August 2024

Department of Internal Medicine Division of Hematology, Izmir Bakircay University Faculty of Medicine, Cigli Hospital, İzmir-Türkiye.

Background: This study explored the potential of non-contrast thoracic computed tomography (CT) to predict anemia by correlating CT parameters with hemoglobin (Hb) levels in patients who underwent non-contrast thoracic CT for various indications.

Methods: This retrospective study included 150 patients who underwent non-contrast thoracic CT scans and complete blood counts within 24 hours at our center between January and June 2023. Exclusion criteria included acute bleeding, iron accumulation disorders, recent transfusions, pregnancy, and certain thoracic CT artifacts.

The demand for Janus Kinase-2 (JAK2) testing has been disproportionate to the low yield of positive results, which highlights the need for more discerning test strategies. The aim of this study is to introduce an artificial intelligence application as a more rational approach for testing JAK2 mutations in cases of erythrocytosis. Test results were sourced from samples sent to a tertiary hospital's genetic laboratory between 2017 and 2023, meeting 2016 World Health Organization criteria for JAK2V617F mutation testing.

Objectives: Minimally invasive transoral organ preservation surgeries are being increasingly used for supraglottic tumors. This study investigates the long-term functional and oncologic outcomes of transoral robotic supraglottic laryngectomy (TORS-SGL).

Materials And Methods: Twenty-three patients with supraglottic laryngeal cancer who underwent TORS-SGL between 2012 and 2015 at a tertiary referral hospital were retrospectively analyzed with at least 5 years of follow-up.

Purpose: To prevent intraoperative inadvertent hypothermia (IIH), resistive products and forced-air warming systems are often used simultaneously. There is insufficient evidence to show whether this application is clinically more effective than a single active warming device. The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy a single intraoperative active warming method with combined methods in IIH prevention.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between hepatic steatosis (HS), pancreatic steatosis (PS), and coexisting HS and PS and the Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia total severity score (TSS) and prognosis, assessed through computed tomography (CT), and to evaluate the degree of effectiveness of the three steatosis conditions on TSS and prognosis.

Methods: This retrospective study involved 461 patients (255 male and 206 female, median age of 53 years) with COVID-19 who underwent unenhanced chest CT. HS, PS, and coexisting HS and PS, assessed through CT, were compared with patient demographics, comorbidities, TSS, hospitalization and intubation requirements, and mortality rates.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates whether non-ionizing radiofrequency (RF) fields can trigger an adaptive response (AR) in adult mice and explores the molecular mechanisms behind this response.
  • Conducted on 24 adult male Swiss-Albino mice, the experiment exposed two groups to 900 MHz GSM signals while two control groups were not exposed.
  • Results indicated that increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the adaptive response group may have activated stress responses and influenced DNA repair gene expressions, while certain antioxidant levels decreased, suggesting complex interactions between RF exposure and cellular mechanisms.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of coenzyme Q10 in the treatment of endometriosis rat models. Twenty seven Sprague Dawley rats were divided into four groups; Control Group ( = 7; Endometriosis group), Reference Group ( = 6; Endometriosis + Buserelin acetate, 20 mg/kg), CoQ10 Group-I ( = 7; Endometriosis + CoQ10, 50 mg/kg) and CoQ10 Group-II ( = 7; Endometriosis + CoQ10, 100 mg/kg). At the end of the experiment, all the rats were sacrificed, and the volume and histoarchitecture of endometrial implants were evaluated.

Objectives: To clarify the effects of laparoscopic cystectomy of endometriomas on intrauterine insemination with controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH + IUI) success in women with the disease.

Material And Methods: We performed a retrospective study with endometrioma patients having at least one patent fallopian tube. The study group consisted of 57 infertile patients with a history of laparoscopic cystectomy who underwent 83 COH + IUI cycles.

Objectives: This study makes a retrospective examination of exploring the prognostic value of fluorine-fluorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) related metabolic-volumetric variables, nutritional status, and immune and inflammatory markers on progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in advanced adenocarcinoma patients with positive epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations undergoing EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy.

Methods: A retrospective examination was made of patients diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma who underwent F-FDG PET/CT imaging for staging maximum four weeks before starting treatment, between January 2015 and July 2020. Included in the study were 68 patients identified histopathologically to have locally advanced/metastatic EGFR mutation-positive adenocarcinoma, and who underwent EGFR TKI therapy.

Background: Preterm birth (PTB) is an important cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity. Spontaneous PTB (sPTB) is the most common cause of PTB. In patients with a singleton pregnancy, progesterone treatment appears to reduce the rate of spontaneous preterm birth in those with a previous history of spontaneous preterm labor and/or cervical shortening in the current pregnancy.

Backround: Optic neuritis(ON) is a common feature of both relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis(RRMS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders(NMOSD). It is crucial to early differentiate these two diseases, as they differ in pathophysiology and treatment.

Objective: To compare NMOSD and RRMS patients using optical coherence tomography(OCT) and OCT angiography(OCTA) to assess retinal microvascular network differences.

Background: Following the discovery that fetal DNA originates from the trophoblastic cells of the placenta, the contribution of the cell-free DNA test in placenta-related obstetric complications has begun to be investigated. Compared to uncomplicated pregnancies, higher fetal fractions were detected in placenta accreta spectrum and placenta previa, which are among placenta-related obstetric complications. However, this data applies only to advanced gestational weeks.

Background: The brain extracellular matrix (ECM) is composed of glycoproteins deriving from the cell membrane and joining into nets called perineuronal nets (PNNs). The ECM glycoproteins limit neuroplasticity, cell proliferation, and differentiation. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is provided by electrical currents that may alter several cascades and biophysical effects.
