cellular model systems provide a promising alternative to animal experiments for studying the intestine-organ axis.

Limiting animal experiments is essential for ethical issues and also because scientific evidence highlights the discrepancies between human and animal metabolism. This review aims to provide a critical discussion of the strengths and limitations of the most appropriate intestine model to answer complex research questions in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical fields. This review describes the components contributing to the definition of the gut barrier structure, from the outer mucus layer to the inner part of lamina propria, including endothelial and neuronal networks.

Therapeutic quality of exercise interventions for chronic low back pain: a meta-research study using i-CONTENT tool.

Objective: To assess the therapeutic quality of exercise interventions delivered in chronic low back pain (cLBP) trials using the international Consensus on Therapeutic Exercise aNd Training (i-CONTENT) tool and its inter-rater agreement.

Methods: We performed a meta-research study, starting from the trials' arms included in the published Cochrane review (2021) 'Exercise therapy for chronic low back pain'. Two pairs of independent reviewers applied the i-CONTENT tool, a standardised tool designed to ensure the quality of exercise therapy intervention, in a random sample of 100 different exercise arms.

Changes in adrenomedullin in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid with chorioamnionitis in a sheep-based model.

Background: Adrenomedullin (AM) is a potent angiogenic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory peptide protecting the developing lung from injury due to bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) of the preterm infant. At this stage, no data on the potential effects of chorioamnionitis (CA) occurrence and glucocorticoids (GC) administration on AM in developing lungs are still lacking.

Objective: to investigate, in a sheep-based model, the positive/side-effects of combined exposure to CA and GC on AM concentrations measured in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF).

Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) may be involved in dysfunction of pulmonary artery endothelial cells (PAEC) and, thus, in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) pathobiology. We screened the RNA expression profile of commercial human PAEC (hPAEC) exposed to increased hydrostatic pressure, and found that the lncRNA Down syndrome critical region 9 (DSCR9) was the most regulated transcript (log2FC 1.89 vs control).

Memantine and Amantadine KLVFF peptide conjugates: Synthesis, structure determination, amyloid-β interaction and effects on recognition memory in mice.

Background: Adamantane derivatives, such as memantine (Mem) and amantadine (Ada), have distinct mechanisms and therapeutic applications. Ada is primarily utilized as an antiviral and anti-Parkinson drug without significant pro-cognitive effects, Mem is effective in various clinical conditions characterized by cognitive deficits, including Alzheimer's disease. Recent evidence highlights a neuroprotective role for Aβ monomers, suggesting that preventing their aggregation into toxic oligomers could be a promising therapeutic strategy.

Association with Outcome of the Regurgitant-Volume Adjusted Right Ventricular Ejection Fraction in Secondary Tricuspid Regurgitation.

Background: In patients with secondary tricuspid regurgitation (STR), right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF) may not accurately reflect the actual RV systolic performance since a considerable amount of the RV stroke volume (SV) is regurgitated back into the right atrium. To overcome this limitation, we explored the association with the outcome of the effective RVEF (eRVEF), which accounts for the tricuspid regurgitant volume (RegVol).

Methods: 513 patients with STR (mean age 75±13 years, 39% atrial STR, 58% severe) underwent complete two-, three-dimensional, and Doppler echocardiography.

Challenges in treating patients with comorbid asthma and bronchiectasis.

The management of patients with overlapping asthma and bronchiectasis requires a tailored approach, starting with a comprehensive assessment of the patient's clinical profile, including the severity of asthma and the extent of bronchiectasis. Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are often recommended, but their use should be carefully monitored because of the risk of increased infection. If the asthma is well controlled and the bronchiectasis remains stable, a gradual reduction in the dose of ICS may be considered.

The 33 Acute Disease Quality Initiative meeting evaluated available data on the role of sex and gender in AKI and identified knowledge gaps. Data from experimental models, pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical care, gender, social determinants of health, education, and advocacy were reviewed.

A health economic evaluation of the multinational, randomized controlled CONVINCE trial - cost-utility of high-dose online hemodiafiltration compared to high-flux hemodialysis.

High-flux hemodialysis (HD) and high-dose hemodiafiltration (HDF) are established treatments for patients with kidney failure. Since HDF has been associated with improved survival rates compared to HD, we evaluated the cost-effectiveness of HDF compared to HD. Cost-utility analyses were performed from a societal perspective alongside the multinational randomized controlled CONVINCE trial.

Inspired by natural microbial cooperation, a co-culture approach was used to synthesize bacterial nanocellulose (BNC)-based nanocomposites for potential wound healing applications. By co-culturing either Komagataeibacter xylinus (K1G4) or the never tested strain K. rhaeticus (K2G46) with the hyaluronic acid (HA)-producer Lacticaseibacillus casei UMCC 2535, two BNC-HA nanocomposites were obtained (C1-K1 and C2-K2).

Cardiovascular risk factors begin in childhood and track into adulthood, increasing the possibility of impaired cardiometabolic health. Adopting healthy dietary patterns can help curb childhood obesity, a worrisome epidemic problem at present. In the era of personalized nutrition, dietary recommendations should be adapted to different stages of life, including children (older than 3 years) and adolescents.

Instruction-induced modulation of the visual stream during gesture observation.

