Background: Acute respiratory distress syndrome is a devastating complication of severe sepsis. Preclinical models suggest that direct lung injury begins with attack to the lung epithelium, but indirect lung injury results from systemic endothelial damage due to inflammatory mediators. The aim of the present study was to explore the effect of octreotide on lungs in a surgically induced sepsis model in rats.

Background: Recent reports have shown that left-and right-sided colon cancers display different clinical and biological features. Chromosomal instability, epigenetic alterations, and defects in the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) mismatch repair (MMR) system may lead to the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). Besides microsatellite instability (MSI) caused by DNA MMR activity degradation increases the risk for CRC.

We aimed to reveal the anti-convulsant effects sulfasalazine and its mechanism in pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced seizures in rats. Forty-eight male Wistar albino rats (200-250 g) were randomly divided into two groups: 24 for electroencephalography (EEG) recording (group A) and 24 for behavioral studies (group B). About 70 mg/kg PTZ was used for behavioral studies after sulfasalazine administration and 35 mg/kg PTZ was used for EEG recording after sulfasalazine administration.

Objectives: No studies examined the lower extremity-related anaerobic exercise capacity or functional status in adult patients with FMF.

Methods: Twenty-four patients with FMF (12 males) and 24 age-sex-matched healthy controls (13 males) were included in the study. Lower extremity-related anaerobic exercise capacity was assessed by using Wingate Anaerobic Test.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in quickly detecting strokes and classifying their vascular territory using diffusion-weighted images (DWI).
  • Researchers created custom datasets from DWI images of 421 cases, including both stroke patients and healthy individuals, for training and testing the CNN models.
  • Results showed that modified MobileNetV2 and EfficientNet-B0 models achieved high accuracy in detecting strokes (96% and 93%, respectively) and classifying them into specific types (middle cerebral artery or posterior circulation) with effectiveness around 93% and 87%.

Objectives: Although cervical incisions are usually sufficient in mediastinal located thyroid and parathyroid pathologies, sometimes mediastinal approaches are required. In recent years, less invasive methods have been used instead of median sternotomy. In this study, the adequacy of the incision and morbidity in patients who underwent split sternotomy due to retrosternal goiter (RG) and mediastinal parathyroid pathology in our clinic were investigated.

Background: Accurate preoperative localization of the culprit gland is the key point for the surgical treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism. Conventional imaging techniques (ultrasound and Tc99m sestamibi scintigraphy) are usually adequate for preoperative localization. However, in some patient groups, additional imaging modalities may be required since noninvasive techniques may fail.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on establishing critical anatomical angles and distances needed for safe temporal lobe surgery, specifically targeting the temporal stem and temporal horn.
  • Researchers used 3.0 T magnetic resonance imaging on post-mortem brain specimens to gather data, followed by dissection to validate findings.
  • Results indicated that the safe maximum posterior entry point for anterior temporal lobectomy is approximately 47.16 mm, emphasizing the importance of understanding white-matter pathways for effective surgical planning.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of size, location and shape of tympanic membrane perforations on hearing levels of a large study group treated in a tertiary referral centre.

Method: Medical data of 458 patients with tympanic membrane perforations were evaluated.

Results: A total of 336 patients had normal middle-ear findings during the surgical procedures.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is common in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. It is known that impaired forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) is one of the risk factors of cardiovascular disease. Two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2D-STE) can detect deterioration of left atrial mechanical functions in the subclinical stage.

Aim: Although prostate adenocarcinoma is the most common cancer in men, survival is quite high and with the help of histopathological examination using the updated classification, patient management strategies are developing. We aimed to evaluate the correlation between the histopathological features and biochemical recurrence (BCR) in patients who underwent radical prostatectomy (RP) using the new classification.

Methods: A total of 285 prostate adenocarcinoma cases that underwent RP between January 2009 and December 2017 and followed up for at least 3 months were included in the study.

This study aims to assess the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the FSFI-6 questionnaire,an abbreviated version of FSFI-19,a common tool for evaluating female sexual function. The study included 120 female patients aged between 18-65 years who presented to the urology clinic between December 2019 and March 2020. The Turkish version of FSFI-6 was translated from the English version for validation.

Objective: Abdominal hernia repair is a common surgery, with incarcerated hernias accounting for 15% of all cases. In these cases, early diagnosis of intestinal ischaemia and necrosis is crucial to prevent mortality and morbidity. Biomarkers that can predict ischaemic or necrotic status are of vital importance.

June 2021

Department of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, School of the Medicine, Necmettin Erbakan University, Konya, Turkey.

Primary intraosseous vascular malformations (PIVMs) are rare intraosseous lesions, accounting for approximately 0.5-1% of all intraosseous tumours. In this case report, we aimed to present a rare case of intraosseous vascular malformation causing a large lytic area in the parietal bone.

Background: Studies have shown that subclinical left atrial (LA) dysfunction can be diagnosed with two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2D-STE). Although low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, recent studies have reported a paradoxical relationship between LDL-C level and atrial fibrillation. In this study, we investigated the relationship between LDL-C levels and LA function.
