Solid magnetic liposomes (ML, nanocomposites comprising lipid bilayers that incorporate magnetic nanoparticles) may be used in wastewater remediation: the lipid bilayer creates an environment where organic pollutants preferentially partition instead of water and the manipulation of ML with an external magnet enables an easy recovery from water. This study aimed to assess the system's potential for water remediation, focusing on ML ability to remove common pollutants in industrial wastewater. Specifically, alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO) were used as the archetype for organic pollutants.

The effect of epilepsy surgery on tonic-clonic seizures.

Epilepsia

January 2025

Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, Department of Neurology, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

Objective: Epilepsy surgery outcomes tend to be judged by the percentage in seizure reduction without considering the effect on specific seizure types, particularly tonic-clonic seizures, which produce the greatest morbidity and mortality. We assess how often focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures (BTCS) stop and how often they appear de novo after epilepsy surgery.

Methods: Analysis of a prospectively maintained epilepsy surgery database between 1986 and 2022 that characterizes the burden of BTCS after resective epilepsy surgery.

Background: Severe left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction (ejection fraction [EF] < 30%) is a known cardiovascular risk factor and a major cause of cardioembolism. However, less severe forms of LV disease (LVD), such as mild-to-moderate LV dysfunction and LV wall motion abnormalities (LVWMAs), are considered potential minor cardiac sources in Embolic Stroke of Undetermined Source (ESUS), but their role is underexplored. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of LVD in ESUS and its association with adverse vascular events and mortality.

Background: There are limited therapeutic options in cases of failed reperfusion (modified thrombolysis in cerebral infarction [mTICI] score < 2b) after stent-retriever and/or aspiration based endovascular treatment (EVT) for acute ischemic stroke. Despite the absence of data supporting its use, rescue therapy (balloon angioplasty and/or stent implantation) is often utilized in such cases. Studies are limited to large vessel occlusions, while the outcomes and complications after rescue therapy in medium/distal vessel occlusions (MDVOs) have not been reported.

Behind the scenes of EQA-characteristics, capabilities, benefits and assets of external quality assessment (EQA).

Clin Chem Lab Med

January 2025

Canadian Microbiology Proficiency Testing Program (CMPT), Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.

The main stakeholders in external quality assessment (EQA) programs are the participants, in whose interests these challenges are ultimately organised. EQA schemes in the medical field contribute to improving the quality of patient care by evaluating the analytical and diagnostic quality of laboratory and point-of-care tests (POCT) by independent third parties and, if necessary, pointing out erroneous measurement results and analytical or diagnostic improvement potential. Other benefits include the option of using EQA samples for other important laboratory procedures, such as the verification or validation of diagnostic medical devices (IVD-MDs), a contribution to the estimation of measurement uncertainty, a means of training and educating laboratory staff through educational EQA programmes or samples, or even for independent and documented monitoring of staff competence, such as on samples with unusual or even exceptional characteristics.

The therapeutic window of antibody drug-conjugates (ADC) remains challenging due to safety issues such as interstitial lung disease (ILD) observed with specific deruxtecan-based ADCs. To avoid ILD, we designed M9140 by conjugating the maleimide-containing hydrophilic β-glucuronide linker to exatecan and our anti-CEACAM5 (CarcinoEmbryonic Antigen-related Cell Adhesion Molecule 5) specific antibody. Following repeated iv-infusion at 3 to 30 mg/kg of M9140 every 3 weeks, the pathological findings obtained in cynomolgus monkeys were confined to gastrointestinal and hematolymphoid tissues and resembled the toxicity of exatecan.

Our objective is to determine the protein and complements constituents of Cord blood Platelet-rich plasma (CB-PRP), based on the hypothesis that it contains beneficial components capable of arresting or potentially decelerating the advancement of atrophic age-related macular degeneration (dry-AMD), with the support of radiomics. Two distinct pools of CB-PRP were assessed, each pool obtained from a total of 15 umbilical cord-blood donors. One aliquot of each pool respectively was subjected to proteomic analysis in order to enhance the significance of our findings, by identifying proteins that are shared between the two sample pools and gaining insights into the pathways they are associated with.
