Interest in the observation and characterization of organic isomers in astronomical environments has grown rapidly with an increase in the sensitivity of detection techniques. Accurate modeling and interpretation of these environments require experimental isomer-specific reactivity and spectroscopic measurements. Given the abundance of formaldehyde (HCO) in various astrophysical objects, the properties and reactivities of its cation isomers HCO and HCOH are of significant interest.

Additives in vaping products, such as flavors, preservatives, or thickening agents, are commonly used to enhance user experience. Among these, Vitamin E acetate (VEA) was initially thought to be harmless but has been implicated as the primary cause of e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury, a serious lung disease. In our study, VEA serves as a proxy for other e-cigarette additives.

This study points out the importance of the templating effect in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite semiconductors grown on graphene. By combining two achiral materials, we report the formation of a chiral composite heterostructure with electronic band splitting. The effect is observed through circularly polarized light emission and detection in a graphene/α-CH(NH)PbI perovskite composite, at ambient temperature and without a magnetic field.

Calmodulin (CaM) is a ubiquitous calcium-sensitive messenger in eukaryotic cells. It was previously shown that CaM possesses an affinity for diverse lipid moieties, including those found on CaM-binding proteins. These facts, together with our observation that CaM accumulates in membrane-rich protrusions of HeLa cells upon increased cytosolic calcium, motivated us to perform a systematic search for unmediated CaM interactions with model lipid membranes mimicking the cytosolic leaflet of plasma membranes.

We analyze the structures, stabilities, and thermochemical properties of polyethylene (PE) oligomer chains cross-linked by metal (M) atoms through C-M-C bonds. Representative PE-M-PE complexes contain between 7 and 15 carbon atoms in each oligomer and one to three Li, Be, Mg, Zn, Ag, or Au cross-linking metal elements. PE-M-PE complexes are quasiplanar with nearly parallel PE chains.

Herein, we performed a simple virus capture and photoinactivation procedure using visible light on phosphatidylcholine vesicles. l-α-Phosphatidylcholine vesicles were enriched by viral receptors, GT1b gangliosides, and the nonpolar photosensitizer 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin. These vesicles absorb in the blue region of visible light with a high quantum yield of antiviral singlet oxygen, O (Δ).

Perforation of the outer mitochondrial membrane triggered by BAX and facilitated by its main activator cBID is a fundamental process in cell apoptosis. Here, we employ a newly designed correlative approach based on a combination of a fluorescence cross correlation binding with a calcein permeabilization assay to understand the involvement of BAX in pore formation under oxidative stress conditions. To mimic the oxidative stress, we enriched liposomal membranes by phosphatidylcholines with truncated sn-2 acyl chains terminated by a carboxyl or aldehyde moiety.

2-Bromo-1-(3,3-dinitroazetidin-1-yl)ethan-1-one (RRx-001) is a hypoxic cell chemotherapeutics with already demonstrated synergism in combined chemo-radiation therapy. The interaction of the compound with secondary low-energy electrons formed in large amounts during the physico-chemical phase of the irradiation may lead to these synergistic effects. The present study focuses on the first step of RRx-001 interaction with low-energy electrons in which a transient anion is formed and fragmented.

Lipid conjugates have advanced the field of lipid-based nanomedicine by promoting active-targeting (ligand, peptide, antibody), stability (PEGylation), controlled release (lipoid prodrug), and probe-based tracking (fluorophore). Recent findings indicate lipid conjugates dissociating from nanomedicine upon encountering a biological environment. Yet, implications for (pre)clinical outcomes remain unclear.

The extent to which electrophores covalently bridged by a saturated linker are electrochemically independent was investigated considering the charge/spin duality of the electron and functionality of the electrophore as a spin carrier upon reduction. By combining computational modeling with electrochemical experiments, we investigated the mechanism by which tethered electrophores react together within 4,4'-oligo[n]methylene-bipyridinium assemblies (with n=2 to 5). We show that native dicationic electrophores (redox state Z=+2) are folded prior to electron injection into the system, allowing the emergence of supra-molecular orbitals (supra-MOs) likely to support the process of the reductive σ bond formation giving cyclomers.

Rationale: In soft chemical ionization mass spectrometry, analyte ions are produced via ion-molecule reactions in the reactor. When an electric field E is imposed, the ion drift velocity v determines the reaction time and the effective ion temperature. Agreement between experimental ion mobilities and theoretical predictions confirms the accuracy of the ion residence time measurement procedure.

New functionalities were added to biocompatible polycaprolactone nanofiber materials through the co-encapsulation of chlorin e6 trimethyl ester (Ce6) photogenerating singlet oxygen and absorbing light both in the blue and red regions, and using 4-(N-(aminopropyl)-3-(trifluoromethyl)-4-nitrobenzenamine)-7-nitrobenzofurazan, NO-photodonor (NOP), absorbing light in the blue region of visible light. Time-resolved and steady-state luminescence, as well as absorption spectroscopy, were used to monitor both photoactive compounds. The nanofiber material exhibited photogeneration of antibacterial species, specifically nitric oxide and singlet oxygen, upon visible light excitation.

Among inherently chiral selectors of axial stereogenicity, usually resulting in very good enantiodiscrimination performances, the biindole-based family has the additional advantage of very easy functionalization of the two nitrogen atoms with a variety of substituents with desirable properties. Aiming to evaluate the possibility of exploiting such feature to enhance the enantiodiscrimination ability of the archetype structure, a series of three inherently chiral monomers were designed and synthesized, characterised by a 2,2'-biindole atropisomeric core conjugated to bithiophene wings enabling fast and regular electrooligomerization, and functionalised at the nitrogen atoms with an ethyl, a methoxyethyl, or a hydroxyethyl substituent. Nitrogen alkylation was also exploited to obtain for the first time the chemical resolution of the biindole selectors without employing chiral HPLC.

Ultrafast high-capacity lithium-ion batteries are extremely desirable for portable electronic devices, where Si is the most promising alternative to the conventional graphite anode due to its very high theoretical capacity. However, the low electronic conductivity and poor Li-diffusivity limit its rate capability. Moreover, high volume expansion/contraction upon Li-intake/uptake causes severe pulverization of the electrode, leading to drastic capacity fading.

Background: Spectroelectrochemistry (SEC) is a valuable analytical tool providing insights to reaction mechanisms and the structure of species involved in charge transfer reactions. Most of commercial SEC setups are based on platinum working electrodes where the adsorption of species involved in reactions often complicates their analysis.
Results: In this work, we employ an array of pencil graphite rods as an optically transparent working electrode in a custom-made air-tight thin-layer cell suitable for the SEC analysis performed here in acetonitrile as a representative non-aqueous solvent.
