of sulphonamidic and urea NH groups was synthesized and thoroughly tested. The individual complexation properties reflect deprotonation/complexation equilibrium in a given molecule as a function of the substitution.

Background: Intermittent hemodialysis (IHD) is the modality of choice in the extracorporeal treatment (ECTR) of acute methanol poisoning. However, the comparative clinical effectiveness of intermittent versus continuous modalities (CRRT) is unknown. During an outbreak of mass methanol poisoning, we therefore studied the effect of IHD versus CRRT on mortality and the prevalence of visual/central nervous system (CNS) sequelae in survivors.
