: In recent years, cardiac dysfunction in childhood cancer survivors has become an important issue. Studies are focusing on identifying means for the early identification of patients at risk. Considering this, our study aims to investigate 24-hour Holter electrocardiogram (ECG) repolarization changes throughout doxorubicin (DOX) and cyclophosphamide (CPM) administration in pediatric patients treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

Lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, is characterized by its aggressive nature and poor prognosis. As traditional chemotherapy has the disadvantage of non-specificity, nanomedicine offers innovative approaches for targeted therapy, particularly through the development of nanoparticles that can deliver therapeutic agents directly to cancer cells, minimizing systemic toxicity and enhancing treatment efficacy. VEGF and VEGFR are shown to be responsible for activating different signaling cascades, which will ultimately enhance tumor development, angiogenesis, and metastasis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated disease characterized by inflammation, demyelination, and neurodegeneration within the central nervous system. Brain plasticity, the brain's ability to adapt its structure and function, plays a crucial role in mitigating MS's impact. This paper explores the potential benefits of lifestyle changes and nutraceuticals on brain plasticity in the MS population.

Unlabelled: Non-functioning (NF) accidentally detected PitNETs (PIs) are common findings of CT/MRI scans currently. Data concerning their behavior vary, and some PIs will potentially experience a size change over time that might become clinically relevant.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate CT-related PIs diameters following 3 aspects: a cross-sectional analysis based on the age' groups at first PI diagnosis and on the gender distribution and a longitudinal analysis in PIs with <0.

Article Synopsis
  • Colorectal surgery often leads to significant postoperative complications, mainly infections, potentially due to monocyte epigenetic changes and immune tolerance.
  • A study involving 100 patients measured changes in damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) and cytokine production, alongside exploratory analyses of proteins and DNA accessibility in monocytes.
  • Results showed significant increases in plasma DAMPs, particularly HMGB1 and mitochondrial DNA post-surgery, while in vitro tests revealed that HSP70 and HMGB1 reduced the cytokine production capacity of immune cells.

Gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) have been explored as potential vectors for enhancing the antitumor efficacy of doxorubicin (DOX) while minimizing its cardiotoxic effects. However, the impacts of DOX Au-NPs on cardiac function and oxidative stress remain inadequately understood. This study aimed to explore the effects of DOX Au-NPs in comparison to free DOX, focusing on oxidative stress markers, inflammation, ultrastructural changes, and cardiac function.

Incidentalomas have an increasing incidence all over the world due to a larger access to imaging assessments, and endocrine incidentalomas make no exception in this matter, including pituitary incidentalomas (PIs). Our objective was to analyse the dynamic changes amid a second computed tomography (CT) scan after adult patients were initially confirmed with a PI (non-functioning micro-adenoma). This was a multi-centric, longitudinal, retrospective study in adults (aged between 20 and 70 y) amid real-world data collection.

Automating Dental Condition Detection on Panoramic Radiographs: Challenges, Pitfalls, and Opportunities.

Diagnostics (Basel)

October 2024

OMFS IMPATH Research Group, Department of Imaging and Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, 3000 Louvain, Belgium.

The integration of AI into dentistry holds promise for improving diagnostic workflows, particularly in the detection of dental pathologies and pre-radiotherapy screening for head and neck cancer patients. This study aimed to develop and validate an AI model for detecting various dental conditions, with a focus on identifying teeth at risk prior to radiotherapy. A YOLOv8 model was trained on a dataset of 1628 annotated panoramic radiographs and externally validated on 180 radiographs from multiple centers.

Background: Functional defecation disorders (FDD) are a common etiology of refractory chronic constipation (CC). FDD diagnosis (dyssynergic defecation [DD] and inadequate defecatory propulsion [IDP]), requires diagnostic tests including anorectal manometry (ARM) and balloon expulsion test (BET). Biofeedback (BF) is the treatment of choice for DD.

The presence of intact arachnoid membranes between skull base meningiomas and critical neurovascular structures is crucial for predicting surgical outcomes, understanding tumor development and growth, and planning the feasibility of tumor resection or the need for adjuvant treatments. While neurosurgeons often utilize the subarachnoid cisterns to enhance access to these tumors and facilitate their removal, a comprehensive review aimed at health professionals involved in the diagnosis and treatment of this complex pathology, including radiologists, neurologists, oncologists, ophthalmologists, and neurosurgeons is still lacking. This study aims to summarize the interaction between skull base meningiomas, subarachnoid cisterns, and arachnoid membranes, emphasizing their significance in both the diagnosis and treatment of this pathology.

Illicit drugs are a global burden, not only for society, but also for the various control authorities for which its rapid on-site detection remains a challenge. In this context, the potential of a voltammetric electronic tongue (ET) for the analysis of different drugs is evaluated herein. Concretely, the discrimination and identification of cocaine, heroin, 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), methamphetamine and ketamine in self-prepared and real samples were attempted.

Background: Dysregulated pathways in cancer may be hub addicted. Identifying these dysregulated networks for targeting might lead to novel therapeutic options.

Objective: Considering the hypothesis that central hubs are associated with increased lethality, identifying key hub targets within central networks could lead to the development of novel drugs with improved efficacy in advanced metastatic solid tumors.

Objectives: Psychiatric symptoms occur frequently in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH), which may affect quality of life, sexual risk behavior, and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Data from large cohorts are limited, and symptoms are often analyzed in isolation. Therefore, we applied a network analysis to assess the interrelatedness of mental health indicators in a large cohort of PLWH.

Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is an increasingly prevalent condition, especially in older populations, and presents significant challenges due to its association with right heart failure, hospital admissions, and high mortality rates. The management of TR has evolved, with new percutaneous valve repair and replacement techniques emerging alongside traditional surgical approaches. However, accurately assessing right ventricular (RV) function-a key prognostic factor in TR-remains difficult due to the RV's unique anatomy and sensitivity to loading conditions.
