Fractional flow reserve (FFR) and index of microcirculatory resistance (IMR) relationship in patients with chronic or stabilized acute coronary syndromes.

Aims: To investigate the influence of index of microcirculatory resistance (IMR) on fractional flow reserve (FFR) and adenosine-induced hyperemia (ΔPd/Pa-FFR) in patients with chronic (CCS) or stabilized acute coronary syndromes (ACS), utilizing various IMR threshold values.

Methods: Data were extracted from two ongoing Italian registries involving patients with CCS or stabilized ACS who underwent a #FullPhysiology approach [Pd/Pa, FFR, IMR, coronary flow reserve (CFR)] by bolus thermodilution technique in the left anterior descending artery. Correlations between IMR and both FFR and ΔPd/Pa-FFR were analyzed both globally and within three IMR-defined groups: Group 1 (IMR <25), Group 2 (25 ≤ IMR <40), and Group 3 (IMR ≥40).

Gut microbiota in Alzheimer's disease: understanding molecular pathways and potential therapeutic perspectives.

Accumulating evidence suggests that gut microbiota (GM) plays a crucial role in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis and progression. This narrative review explores the complex interplay between GM, the immune system, and the central nervous system in AD. We discuss mechanisms through which GM dysbiosis can compromise intestinal barrier integrity, enabling pro-inflammatory molecules and metabolites to enter systemic circulation and the brain, potentially contributing to AD hallmarks.

Hiatus and pelvic floor failure patterns in pelvic organ prolapse: A 3D MRI study of structural interactions using a Level III conceptual model.

Background: A large urogenital hiatus in Level III results in a higher risk of developing pelvic organ prolapse after birth and failure after prolapse surgery. Deepening of the pelvic floor and downward rotation of the levator plate have also been linked to prolapse. Currently we lack data that evaluates how these measures relate to one another and to prolapse occurrence and size.

T-branch by partial deployment technique in the endovascular repair of complex aortic and thoracoabdominal aneurysms with narrow or severe angulated para-visceral aorta.

Introduction/aim: The partial deployment technique (PDT) is an unconventional option of T-branch deployment to allow target arteries (TAs) cannulation/stenting from the upper arm access, in case of narrow (NPA: <25mm) or severely angulated (APA: >60°) aorta. Aim of this study was to report outcomes of the endovascular repair of complex aortic (c-AAAs) and thoracoabdominal (TAAAs) aneurysms by T-branch and PDT.

Burden of RSV infections among young children in primary care: a prospective cohort study in five European countries (2021-23).

Background: The majority of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections in young children are managed in primary care, however, the disease burden in this setting remains poorly defined.

Methods: We did a prospective cohort study in primary care settings in Belgium, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and the UK during the RSV seasons of 2020-21 (UK only; from Jan 1, 2021), 2021-22, and 2022-23. Children aged younger than 5 years presenting to their general practitioner or primary care paediatrician with symptoms of an acute respiratory tract infection were eligible for RSV testing.

Introduction And Importance: Diabetic foot ulcers, especially when complicated by cellulitis, pose a significant challenge in diabetes management, often leading to amputation. This case report highlights the successful treatment of a diabetic foot ulcer in an amputation candidate using a combination of negative pressure wound therapy and platelet-rich plasma injection, potentially reducing the risk of amputation in high-risk patients.

The paradox of a brain trying to study itself presents a conundrum, raising questions about self-reference, consciousness, psychiatric disorders, and the boundaries of scientific inquiry. By which means can this complex organ shift the focus of study towards itself? We aim at unpacking the intricacies of this paradox. Historically, this question has been raised by philosophers under different frameworks.

Real-time dose measurement in minibeam radiotherapy using radioluminescence imaging.

Purpose: Minibeam radiotherapy (MBRT) uses small parallel beams of radiation to create a highly modulated dose pattern. The aim of this study is to develop an optical radioluminescence imaging (RLI) approach to perform real-time dose measurement for MBRT.

Methods: MBRT was delivered using an image-guided small animal irradiator equipped with a custom collimator.

Nevertheless, primary resistance and disease progression is a critical clinical challenge. To properly address this issue, it is pivotal to understand the mechanisms of resistance to immunotherapy and tyrosine kinase inhibitors, that tumor eventually develop under treatment.

Clinical, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Framework of mHSPC and nmCRPC: A Multidisciplinary Consensus Project of the Italian Society for Uro-Oncology (SIUrO).

The recent evidences provided in metastatic hormone sensitive prostate cancer (nmHSPC) and in nonmetastatic castration resistant (nmCRPC) introduced the possibility to adopt Androgen Receptor Signaling inhibitor (ARSi) alone (both settings) or with chemotherapy (in mHSPC). In daily clinical practice there are some opening questions regarding the inclusion of next generation imaging, mainly PSMA-PET, how integrate local treatment as radiotherapy, how to select patients or drugs in a multiple-choice scenario, and how to manage patients with comorbidities and polypharmacy. These issues led the Italian Society for Uro-Oncology (SIUrO) to develop a consensus project involving all of the most important Italian scientific societies engaged in the multidisciplinary and multiprofessional management of the disease.

Screening of different lamellar solids for the adsorption of phenolic compounds from grape pomace.

Grape pomace (GP) is recognized as a valuable source of polyphenols, prompting research into new therapeutic molecules while enhancing this by-product value. To address low stability and bioavailability issues of phenolic compounds, lamellar solids emerge as a promising approach for their loading and stabilization in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical applications. A solid phase adsorption procedure was developed here by comparing the properties of eight solids towards GP polyphenols.

Disclosure of the nature of glycosylated varietal precursors of eugenol from the hybrid, tolerant grapevine variety Baco blanc: Methodology and quantification.

A varietal origin of eugenol was previously demonstrated in Baco blanc, a major grapevine variety used to produce Armagnac wine spirits. Ecological impacts of tire wear particles (TWPs) on microbial communities and biogeochemical cycles in freshwater remain largely unknown. Here, we conducted a microcosm experiment to investigate interactions between the overlying water and sediment without and with TWPs addition in a rural vs. urban lake system.

Protocol for high-yield bacterial expression and purification of the voltage-dependent anion channel 1 for high-throughput biophysical assays.

Voltage-dependent anion channel 1 (VDAC1) is a key protein in cellular metabolism and apoptosis. Here, we present a protocol to express and purify milligram amounts of recombinant VDAC1 in Escherichia coli. We detail steps for a fluorescence polarization-based high-throughput screening assay using NADH displacement, along with procedures for thermostability, fluorescence polarization, and X-ray crystallography.