Although gesture observation tasks are believed to invariably activate the action-observation network (AON), we investigated whether the activation of different cognitive mechanisms when processing identical stimuli with different explicit instructions modulates AON activations. Accordingly, 24 healthy right-handed individuals observed gestures and they processed both the actor's moved hand (hand laterality judgment task, HT) and the meaning of the actor's gesture (meaning task, MT). The main brain-level result was that the HT (vs MT) differentially activated the left and right precuneus, the left inferior parietal lobe, the left and right superior parietal lobe, the middle frontal gyri bilaterally and the left precentral gyrus.

Outcomes of Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection for High-Risk Colorectal Colitis-Associated Neoplasia in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Introduction: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients have an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer. High-risk colorectal colitis-associated neoplasia (HR-CAN) can be difficult to treat using traditional endoscopic resection methods. Aim of the study is to evaluate the outcomes of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) on IBD patients with HR-CANs.

Thermal ablation versus surgical resection of small-size colorectal liver metastases (COLLISION): an international, randomised, controlled, phase 3 non-inferiority trial.

Background: For patients with small-size colorectal liver metastases, growing evidence suggests thermal ablation to be associated with fewer adverse events and faster recovery than resection while also challenging resection in terms of local control and overall survival. This study assessed the potential non-inferiority of thermal ablation compared with surgical resection in patients with small-size resectable colorectal liver metastases.

Methods: Adult patients (aged ≥18 years) from 14 centres in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Italy with ten or fewer small-size (≤3 cm) colorectal liver metastases, no extrahepatic metastases, and an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0-2, were stratified per centre, and according to their disease burden, into low, intermediate, and high disease burden subgroups and randomly assigned 1:1 to receive either thermal ablation (experimental group) or surgical resection (control group) of all target colorectal liver metastases using the web-based module Castor electronic data capture with variable block sizes of 4, 6, and 8.

Background: Knowledge of the complex interplay between gut microbiota and human health is gradually increasing as it has just recently been a field of such great interest.

Summary: Recent studies have reported that communities of microorganisms inhabiting the gut influence the immune system through cellular responses and shape many physiological and pathophysiological aspects of the body, including muscle and bone metabolism (formation and resorption). Specifically, the gut microbiota affects skeletal homeostasis through changes in host metabolism, the immune system, hormone secretion, and the gut-brain axis.

Mitigating negative impacts of drought on oak seedlings performances through plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria.

Drought stress during the plant's growing season is a serious constraint to plant establishment in arid and semiarid Mediterranean ecosystems. Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) as environmentally friendly and innovative management approach can be used to produce seedlings better adapted to these environments. We tested native PGPR strains isolated from drought-tolerant tree and shrub species originating from two climatically contrasting regions: hot-dry (Dehloran) and milder Mediterranean climate (Ilam).

Biodiversity at risk in the SPAMI Pelagos Sanctuary: The impact of marine litter on biota.

The Mediterranean basin is the second largest global biodiversity hotspot in the world, which coexists with a plethora of anthropogenic stress. This study examines the risks that marine litter poses to Mediterranean biodiversity, using the Special Protection Area of Mediterranean Importance (SPAMI) "Pelagos Sanctuary" as a case study. In this paper, a new survey method and data analysis strategies to assess the impact of marine litter, including microplastics, on Mediterranean organisms, is proposed.

Assessing the photochemical mineralisation of dissolved organic carbon in lakes.

Photochemical mineralisation is an abiotic process by which the organic matter in natural waters, which is mostly dissolved, is eventually transformed into CO by the action of sunlight. The process has important implications for global C cycling, the penetration of sunlight into the water column, photochemical reactions, and microbial processes. Here we applied an approximated photochemical model to assess the extent of CO photogeneration by mineralisation of dissolved organic matter in lakes located between 60°S and 60°N latitude.

Vibro-tactile stimulation of the neck induces head righting in people with cervical dystonia.

Introduction: Cervical dystonia (CD) is characterized by involuntary neck muscle spasms that lead to abnormal head movements or postures. It is associated with somatosensory (tactile and proprioceptive) dysfunction. Here we tested whether vibro-tactile stimulation (VTS) of the cervical muscles constitutes a non-invasive form of neuromodulation of the somatosensory system that can provide temporary symptom relief for people with CD.

Incidence and survival of European adolescents and young adults diagnosed with sarcomas: EUROCARE-6 results.

Background: Epidemiological data for sarcoma in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) and across age groups are limited. We aim to: 1) update sarcoma incidence, survival, and changes over time in European AYAs; 2) provide an updated comparison of sarcoma survival in AYAs versus children and mature adults.

Methods: We calculated crude incidence rates (IR) per 100,000 European population per year from 2006 to 2013.

Sex differences in survival from melanoma of the skin: The role of age, anatomic location and stage at diagnosis: A CONCORD-3 study in 59 countries.

Background: CONCORD-3 highlighted wide disparities in population-based 5-year net survival for cutaneous melanoma during 2000-2014. Studies showed a survival advantage in women, but the reasons are not completely understood. We aim to estimate trends in age-standardised 5-year net survival by sex and to examine the role of age, anatomic location and stage on the survival advantage for women worldwide.

From collective to individual radon risk exposure: An insight into the current European regulation.

Radon (Rn) is a radioactive gas with well-documented harmful effects; the World Health Organization has confirmed it as a cancerogenic for humans. These detrimental effects have prompted Europe to establish national reference levels to protect the exposed population. This is reflected in European directive 59/2013/EURATOM, which has been transposed into the national regulations of EU Member States.
