Gamma and Deltacoronaviruses in quail and pheasants from Northern Italy1.

In view of the restricted knowledge on the diversity of coronaviruses in poultry other than chicken, this study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity of coronaviruses in quail, pheasant, and partridge from two regions of Northern Italy. To this end, pools of tracheal and cloacal swabs from European quail (Coturnix Coturnix) and intestinal tract from pheasants (Phasianus Colchicus) and partridge (Perdix Perdix) flocks, with or without enteric signs, were collected during 2015. Avian coronavirus (Gammacoronavirus) was detected in quail not vaccinated against Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) and in pheasants vaccinated with an IBV Massachusetts serotype.

We evaluated the clinical impact of a high definition micro-multileaf collimator and a linac-integrated cone-beam computed tomography in 142 patients treated with conformal radiotherapy for localized prostate cancer to a total dose of 76 Gy. Details on treatment toxicity and tumour control were collected. The 3 years biochemical relapse-free survival was 90%.

Fox rabies re-emerged in north-eastern Italy at the end of 2008 and circulated until early 2011. As with previous rabies epidemics, the Italian cases were linked to the epidemiological situation in adjacent regions. Until 2009, bovine besnoitiosis had never been considered endemic in Italy and the only report on the disease in this country referred to animals imported from France shortly before. However, recently, an autochthonous outbreak of bovine besnoitiosis was reported in four herds located at the intersection of the borders between Emilia-Romagna, Toscana and Marche (Northern Apennine Mountains), which has led to an increased awareness concerning this disease. The present study describes a further outbreak of bovine besnoitiosis in Italy.

Productive infection of non-proliferating cells by cytomegalovirus (CMV) requires the coordinated stimulation of host biochemical pathways that prepare cells to synthesize DNA. Here we illustrate the ability of human CMV (HCMV) to stimulate cellular thymidylate synthase (TS) gene expression in quiescent human embryonic lung fibroblasts. TS mRNA and protein levels are nearly undetectable in quiescent cells, but are greatly increased following HCMV infection.

In Shigella flexneri and enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC) the expression of the virulence-plasmid(pINV)-carried potential pathogenesis-associated apy gene, which encodes apyrase (ATP diphosphohydrolase), is regulated by the same regulators that govern the expression of virulence genes. To understand the transcriptional organization of the apy gene, the authors sequenced an 8023 bp PstI fragment of the pINV of EIEC strain HN280, which encompasses apy as well as its adjacent genes. The Towne strain of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), originally recovered from the urine of a congenitally infected newborn, was attenuated through 125 passages in human embryonic lung fibroblast cell cultures. Although reliable markers of attenuation were not identified, the virus was shown to be attenuated by inoculation of both healthy human volunteers and immunocompromised patients. More recently, Towne (like other laboratory-adapted strains) was shown not to have two biological properties typical of recent clinical isolates: endothelial cell tropism and polymorphonuclear leukocyte tropism.

This report describes a new behavioural response of Bacillus cereus that consists of a surface-induced differentiation of elongated and hyperflagellated swarm cells exhibiting the ability to move collectively across the surface of the medium. The discovery of swarming motility in B. cereus paralleled the isolation of a spontaneous non-swarming mutant that was found to carry a deletion of fliY, the homologue of which, in Bacillus subtilis, encodes an essential component of the flagellar motor-switch complex.

The respiratory chain of Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes KF707 in membranes isolated from cells grown in the presence or absence of the toxic oxyanion tellurite (TeO3(2-)) was examined. The antigenic linear map of swine vesicular disease virus (SVDV) has been studied using a repertoire of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) raised against a recombinant SVDV polyprotein, P1. Peptide-scanning analyses, cross-reactivity studies with homologous and heterologous viruses and predicted location on a computer-generated three-dimensional model of the capsid proteins have allowed the identification of five main linear sites. Two sites, the N terminus of VP3 and amino acids 51-60 on VP1, correspond to internal areas, conserved not only between SVDV isolates but also in the related enterovirus coxsackievirus B5.

Previous studies have shown that the human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) E6 protein binds to p300/CBP and abrogates its transcriptional co-activator function. However, there is little information on the biological consequences of this interaction and discrepancy as to whether the interaction is high-risk E6 specific or not. We performed a series of studies to compare the interactions of HPV-18 and HPV-11 E6 with p300, and showed that both high- and low- risk E6 proteins bind p300.

H3N2 influenza viruses from domestic chickens in Italy: an increasing role for chickens in the ecology of influenza?

In Italy, multiple H3N2 influenza viruses were isolated from chickens with mild respiratory disease and were shown to replicate in the respiratory tracts of experimentally infected chickens; this finding is the first to show that H3N2 influenza viruses can replicate and cause disease in chickens. H3N2 influenza viruses in pigs on nearby farms seemed a likely source of the virus; however, antigenic and molecular analyses revealed that the gene segments of the viruses in chickens were mainly of Eurasian avian origin and were distinguishable from those isolated from pigs and wild aquatic birds in Italy. Thus, several different H3 influenza viruses were circulating in Italy, but we failed to identify the source of the chicken H3N2 influenza viruses that have disappeared subsequently from Italian poultry.

In studies on the antigenic conservation of these sites, the four antigenic/genetic groups of SVDV described showed distinguishable patterns, confirming this classification. By sequencing mAb-resistant mutants, the five sites have been mapped precisely and localized on a three-dimensional model of the SVDV capsid.

This work analysed the genomic variants of a new HCMV polymorphic locus, open reading frame (ORF) UL73. This ORF encodes the envelope glycoprotein gpUL73 (gN), which associates in a high molecular mass complex with its counterpart, gM, and induces a neutralizing antibody response in the host.
