An earthquake struck the eastern part of Japan on March 11, 2011. The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was severely damaged by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami, leading to the emission of large amounts of radioactive pollutants, including Cs and Cs, into the environment. From August 23 to September 1 in 2011, and from August 27 to September 4 in 2013, we collected samples of animals, plants, fungi and lichens from Svalbard, Norway and measured the radioactivity of Cs and Cs contained in the samples.

Effect of food thickener and jelly wafer on the pharmacokinetics of levofloxacin orally disintegrating tablets.

This study was designed to determine the effects of a food thickener and deglutition aid jelly for oral administration, jelly wafer, on the pharmacokinetics of levofloxacin orally disintegrating tablets. With an increase in immersion time, the disintegration time of levofloxacin orally disintegrating tablets immersed in food thickener was prolonged, whereas that of the tablets immersed in jelly wafer was shortened. The dissolution behavior of non-immersed levofloxacin orally disintegrating tablets was not similar to that of tablets immersed in food thickener, but was similar to that of tablets immersed in jelly wafer.

It is critical for development of high-quality antibodies in research and diagnostics to predict accurately their cross-reactivities with "off-target" molecules, which potentially induce false results. Herein, we report a good example of such a cross-reactivity for an off-target due to a stereochemical environment of epitopes, which does not simply depend on amino acid sequences. We found that significant subpopulation of a polyclonal peptide antibody against Bcnt (Bucentaur) (anti-BCNT-C antibody) cross-reacted with a completely different protein, glutamine synthetase (GS), and identified four amino acids, GYFE, in its C-terminal region as the core amino acids for the cross-reaction.

We recently reported that a synthetic N-terminally biotinylated peptide, BP21, alleviates hypothermia and vascular hyperpermeability during anaphylactic reactions in a mouse model of anaphylaxis via the direct binding of a Tyr-Lys-Asp-Gly sequence in the peptide to PAF. The vitamin D receptor (VDR) is a nuclear receptor for the active form of vitamin D, 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D , and regulates various physiologic processes, such as bone and calcium metabolism, cellular proliferation and differentiation, and immunity. In this study, we first performed a disintegration test of the voglibose orally disintegrating (V-OD) tablet immersed in jelly-wafer (JW, V-ODims/jw) for 10 min and compared it with the disintegration time of V-OD that was not immersed in JW. We then orally administered the V-ODims/jw tablet to 7 healthy adults and compared the shift in blood glucose levels (BGLs), after loading with a sucrose solution (Suc-sol, 100 g/150 mL), with that after administration of the non-immersed V-OD tablet. The disintegration time of V-ODims/jw tablet was shorter than that of V-OD.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to compare the range of motion (ROM) during supine-to-sitting position (StSP) movement between healthy young and elderly participants to understand age-related tendencies, which is beneficial for the assessment and treatment of frail elderly. Myelofibrosis in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) with mutations such as JAK2V617F is an unfavorable sign for uncontrollable disease progression in the clinic and is complicated with osteosclerosis whose pathogenesis is largely unknown. Because several studies have revealed that macrophages are an indispensable supporter for bone-forming osteoblasts, we speculated that macrophages might play a significant role in the proliferation of collagen-producing myofibroblasts in marrow fibrotic tissues. Here, we show that myelofibrosis critically depends on macrophages whose differentiation is skewed by vitamin D receptor (VDR) signaling.

This study examined whether auditory pitch and loudness affect the perception of object’s weight. Two series experiments showed that the object with High-Pitch sound was perceived as being lighter than the object with Low-Pitch sound and that the perceived weight was not affected by loudness. Because auditory pitch has a relationship to the weight of an object while loudness has a relationship to the distance of a placed object, the perceived weight was affected by auditory pitch not loudness.

β-Glycoprotein I (β-GPI) is a plasma protein that binds to oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and negatively charged substances, and inhibits platelet activation and blood coagulation. In this study, we investigated the interaction of β-GPI with a negatively charged lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) in platelet aggregation and blood clotting. Two negatively charged lysophospholipids, LPA and lysophosphatidylserine, specifically inhibited the binding of β-GPI to oxidized LDL in a concentration-dependent manner.

Perlecan (HSPG2), a heparan sulfate proteoglycan, is a component of basement membranes and participates in a variety of biological activities. Here, we show physiological roles of perlecan in both obesity and the onset of metabolic syndrome. The perinatal lethality-rescued perlecan knockout (Hspg2-Tg) mice showed a smaller mass and cell size of white adipose tissues than control (WT-Tg) mice.

The probes for detection of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) in plasma and in atherosclerotic plaques are expected to facilitate the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of atherosclerosis. Recently, we have reported that a heptapeptide (Lys-Trp-Tyr-Lys-Asp-Gly-Asp, KP6) coupled through the ε-amino group of N-terminal Lys to fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), (FITC)KP6, can be useful as a fluorescent probe for specific detection of ox-LDL. In the present study, to develop a novel fluorescent peptide for specific detection of ox-LDL, we investigated the interaction (with ox-LDL) of an undecapeptide corresponding to positions 41 to 51 of a potent antimicrobial protein (royalisin, which consists of 51 residues; from royal jelly of honeybees), conjugated at the N-terminus to FITC in the presence of 6-amino-n-caproic acid (AC) linker, (FITC-AC)-royalisin P11, which contains both sequences, Phe-Lys-Asp and Asp-Lys-Tyr, similar to Tyr-Lys-Asp in (FITC)KP6.

Introduction: Demographic changes as a result of evacuation in the acute phase of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster are not well evaluated. We estimated post-disaster demographic transitions in Minamisoma City-located 14-38 km north of the nuclear plant-in the first month of the disaster; and identified demographic factors associated with the population remaining in the affected areas.

Ouabagenin (OBG) is an aglycone of the cardiotonic steroid ouabain and until now was considered a biologically inactive biosynthetic precursor. Herein, we revealed that OBG functions as a novel class of ligand for the liver X receptor (LXR). Luciferase reporter assays and in silico docking studies suggested that OBG has LXR-selective agonistic activity.
