The older citizens represent a portion of the population that is not only already high but is also expected to increase according to trend analyses from major national and international research reports. The pandemic experience has shown how they feel the scarcity of relationships and the loneliness of their homes as factors that significantly impact the quality of their daily lives. This challenging historical moment has provided an opportunity to implement a series of projects specifically dedicated to those over 65, aiming to ensure a full range of possibilities for them, starting from highly "enabling" processes.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles have attracted widespread attention as lubrication additives due to their tunable structures and surface effects. However, their solid lubrication properties have been rarely explored. This work introduces the positive role of moisture in solid lubrication in the case of a newly described Ti-based MOF (COK-47) powder.

Obesity exacerbates the risk and aggressiveness of many types of cancer. Adipose tissue (AT) represents a prevalent component of the tumor microenvironment (TME) and contributes to cancer development and progression. Reciprocal communication between cancer and adipose cells leads to the generation of cancer-associated adipocytes (CAAs), which in turn foster tumor invasiveness by producing paracrine metabolites, adipocytokines, and growth factors.

Background: Currently, there is limited scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of fluorescent cholangiography in emergency cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis. The primary aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of near-infrared fluorescent cholangiography (NIRF-C) in different severity degrees of acute cholecystitis.
Materials And Methods: Inclusion criteria were patients with a clinical and radiological (abdominal ultrasound and/or computed tomography) diagnosis of acute cholecystitis based on the revised 2018 Tokyo guidelines who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy within 24-72 h from the onset of symptoms and patients with ASA score of 0-3.

Aim: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of an active matrix metalloproteinase-8 (aMMP-8) point-of-care oral rinse test (POC-ORT) for predicting periodontitis in treatment-naïve subjects in two independent studies and update a recent meta-analysis.
Methods: The aMMP-8 POC-ORT index test was performed in a representative population in Hong Kong, China, and a consecutive convenience sample in Shanghai, China. The reference standard was the 2017 World Workshop classification of periodontal diseases.

Background: Dual regimen dolutegravir/lamivudine (DOL/3TC) showed potent efficacy and favourable safety in both antiretroviral therapy-naïve and -experienced patients, but data from real life about naive people with high-level viremia are still lacking.
Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of people living with HIV (PLWH) who were naive to antiretroviral therapy, had baseline HIV-1 RNA ranging from 100000 to 500000 copies/mL, and initated DOL/3TC. Virological efficacy and changes in immunological parameters after 12 months of treatment were evaluated and compared with highly viremic PLWH who started a triple antiretroviral combination.

The tumor microenvironment (TME) is integral to cancer progression, impacting metastasis and treatment response. It consists of diverse cell types, extracellular matrix components, and signaling molecules that interact to promote tumor growth and therapeutic resistance. Elucidating the intricate interactions between cancer cells and the TME is crucial in understanding cancer progression and therapeutic challenges.

Background: Poor quality of life in adults with anorexia nervosa (AN) and persistent high rates of readmission highlight the necessity of developing interventions to optimize treatment outcomes. ECHOMANTRA is a novel online intervention based on interventions for carers (Experienced Carers Helping Others, ECHO) and patients (Maudsley Model of Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults, MANTRA) with anorexia nervosa. The objective of this paper is to describe the study protocol of a randomized control trial (RCT) aimed at evaluating the efficacy of an adaptation of the ECHOMANTRA for adults AN inpatients and outpatients, and their carers, to be implemented as an add-on to treatment-as-usual (TAU).

We aimed to validate a reduced set of core items for continuous use across the country.
Methods: Factor analysis was used to validate the construct of the checklist.

Background: The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is now widely recognized as a marker of insulin resistance and has been linked to the development and prognosis of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) in numerous populations, particularly in the Eastern world. Although there are fewer reports from the Western world, and they are sometimes contradictory, the absence of definitive data on the relationship between a raised TyG index and cardiovascular risk suggested the opportunity of testing this biochemical marker against a well-established vascular marker such as the carotid intima media thickness (c-IMT).
Methods: Primary prevention patients were selected from a cohort of individuals who underwent c-IMT measurement between 1984 and 2018 at the Dyslipidemia Center at the ASST Grande Ospedale Metropolitano Niguarda in Milan, Italy.

Objective: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by high rates of comorbidity with other mental disorders, including anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Beyond a mere concept of comorbidity, recent literature is speculating the existence of a neurodevelopmental nature of such mental disorders. The aim of the study is to investigate the distribution of social-phobic, obsessive-compulsive and panic-agoraphobic traits within a sample of individuals with ASD, social anxiety disorder (SAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and panic disorder (PD).

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) emergency has represented a profound upheaval in the dynamics of infectious diseases transmission worldwide. This phenomenon has been at least in part driven by the introduction of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), implemented to counteract viral transmission. Our study aimed to assess the magnitude and the features of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the incidence of notifiable infectious diseases (NIDs) in the Lazio region, Italy.

Background: The increasing availability of sequenced genomes has enabled comparative analyses of various organisms. Numerous tools and online platforms have been developed for this purpose, facilitating the identification of unique features within selected organisms. However, choosing the most appropriate tools can be unclear during the initial stages of analysis, often requiring multiple attempts to match the specific characteristics of the data.

The Systemic Evolutionary Theory of the Origin of Cancer (SETOC) is a recently proposed theory founded on two primary principles: the cooperative and endosymbiotic process of cell evolution as described by Lynn Margulis, and the integration of complex systems operating in eukaryotic cells, which is a core concept in systems biology. The SETOC proposes that malignant transformation occurs when cells undergo a continuous adaptation process in response to long-term injuries, leading to tissue remodeling, chronic inflammation, fibrosis, and ultimately cancer. This process involves a maladaptive response, wherein the 'endosymbiotic contract' between the nuclear-cytoplasmic system (derived from the primordial archaeal cell) and the mitochondrial system (derived from the primordial α-proteobacterium) gradually breaks down.

As tailpipe emissions have decreased, there is a growing focus on the relative contribution of non-exhaust sources of vehicle emissions. Addressing these emissions is key to better evaluating and reducing vehicles' impact on air quality and public health. Tailoring solutions for different non-exhaust sources, including brake emissions, is essential for achieving sustainable mobility.
