Predicting the evolution of ascending aortic aneurysm (AscAA) growth is a challenge, complicated by the intricate interplay of aortic geometry, tissue behavior, and blood flow dynamics. We investigate a flow-structural growth and remodeling (FSG) model based on the homogenized constrained mixture theory to simulate realistic AscAA growth evolution. Our approach involves initiating a finite element model with an initial elastin insult, driven by the distribution of Time-Averaged Wall Shear Stress (TAWSS) derived from computational fluid dynamics simulations.

January 2025

Rheumatology Unit, Department of Childhood and Developmental Medicine, ASST Fatebenefratelli-Sacco, Milano, MI.

Involvement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) has been increasingly reported, affecting up to 87% of cases. This involvement generally occurs after the diagnosis of JIA has been established; however, in the authors' cases, as in a few others documented in the literature, patients presented with isolated TMJ arthritis as the sole joint involvement. The authors performed a narrative literature review on TMJ involvement in JIA and reported 2 cases that presented with isolated TMJ arthritis as the initial manifestation of JIA.

Semiconductor-metal hybrid nanoparticles (HNPs) are promising materials for photocatalytic applications, such as water splitting for green hydrogen generation. While most studies have focused on Cd containing HNPs, the realization of actual applications will require environmentally compatible systems. Using heavy-metal free ZnSe-Au HNPs as a model, we investigate the dependence of their functionality and efficiency on the cocatalyst metal domain characteristics ranging from the single-atom catalyst (SAC) regime to metal-tipped systems.

The efficiency of earth-abundant kesterite Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) solar cells has been lagging behind the Shockley-Queisser limit primarily due to the presence of deep-level defects. These deep-level defects cause critical issues such as short carrier diffusion length, significant band tailing, and a large open-circuit voltage (VOC) deficit, ultimately leading to low device efficiency. To address these issues, we propose a post-fabrication defect healing strategy by dip-coating the CZTSSe film in dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent.

The structures and rotational constants of prototypical monocyclic terpenes and terpenoids have been analyzed by a general computational strategy based on recent Pisa composite schemes (PCS) and vibrational perturbation theory at second order (VPT2). Concerning equilibrium geometries, a one-parameter empirical correction is added to bond lengths obtained by the revDSD-PBEP86 double hybrid functional in conjunction with a slightly modified cc-pVTZ-F12 basis set. The same functional and basis set give accurate harmonic frequencies, whereas the cheaper B3LYP hybrid functional in conjunction with a double-ζ basis set is employed to compute the semidiagonal cubic force constants needed to obtain vibrational corrections to the rotational constants in the framework of the VPT2 model.

Department of Biology, University of Florence, Via Madonna del Piano 6, Sesto Fiorentino, 50019, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent research shows that microbial interactions, rather than just individual isolates, significantly influence how well antibiotics work, especially in terms of persistence and tolerance.
  • The ability of microbes to bounce back after antibiotic exposure and get cleared is closely tied to the size of the surviving population and fluctuations in cell counts.
  • Our study emphasizes that the interactions among microbes in a community affect their recovery post-treatment, which we modeled through simulations of a three-member microbial community to illustrate these dynamics.

Intraoperative rescue of a dislodged renal stent during fenestrated endovascular aortic repair for treatment of type 1A endoleak.

J Vasc Surg Cases Innov Tech

February 2025

Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Cardio-Thoracic-Vascular Department, Integrated University Healthcare Giuliano-Isontina, University Hospital of Cattinara, Trieste, Italy.

In the past 15 years, fenestrated-branched endovascular aortic repair (F-BEVAR) has progressively become the first-line option for management of most complex abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs); with increasing experience, as well as persistent technological refinements, F-BEVAR indications have been expanded to include rescue of failures after prior EVAR. Despite the feasibility and effectiveness, F-BEVAR procedures in the presence of prior infrarenal endografts may come with higher technical complexity that should be properly anticipated, and several anatomical challenges can be expected. Among these, presence of suprarenal bare stents from prior EVAR device are certainly a frequent scenario and may sometimes make target vessel cannulation more difficult because of encroachment on the target vessel origins.

Stable isotope analysis has become a valuable tool for studying food chain processes and verifying the authenticity and geographical origin of typical products. The analysis is particularly important for those foods with geographical indications, such as Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena labelled with the protected designation of origin mark (ABTM PDO) and Aceto Balsamico di Modena with the protected geographical indication (ABM PGI). Understanding how the aging process affects the isotopic composition of specific compounds in ABTM is important for distinguishing between traditional and non-traditional products, as well as for verifying their authenticity.

Innovative payloads for ADCs in cancer treatment: moving beyond the selective delivery of chemotherapy.

Ther Adv Med Oncol

January 2025

Division of New Drugs and Early Drug Development, European Institute of Oncology, IRCCS, Via Giuseppe Ripamonti 435, Milan 20141, Italy.

Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) have emerged as a transformative approach in cancer therapy by enhancing tumor targeting and minimizing systemic toxicity compared to traditional chemotherapy. Initially developed with chemotherapy agents as payloads, ADCs have now incorporated alternative payloads, such as immune-stimulating agents, natural toxins, and radionuclides, to improve therapeutic efficacy and specificity. A significant advancement in ADC technology is the integration of Proteolysis Targeting Chimeras (PROTACs), which enable the precise degradation of cellular targets involved in tumorigenesis.
