Clinical and molecular characteristics of KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae bloodstream infections: results of a multicentre study.

Objectives: KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) is a great cause of concern and it is often associated with bloodstream infections (BSIs) and a high mortality rate. We identified the risk factors of KPC-Kp BSIs observed in three Italian hospitals and studied the epidemiology of KPC-Kp strains.

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of KPC-Kp BSIs from 2014 to 2019 in three hospitals in Central Italy (Ancona, Pesaro-Fano, and Perugia).

Endurance is an equestrian discipline that primarily relies on aerobic metabolism. Intense aerobic exercise produces reactive oxygen species due to an imbalance between oxidant and antioxidant substances, known as oxidative stress, which may reduce athletic performance. This study evaluated the effects of a feed supplement containing natural antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids on the blood antioxidant activity and the athletic condition of endurance horses undergoing an exercise test.

Safety of ceftobiprole in patients with impaired renal, hepatic or immune function: a multinational retrospective hospital chart review (RETRACE study).

Ceftobiprole, an advanced-generation cephalosporin with broad bactericidal activity, is approved for community-acquired and hospital-acquired pneumonia (excluding ventilator-associated pneumonia). We aimed to evaluate, in a real-world setting, the safety profile of ceftobiprole in patients with risk conditions (severe renal impairment, hepatic impairment, and immunocompromised status), groups excluded from clinical trials. In this retrospective study (NCT04170309), 396 consecutive charts of patients treated with ceftobiprole during 2016-2022 in 15 centers in France, Italy, and Spain were analyzed: 62 had severe renal impairment, 51 had hepatic impairment, 120 were immunocompromised, and 203 had no predefined risk condition (controls).

Personality disorders (PDs) are psychiatric conditions characterized by enduring patterns of cognition, emotion, and behaviour that deviate significantly from cultural norms, causing distress or impairment. The aetiology of PDs is complex, involving both genetic and environmental factors. Genetic studies estimate the heritability of PDs at 30% to 60%, implicating genes involved in neurotransmitter regulation, such as those for serotonin transporters and dopamine receptors.

Screening for schistosomiasis in a non-endemic setting: accuracy of a rapid antibody test using finger prick blood.

Human schistosomiasis is a chronic neglected tropical disease caused by blood flukes of the genus Schistosoma, infecting 250 million people worldwide, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. Recently, thousands of cases have been reported in immigrants to non-endemic countries, including Italy. Serological screening is recommended but so far, no accurate point-of-care (POC) and lab-free test is available.

Introduction: Pulmonary high-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) includes small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) and large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC). The seventh and eighth editions of the TNM classification for lung cancer confirmed the applicability of this staging system for SCLC. With the proposal of N2 and M1c subcategories for the ninth edition classification, we assessed the applicability to NECs.

There is a much debate regarding optimal selection in patients with metastatic cancer who should undergo local treatment (surgery or radiation treatment) to the primary tumor and/or metastases. Additionally, the optimal treatment of newly diagnosed metastatic cancer is largely unclear. Current prognostication systems to best inform these clinical scenarios are limited, as all metastatic patients are grouped together as having Stage IV disease without further incorporation of patient and disease-specific covariates that significantly impact patient outcomes.

Methods: We enrolled consecutive adult patients with acute-onset NCSE and a previous stroke at a single institution undergoing CTP and EEG during symptoms. All patients underwent standard imaging including CT, CTP, CT angiograms and standard EEG within 30 min from hospital arrival.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a modality of extracorporeal life support which allows temporary support in cases of cardiopulmonary failure and cardiogenic shock. This study presents a valveless pump that works by the Liebau effect as a possible pumping system in ECMO circuits, replacing the current roller and centrifugal pumps. Chronotherapeutics are nonpharmacologic interventions whose development stems from investigations into sleep and circadian rhythm abnormalities associated with mood disorder. These therapies utilize controlled exposure to environmental cues (light, darkness) to regulate biologic rhythms. They encompass sleep-wake manipulations (partial/total sleep deprivation, sleep phase adjustment) and light therapy approaches.
