Preliminaries to artificial consciousness: A multidimensional heuristic approach.

Phys Life Rev

January 2025

Institute of Intelligent Systems and Robotics, CNRS, Sorbonne University, Paris, France.

The pursuit of artificial consciousness requires conceptual clarity to navigate its theoretical and empirical challenges. This paper introduces a composite, multilevel, and multidimensional model of consciousness as a heuristic framework to guide research in this field. Consciousness is treated as a complex phenomenon, with distinct constituents and dimensions that can be operationalized for study and for evaluating their replication.

Acidogenic fermentation of Ulva in a fed-batch reactor system: tubular versus foliose biomass.

Enzyme Microb Technol

December 2024

University of Galway, University Road, Galway H91 TK33, Ireland; Science Foundation Ireland MaREI Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine, Environmental Research Institute, University College Cork, Cork, Ireland.

The present study proposes a biorefinery of the macroalgae Ulva, focusing on evaluating two different morphologies of the species (foliose and tubular) during acidogenic fermentation in fed-batch reactors. Stage 1 of the study evaluates lyophilised foliose and tubular Ulva, whilst Stage 2 analyses the impact of ulvan extraction on volatile fatty acids yield and changes in carbohydrate availability. Acetic, propionic, and butyric acids were produced from each substrate, with peak concentrations of total VFAs recorded at 2179.

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics for free-surface and multiphase flows: a review.

Rep Prog Phys

January 2025

Istituto di Ingegneria del Mare Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Via di Vallerano 139, Roma, Lazio, 00128, ITALY.

The Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method is expanding and applied to more and more fields, particularly in engineering. The majority of current SPH developments deal with free-surface and multiphase flows, especially for situations where geometrically complex interface configurations are involved. The present review article covers the last 25 years of development of the method to simulate such flows, discussing the related specific features of the method.

Right ventricular injury (RVI) in respiratory failure receiving veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV ECMO) is associated with significant mortality. A scoping review is necessary to map the current literature and guide future research regarding the definition and management of RVI in patients receiving VV ECMO. We searched for relevant publications on RVI in patients receiving VV ECMO in Medline, EMBASE, and Web of Science.

Prognostic Value of Myocardial CT-ECV in Severe Aortic Stenosis Requiring Aortic Valve Replacement: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Eur Heart J Cardiovasc Imaging

January 2025

Department of Perioperative Cardiology and Cardiovascular Imaging, Centro Cardiologico Monzino IRCCS, Milan, Italy.

Aim: Computed tomography (CT)-derived extracellular volume fraction (ECV) is a non-invasive method to quantify myocardial fibrosis. Evaluating CT-ECV during aortic valve replacement (AVR) planning CT in severe aortic stenosis (AS) may aid prognostic stratification. This meta-analysis evaluated the prognostic significance of CT-ECV in severe AS necessitating AVR.

Rationale: Early detection, standardized therapy, adequate infrastructure and strategies for quality improvement should constitute essential components of every hospital's sepsis plan.

Objectives: To investigate the extent to which recommendations from the sepsis guidelines are implemented and the availability of infrastructure for the care of patients with sepsis in acute hospitals.

Methods: A multidisciplinary cross-sectional questionnaire was used to investigate sepsis care in hospitals.

Introduction: Central nervous system (CNS) infections represent some of the most critical pediatric health challenges, characterized by high mortality rates and a notable risk of long-term complications. Despite their significance, standardized guidelines for endocrinological follow-up of CNS infection survivors are lacking, leading to reliance on the expertise of individual centers and clinicians.

Background: Evidence-based medicine and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are helpful tools in the wound care field, but few studies correlating quality of life (QoL) changes with objective changes exist.

Objective: To investigate the QoL changes following the shift from primary dressings alone to elastic compression bandages in patients with a new diagnosis of vascular skin ulcer, and to evaluate a possible correlation between objective and subjective changes.

Materials And Methods: This study included 122 patients with a new diagnosis of vascular skin ulcer, who had previously used only primary dressings alone.

Purpose: This literature review synthetizes current evidence on the timing and efficacy of dexamethasone intravitreal injections for diabetic macular edema (DME) in patients undergoing cataract surgery, particularly phacoemulsification, to determine the optimal timing for improved outcome.

Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted across key databases to identify peer-reviewed studies, clinical trials, and meta-analyses addressing dexamethasone injections administered pre-, intra-, and post-operatively for DME in the context of cataract surgery. Studies were selected based on relevance to timing, visual outcomes, and inflammation control, with a focus on comparative efficacy.

"INSERT-COIN": A PROSPECTIVE STUDY OF COIN INGESTION IN CHILDREN OF SOUTHERN ITALY.

Am J Gastroenterol

December 2024

Pediatric Clinic, Department of Surgical and Biomedical Sciences, University of Perugia, 06123 Perugia, Italy.

Background And Aims: Coins are the most commonly ingested foreign bodies. When they get stuck in the distal esophagus there is no general agreement about the timing of their removal, since some of them may spontaneously migrate into the stomach, no longer requiring removal. We aimed at evaluating the gastric spontaneous passage of esophageal-retained coins, as well as complications.

Objectives: To prevent colorectal cancer (CRC), most patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) undergo (procto)colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis (IRA) or ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA). After surgery, these patients remain at risk of developing cancer in the remnant rectum or rectal cuff/pouch. We aimed to compare the long-term risk of cancer following IRA or IPAA in FAP.
