Background: The short-term outcomes of chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with S-1 (a combination of tegafur, gimeracil, and oteracil) following limited surgery for patients with T1 or T2 lower rectal cancer have shown encouraging results.
Objectives: This study was designed to delve deeper into the long-term outcomes of CRT with S-1 after limited surgery, with the goal of evaluating both the long-term efficacy and potential risks associated with this treatment approach in patients diagnosed with T1 or T2 lower rectal cancer.
Methods: This was conducted as a multicenter, single-arm, prospective phase II trial.

Background: The appropriate surgical procedure for patients with upper third early gastric cancer is controversial. We compared total gastrectomy (TG) with proximal gastrectomy (PG) in this patient population.
Methods: A multicenter, non-randomized trial was conducted, with patients treated with PG or TG.

Background And Aim: Although the serum sodium level has been reported to be a prognostic and predictive marker for the therapeutic effects of lung cancer and renal cell carcinoma treated with molecular targeted therapy, the serum sodium level has not been investigated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients treated with sorafenib. The aim of our analysis was to assess the prognostic role of serum sodium levels in these patients.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 341 HCC patients treated with sorafenib between 2009 and 2012 in our hospital and other related institutions.

Treatment options for bronchial fistula (BF) after pneumonectomy are often limited and carry significant morbidity and mortality. The patient underwent right extrapleural pneumonectomy for malignant pleural mesothelioma had BF without macroscopic fistula found by bronchography. We treated this minor BF using bronchoscopy with the administration of OK-432, fibroblast growth factor basic, and fibrin glue sealant.

Graves' disease (GD) accounts for a large proportion of pediatric hyperthyroidism, and the first-line treatment is antithyroid drug (ATD) therapy. Methimazole (MMI) is effective in most patients but is associated with significant adverse events (AEs). We reviewed the medical records of GD patients (n = 56) with onset age of <15 yr and investigated the relationship between MMI dose and AEs.

Purpose: We have developed a novel molecular method of diagnosis using the technique of transcriptase-reverse transcriptase concerted reaction (TRC) for the detection of cancer micrometastasis. This study prospectively examined the clinical importance of the TRC diagnosis with peritoneal lavage fluids collected from gastric cancer operations at multiple institutes.
Methods: TRC amplification targeting carcinoembryonic antigen mRNA was applied to detect gastric cancer cells in peritoneal lavage fluids obtained during gastric cancer resections from nine different hospitals.

We describe the case of a 74-year-old man with large mixed craniopharyngioma who was successfully treated under the concept of neuroendoscopic palliation. He recovered immediately postoperatively and has done well in the 4 years following surgery.

We report five cases with caudate infarction due to Heubner's recurring artery occlusion, in which we conducted detailed memory examinations in terms of explicit memory and implicit memory. We performed the auditory verbal learning test as explicit memory tasks, and motor and cognitive procedural memory tasks, developed by Komori, as implicit memory tasks. Comparing normal control subjects with patients with left caudate infarction due to Heubner's recurring artery occlusion demonstrated lower scores on both declarative and motor procedural memory tasks.

Haploinsufficiency of the short stature homeobox-containing (SHOX) gene causes Turner skeletal features, a certain proportion of idiopathic short stature and Leri-Weill dyschondrosteosis (LWD). Here we report a Japanese female with LWD. Her physical growth, skeletal deformity, and endocrine status were recorded longitudinally.

Many studies have demonstrated that sentinel nodes can accurately determine the regional nodal status in breast cancer and malignant melanoma. Since this was demonstrated sentinel node biopsy has been performed for various solid malignancies. However, the optimal procedure for sentinel node biopsy remains unknown.

Many studies have reported the benefit of hepatic resection for metastatic tumors from colorectal cancer. However, the significance of hepatic resection for gastric metastasis has been controversial. Peritoneal metastases were recognized in 40% of gastric cancer patients with liver metastases, and metastatic lesions in both lobes of the liver were seen in 60% of patients.

We report a case of a hypophyseal granular cell tumour (GCT) presenting with visual failure and hyperprolactinaemia (serum prolactin level, 274 ng/ml; normal, < 10). Magnetic resonance images demonstrated an intrasellar mass with anterosuperior extension. As the patient had chronic renal failure (CRF) and hyperprolactinaemia is frequent in CRF patients, a firm preoperative diagnosis of prolactinoma could not be made.

We report a patient with a spheno-orbital meningioma having unusual clinical and radiological features. Eight days before consultation, this 66-year-old female developed right exophthalmos associated with periorbital pain. Neuroradiological features included, (1) multilocular intratumoral cyst on enhanced CT, (2) preferential extradural growth with prominent bony destruction and intratumoral hemorrhage on MRI.

We report an 11-year-old boy with a sinus pericranii. Magnetic resonance images demonstrated a small hole in the cranium underneath the subcutaneous mass. Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) with sequential two-dimensional time-of-flight (2D-TOF) method demonstrated that the venous flow via the sinus pericranii was directed from the intra- to the extracranial venous system (the drainer type).

We report a case of isolated dural metastasis from colon cancer. Neuroradiologic and intraoperative findings indicated that the tumor was extra-axial, and histopathologic examination resulted in the correct diagnosis. Notable neuroradiologic findings of the present dural-based tumor were: diploic fat MRI signal disappeared in the tumor associated calvaria where bony change was absent on bone-window CT; abnormal subgaleal and epidural tissues were seen on MRI, both of which contained clusters of adenocarcinoma cells histopathologically.

It is now recognized that spinal dural arteriovenous fistula causes myelopathy, resulting from congestive venous hypertension of the spinal cord. We have recently encountered a rare case of high cervical spinal cord dural arteriovenous fistula which caused intracranial subarachnoid hemorrhage. The patient was a 62-year-old female, who had exhibited an abrupt onset of severe headache and loss of consciousness.

Cochlear blood flow (CoBF) was measured by intravital microscopy (IVM) and laser Doppler (LD) methods in normal guinea pigs and after a single norepinephrine (NE) injection into the carotid artery. CoBF changed in proportion to BP changes in normal animals. CoBF values by LD correlated well (r = 0.

We report our experience with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) in the treatment of ureteral and cystine stones, which are known to be difficult to treat by this method. First, in order to determine the effectiveness of the ureteral catheter in the destruction of ureteral stones, we compared the clinical results of 121 patients treated without the catheter and 141 patients inserted with the catheter. There was no significant difference in the success rate between the two groups regardless of stone size, which indicates that the use of the ureteral catheter had no effect on the outcome of treatment.

The kidney stone of less than 2 cm can be effectively treated by extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) using a Dornier kidney lithotripter HM3 without any complication that might need other therapy. However, in the case of a large kidney stone and ureteral stone, there are some difficulties in the treatment with ESWL. To obtain better results for these stones with a Dornier kidney lithotripter HM3, in the patient having a large stone a double-J stent was placed and ureteral catheter was indwelling for the ureteral stone before ESWL.
