Empirical evidence shows that fully-connected neural networks in the infinite-width limit (lazy training) eventually outperform their finite-width counterparts in most computer vision tasks; on the other hand, modern architectures with convolutional layers often achieve optimal performances in the finite-width regime. In this work, we present a theoretical framework that provides a rationale for these differences in one-hidden-layer networks; we derive an effective action in the so-called proportional limit for an architecture with one convolutional hidden layer and compare it with the result available for fully-connected networks. Remarkably, we identify a completely different form of kernel renormalization: whereas the kernel of the fully-connected architecture is just globally renormalized by a single scalar parameter, the convolutional kernel undergoes a local renormalization, meaning that the network can select the local components that will contribute to the final prediction in a data-dependent way.

Thermosensory signals may contribute to the sense of body ownership, but their role remains highly debated. We test this assumption within the framework of pathological body ownership, hypothesising that skin temperature and thermoception differ between right-hemisphere stroke patients with and without Disturbed Sensation of Ownership (DSO) for the contralesional plegic upper limb. Patients with DSO exhibit lower basal hand temperatures bilaterally and impaired perception of cold and warm stimuli.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a life-limiting condition and the third leading cause of death worldwide. People with COPD experience physical and psychological symptoms and functional limitations that impair their quality of life. Their caregivers face adverse clinical outcomes due to personal, social, and financial demands.

Introduction: In recent years, the focus of research on obesity and its management has expanded beyond traditional dietary factors to include the timing of food intake - in relation to the body's circadian rhythms - known as chrononutrition. However, chrononutrition patterns remain largely unexplored in low-medium income countries. Our study aimed to investigate the association between chrononutrition patterns and BMI.

Non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (NDL-PCBs), as well as dioxin-like PCBs, are endocrine disruptors that persist in human and animal tissues worldwide. Due to their lipophilicity and resistance to enzymatic degradation, PCBs accumulate in fat deposits contributing to the onset of endocrine and metabolic diseases. Aquaporins (AQPs) are transmembrane channel proteins that allow the transport of water and small solutes.

This review examines the role of thermal interoception-awareness of body temperature-in shaping physiological states and its impact on physical, emotional, and social well-being. We describe the neural pathways and mechanisms involved in thermal processing and environmental heat exchange and how thermal interoception influences both autonomic and behavioral responses, contributing to survival and homeostasis. Additionally, the review highlights the significance of thermal signals and thermoregulation in determining higher-order cognitive and emotional functions, such as regulating sleep patterns and activity levels, monitoring physical well-being, regulating emotions, and even social interactions.

The mechanisms that determine distinct embryonic pallial identities remain elusive. The central role of Wnt signaling in directing dorsal telencephalic progenitors to the isocortex or hippocampus has been elucidated. Here, we show that timely inhibition of MAPK/ERK and BMP signaling in neuralized mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs) specifies a cell identity characteristic of the allocortex.

Breast cancer, a leading cause of cancer-related mortality in women, is characterized by genomic instability and aberrant gene expression, often influenced by noncanonical nucleic acid structures such as G-quadruplexes (G4s). These structures, commonly found in the promoter regions and 5'-untranslated RNA sequences of several oncogenes, play crucial roles in regulating transcription and translation. Stabilizing these G4 structures offers a promising therapeutic strategy for targeting key oncogenic pathways.

Aldolases are crucial enzymes that catalyze the formation of carbon-carbon bonds in the context of the anabolic and catabolic pathways of various metabolites. The bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens N3 can use naphthalene as its sole carbon and energy source by using, among other enzymes, the trans-o-hydroxybenzylidenepyruvate (tHBP) hydratase-aldolase (HA), encoded by the nahE gene. In this study, we present the crystallographic structures of tHBP-HA in three different functional states: the apo enzyme with a phosphate ion in the active site, and the Schiff base adduct bound either to pyruvate or to the substitute with '(R)-4-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-oxobutanoate'(intermediate state).

The enzymatic hydrolysis of cell wall polysaccharides results in the production of oligosaccharides with nature of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) that are perceived by plants as danger signals. The in vitro oxidation of oligogalacturonides and cellodextrins by plant FAD-dependent oligosaccharide-oxidases (OSOXs) suppresses their elicitor activity in vivo, suggesting a protective role of OSOXs against a prolonged activation of defense responses potentially deleterious for plant health. However, OSOXs are also produced by phytopathogens and saprotrophs, complicating the understanding of their role in plant-microbe interactions.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life-shortening disease that is caused by mutations in the CFTR gene, a gene that is expressed in multiple organs. There are several primary tissue models of CF disease, including nasal epithelial cultures and rectal organoids, that are effective in reporting the potential efficacy of mutation-targeted therapies called CFTR modulators. However, there is the well-documented variation in tissue dependent, therapeutic response amongst CF patients, even those with the same CF-causing mutation.

Protein folding represents a vital process for any living organism. While significant insights have been gained from studying single-domain proteins, our current knowledge on the folding mechanisms of multidomain proteins remains relatively limited, primarily due to their inherent complexity. The principal aim of this review lies in summarizing the emerging view pertaining multi-domain folding, emphasizing their modular nature, which minimizes misfolding and facilitates evolutionary innovation.

Ground-breaking awareness has been reached about the intricate and dynamic connection between developing tumors and the host immune system. Being a powerful arm of innate immunity and a functional bridge with adaptive immunity, the complement system (C) has also emerged as a pivotal player in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Its "double-edged sword" role in cancer can find an explanation in the controversial relationship between C capability to mediate tumor cell cytolysis or, conversely, to sustain chronic inflammation and tumor progression by enhancing cell invasion, angiogenesis, and metastasis to distant organs.

Objective: to study the anatomical feasibility of laser fiber insertion for interstitial thermal therapy via transorbital approach to the temporo-mesial structures (amygdala-hippocampus-parahippocampus complex).
Methods: Anatomical dissections were performed bilaterally on two human cadaveric heads via a transorbital approach, in which screws and laser fibers were used for magnetic resonance imaging-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (MRIgLITT) assisted by neuronavigation. In addition, eight transorbital trajectories were simulated using the transorbital entry points obtained from a cadaveric radiological study of four patients previously operated on for mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.
