Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the clinical features and prognostic factors of 178 thyroid carcinoma patients treated at İzmir Atatürk Training Hospital between 2010 and 2011.
  • Findings indicate that factors such as tumor size, vascular invasion, and thyroglobulin levels significantly impact the risk of metastasis, while gender and age did not show significant differences across patient groups.
  • The results suggest that while certain characteristics are correlated with prognosis, the overall impact of age and gender on patient outcomes in thyroid cancer is minimal.

Metastasis from serous carcinoma of the ovary usually occurs in the subdiaphragmatic region. Metastasis to the breast and/or axillary-intramammary lymph node is very rare. It usually occurs in advanced disease, and it is important to distinguish a primary breast cancer from an ovarian cancer metastasis since the management of these two entities is totally different.

Department of Obstetric and Gynecology, Izmir Ataturk Training and Research Hospital, Gazeteci Hasan Tahsin Highroad, 253 Street, Number: 43 Basin Sitesi, Izmir 35360, Turkey.

Purpose: To investigate the diagnostic value of blood flow measurements in endometrial, myometrial and uterine vasculature by transvaginal Doppler ultrasonography in the differentiation of the neoplastic endometrial pathologies in women with postmenopausal bleeding.

Methods: 106 women who presented with postmenopausal bleeding were enrolled in a prospective cohort study. Endometrial thickness, pulsatility and resistance indices of the uterine, myometrial and endometrial vasculature, endometrial histopathology were measured by transvaginal Doppler sonography.

Background/aims: Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) has been shown to be superior to conventional CT in detecting and staging pancreatic cancer. We conducted a prospective trial to compare EUS and MDCT, in discriminating benign/malignant, in determining local and vascular invasion of a suspected pancreatic cancer and deciding its resectability.

Methodology: The study was performed at the Gastroenterology Department of Izmir Ataturk Training and Research Hospital, from June 2009 to June 2010, all patients with suspected pancreatic and periampullary tumors referred to our department were enrolled.

Objective: This study aimed to identify the effect of various risk factors as the promoters of HPV infection, and to identify which HPV-positive women may have an increased risk of developing cervical cancer.

Methods: Smear preparations were examined and classified according to the Bethesda system. HPV-DNA detection and genotyping was carried out using polymerase chain reaction combined with reverse hybridization line-probe assays.

For detection of Helicobacter pylori, bacterial culture and histopathological examination are invasive in nature, whereas the fast urease test and urea breath test are non-invasive and indirect methods of detection. Stool antibody tests and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect genomic DNA are serological methods, which are preferred to invasive examinations. Our aim was to assess diagnostic specifity and sensitivity of stool antibody tests, with histopathological examination as the golden standard and to compare results with fast urease test findings.

This retrospective study investigated preoperative markers of appendix perforation in 351 acute appendicitis cases: group 1, appendicitis not histologically confirmed; group 2, appendicitis without perforation or gangrenous changes; and group 3, histologically confirmed perforated appendicitis with gangrenous changes. In group 3, symptom duration was significantly longer, and white blood cell (WBC) and bilirubin values significantly higher, than for the other groups. Symptom duration, gender, bilirubin and elevated WBC were significantly associated with early diagnosis of acute appendicitis in univariate analysis.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) of the urinary bladder is a very rare clinical entity. The association of such a tumor with urothelial carcinoma is even more unusual. Differential diagnosis between coexisting two distinct primary tumors and carcinosarcoma of the urinary bladder is very important as both the treatment and prognosis vary widely.

Migration of total hip arthroplasty components is generally associated with a medial acetabular wall defect and may cause various intrapelvic complications. This is often a result of the destructive bone loss that takes place with infection. To our knowledge, this is the first report that presents complete intrapelvic migration of a femoral stem of total hip arthroplasty due to septic loosening with an intact medial acetabular wall.
