This study aims to assess the neurodevelopmental progress of high-risk infants 2 years post implementation of the Neurodevelopmental Follow-Up Unit (NFU) program at our hospital and explore implementation challenges for insights. Infants were assessed using the Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE), The Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS), and Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition (BSID-III). A multidisciplinary team provided comprehensive parent education covering neurologic cues, postural advice, and developmental instructions in accordance with the children's assessment findings.

Partial asynchrony of coniferous forest carbon sources and sinks at the intra-annual time scale.

Nat Commun

August 2024

Laboratoire sur les écosystemes terrestres boreaux, Département des Sciences Fondamentales, Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, 555 boulevard de l'Université, Chicoutimi, QC, G7H2B1, Canada.

As major terrestrial carbon sinks, forests play an important role in mitigating climate change. The relationship between the seasonal uptake of carbon and its allocation to woody biomass remains poorly understood, leaving a significant gap in our capacity to predict carbon sequestration by forests. Here, we compare the intra-annual dynamics of carbon fluxes and wood formation across the Northern hemisphere, from carbon assimilation and the formation of non-structural carbon compounds to their incorporation in woody tissues.

Aim: To evaluate the effects of methylprednisolone and vitamin B12 injection on the regeneration of the nerves after a mental nerve crush injury.

Material And Methods: A total of 40 albino Wistar rats have been randomly divided into four groups: group 1 (n=10): crushlike nerve damage was created by pinching the left mental nerve for 60 s with an aneurysm clip and intraperitoneally administered 1 ml of saline for 14 days; group 2 (n=10): the left mental nerve was pinched for 60 s with an aneurysm clip and intraperitoneally administered 2 mg/kg of methylprednisolone for 14 days; group 3, experimental group (n=10): the left mental nerve was pinched for 60 s with an aneurysm clip and intraperitoneally administered 2 mg/kg of vitamin B12 for 14 days; and group 4, experimental group (n=10): the left mental nerve was pinched for 60 s and intraperitoneally administered 2 mg/kg of methylprednisolone and 2 mg/kg of vitamin B12 for 14 days. All rats were sacrificed on the 28th postoperative day, and histopathological evaluation was performed.

Asherman's syndrome, which can occur during the regeneration of damaged uterine tissue after surgical interventions, is a significant health problem in women. This study aimed to acquire and characterize cyclodextrin-based hydrogels, which can be used to prevent Asherman's syndrome, and investigate their effectiveness with biomedical applications. A series of hydrogels were synthesized from the cross-linking of β-cyclodextrin and different polyphenols with epoxy-functional PEG.

Exposure to ionizing radiation leads to oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, resulting in neurocognitive impairments. Adverse effects are also associated with glutamate-induced excitotoxicity due to alterations in the composition of glutamate receptors. Ketamine, which is a noncompetitive NMDA glutamate receptor antagonist, has been stated to exert an impact on glutamatergic receptors.

Microneedle arrays are minimally invasive devices that have been extensively investigated for the transdermal/intradermal delivery of drugs/bioactives. Here, we demonstrate the release of bioactive molecules (estradiol, melatonin and meropenem) from poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), pHEMA, hydrogel-based microneedle patches in vitro. The pHEMA hydrogel microneedles had mechanical properties that were sufficiently robust to penetrate soft tissues (exemplified here by phantom tissues).

Background: Diabetes foot infection is a very important public health problem that causes serious health problems, mortality, and high health expenditures, and is one of the most important complications of diabetes mellitus. There are concerns that approaches such as limited personal visits to doctors, avoidance of hospitals, and restrictions on nonemergency surgical procedures during the coronavirus disease of 2019 pandemic pose a threat to those with diabetic foot problems, including diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), ischemia, and infection, resulting in increased limb loss and mortality.

Methods: This multicenter, retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted in 14 tertiary care hospitals from various regions of Turkey.

Association of antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation in Escherichia coli ST131/O25b.

Acta Microbiol Immunol Hung

September 2024

3Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Izmir Katip Çelebi University, 35620, Izmir, Turkey.

Urinary tract infections are becoming difficult to treat every year due to antibiotic resistance. Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) isolates pose a threat with a combined expression of multidrug-resistance and biofilm formation. ST131 clone is a high-risk pandemic clone due to its strong association with antimicrobial resistance, which has been reported frequently in recent years.

Spinal bone lesions encompass a wide array of pathologies, spanning from benign abnormalities to aggressive malignancies, such as diffusely localized metastases. Early detection and accurate differentiation of the underlying diseases is crucial for every patient's clinical treatment and outcome, with radiological imaging being a core element in the diagnostic pathway. Across numerous pathologies and imaging techniques, deep learning (DL) models are progressively considered a valuable resource in the clinical setting.

Objectives: Omega-3 supplementation as an adjunct to nonsurgical periodontal treatment has been reported to have a positive effect on healing in periodontitis patients. However, there is a lack of information on the effects of periodontal healing in smokers with periodontitis. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the effect of omega-3 supplementation given as an adjunct to nonsurgical periodontal treatment on clinical parameters in smoker and non-smoker periodontitis patients.

Objective: This study was designed to determine the potential prognostic value of radiomic texture analysis and metabolic-volumetric parameters obtained from positron emission tomography (PET) in primary mass and metastatic hilar/mediastinal lymph nodes in stage 2-3 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Methods: Images of patients diagnosed with stage 2-3 NSCLC who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging for staging up to 4 weeks before the start of treatment were evaluated using LIFEx software. Volume of interest (VOI) was generated from the primary tumor and metastatic lymph node separately, and volumetric and textural features were obtained from these VOIs.

The prognostic significance of angiogenesis has been demonstrated in various types of cancer. However, in colorectal cancer (CRC), there are conflicting results regarding the relationship between angiogenesis and clinical-histopathological prognostic factors. Mast cells are immune system cells found in the inflammatory microenvironment; their role in carcinogenesis and prognosis remains unclear although they are considered to cause cancer development and progression.

Spastic paraplegia type 3A (SPG3A) is the second most common form of hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP). This autosomal-dominant-inherited motor disorder is caused by heterozygous variants in the ATL1 gene which usually presents as a pure childhood-onset spastic paraplegia. Affected individuals present muscle weakness and spasticity in the lower limbs, with symptom onset in the first decade of life.
