Spastic paraplegia type 3A (SPG3A) is the second most common form of hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP). This autosomal-dominant-inherited motor disorder is caused by heterozygous variants in the ATL1 gene which usually presents as a pure childhood-onset spastic paraplegia. Affected individuals present muscle weakness and spasticity in the lower limbs, with symptom onset in the first decade of life.

Seaweed Superheroes: -Incorporated Electrospun Fibers for Lead Ion Sequestration.

ACS Appl Bio Mater

August 2024

Department of Engineering Science, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, İzmir Katip Çelebi University, İzmir 35620, Turkey.

The efficient removal of lead ions at low concentrations is paramount in combating the significant threat posed by water pollution resulting from industrial activities and population growth. In this study, electrospun /PAN fibers were developed to efficiently remove lead(II) ions from water. The morphology, structure, and mechanical properties of the fibers were examined, highlighting that the augmentation of the surface area through the conversion of into the polymer fibers facilitates increased metal bonding sites during sorption.

Imaging features and management of focal liver lesions.

World J Radiol

June 2024

Department of Surgery, İzmir Katip Celebi University, School of Medicine, İzmir 35150, Türkiye.

Notably, the number of incidentally detected focal liver lesions (FLLs) has increased dramatically in recent years due to the increased use of radiological imaging. The diagnosis of FLLs can be made through a well-documented medical history, physical examination, laboratory tests, and appropriate imaging methods. Although benign FLLs are more common than malignant ones in adults, even in patients with primary malignancy, accurate diagnosis of incidental FLLs is of utmost clinical significance.

Purpose: Invasive micropapillary carcinoma (IMPC) of the breast is known for its high metastatic potential, but the definition of pure and mixed IMPC remains unclear. This retrospective cohort study aims to investigate the prognostic significance of the micropapillary component ratio and the expression of critical molecules of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), including E-cadherin (E-cad), N-cadherin (N-cad), CD44s, and β-catenin (β-cat), in distinguishing between pure and mixed IMPCs.

Methods: We analyzed 100 cases of locally advanced IMPC between 2000 and 2018 and excluded patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Background: The method of stem cell transfer to narrow cochlear canals in vivo to generate hair cells is still an unclear operation. Thus, the development of any possible method that will ensure the usage of medical microrobots in small cochlear workspaces is a challenging procedure.

Methods: The current study tries to introduce a macro-micro manipulator system composed of a 6-DoF industrial serial manipulator as a macro manipulator and a proposed 5-DoF parallel manipulator with dual end effectors as a micro manipulator carrying permanent magnets for tetherless microrobot actuation inside the cochlea.
