Halogen-bonded mesogens direct polymer self-assemblies up to millimetre length scale.

Aligning polymeric nanostructures up to macroscale in facile ways remains a challenge in materials science and technology. Here we show polymeric self-assemblies where nanoscale organization guides the macroscopic alignment up to millimetre scale. The concept is shown by halogen bonding mesogenic 1-iodoperfluoroalkanes to a star-shaped ethyleneglycol-based polymer, having chloride end-groups.

The role of oxygen in the liquid fermentation of wheat bran.

The extensive use of wheat bran as a food ingredient is limited due to its bitter taste and hard texture. To overcome these, some preprocessing methods, such as fermentation with yeast and lactic acid bacteria or enzymatic treatments have been proposed. The current work studied microbial communities, acidification, ethanol formation and metabolite profile of wheat bran fermented in either aerated or anaerobic conditions.

The PredictAD project: development of novel biomarkers and analysis software for early diagnosis of the Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia affecting 36 million people worldwide. As the demographic transition in the developed countries progresses towards older population, the worsening ratio of workers per retirees and the growing number of patients with age-related illnesses such as AD will challenge the current healthcare systems and national economies. For these reasons AD has been identified as a health priority, and various methods for diagnosis and many candidates for therapies are under intense research.

Description of Holtermanniella gen. nov., including Holtermanniella takashimae sp. nov. and four new combinations, and proposal of the order Holtermanniales to accommodate tremellomycetous yeasts of the Holtermannia clade.

The novel genus Holtermanniella is proposed here to accommodate four Cryptococcus species closely related to Holtermannia corniformis that are included in the Holtermannia clade (Basidiomycota, Agaricomycotina). Thus, four novel combinations are proposed: Holtermanniella nyarrowii comb. nov.

MCNP study for epithermal neutron irradiation of an isolated liver at the Finnish BNCT facility.

A successful boron neutron capture treatment (BNCT) of a patient with multiple liver metastases has been first given in Italy, by placing the removed organ into the thermal neutron column of the Triga research reactor of the University of Pavia. In Finland, FiR 1 Triga reactor with an epithermal neutron beam well suited for BNCT has been extensively used to irradiate patients with brain tumors such as glioblastoma and recently also head and neck tumors. In this work we have studied by MCNP Monte Carlo simulations, whether it would be beneficial to treat an isolated liver with epithermal neutrons instead of thermal ones.
