CAD-CAM complete digital dentures: An improved clinical and laboratory workflow.

J Prosthet Dent

December 2024

Associate Professor and Department Head, Department of Prosthodontics, University of Ferrara, Ferrara, Italy.

The purpose of this article was to present a novel clinical workflow for the fabrication of complete dentures using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) technology. The dental technique consists of 3 clinical steps and 2 laboratory phases that result in the production of 2 CAD-CAM milled complete denture bases with prefabricated teeth. The integration of analog and digital procedures and materials maximizes their benefits in the planning and fabrication of complete dentures, with the goal of improving clinical outcomes.

December 2024

Department of Chemistry "Ugo Schiff', University of Florence, Via della Lastruccia, 3-13, 50019, Sesto Fiorentino, Italy. Electronic address:

Bio-Layer Interferometry (BLI) has emerged as a versatile technique in affinity-based biosensing, analogous to Surface Plasmon Resonance. BLI enables real-time, label-free detection, and quantification of biomolecular interactions between an immobilized receptor and an analyte in solution. The BLI sensor comprises an optical fiber with an internal reference layer at the end and an external biocompatible layer where biological receptors are immobilized and exposed to the solution.

The small airways comprise generations 8 to 23 of the bronchial tree, consist of airways with an internal diameter <2mm, and are classically difficult to assess and treat in persistent asthma. Small airways dysfunction (SAD) is integral to the asthma management paradigm as it is associated with poorer symptom control, greater levels of type 2 inflammation, and has been proposed as a potential treatable asthma trait. Although identification of SAD by oscillometry has been found to be clinically useful in managing asthma, very few physicians, including specialists, use this technique as part of standard or adjunct evaluation of lung function to diagnose asthma, grade severity of airway obstruction, ascertain disease control or the risk for future exacerbations or to make management decisions.

In glioblastoma, glioma-associated microglia/macrophages (GAMs) represent the major population of tumor infiltrating cells, with up to one half of the cells of the tumor mass. Recent studies have shown that microglia are involved in the maintenance of immunological homeostasis and protection against autoimmunity. However, despite the growing body of evidence on the topic, many aspects are yet to be clarified.

Phosphodiesterase 2 A (PDE2A) function is stimulated by cGMP to catabolize cAMP. However, neurological and neurochemical effects of PDE2A deficiency are poorly understood. To address this gap, we studied behavioral characteristics and cerebral morpho-chemical changes of adult male heterozygous C57BL/6-PDE2A+/- (HET), and wild type C57BL/6-PDE2A+/+ (WT) mice.

Department of Pharmacy, School of Medicine, University of Naples Federico II, Via Domenico Montesano 49, 80131 Napoli, Italy. Electronic address:

Peptide-based self-assembled nanosystems show great promise as non-viral gene and siRNA delivery vectors. In the current study, we designed and functionalized nanofibers for the delivery of siRNA, targeting and silencing EGFR gene overexpressed in triple-negative breast cancer. The nanofiber-mediated siRNA delivery was characterized in terms of zeta potential, morphology, and structural stability by circular dichroism spectroscopy.

The AβA2V Paradigm: From Molecular Insights to Therapeutic Strategies in Alzheimer's disease and primary tauopathies.

Pharmacol Res

December 2024

Department of Molecular Biochemistry and Pharmacology, Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri IRCCS, Via Mario Negri 2, 20156, Milan, Italy. Electronic address:

Alzheimer's disease, the leading cause of dementia globally, represents an unresolved clinical challenge due to its complex pathogenesis and the absence of effective treatments. Considering the multifactorial etiology of the disease, mainly characterized by the accumulation of amyloid β plaques and neurofibrillary tangles of tau protein, we discuss the A673V mutation in the gene coding for the amyloid precursor protein, which is associated with the familial form of Alzheimer's disease in a homozygous state. The mutation offers new insights into the molecular mechanisms of the disease, particularly regarding the contrasting roles of the A2V and A2T mutations in amyloid β peptide aggregation and toxicity.

Infectivity in full-term placenta of Zika viruses with different lipid profiles.

Virus Res

December 2024

Department of Virology, Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie, Legnaro (PD), Italy.

Among flaviviruses, Zika virus (ZIKV) is the only arbovirus officially recognized as a teratogenic agent, as a consequence of its ability to infect and cross the placental barrier causing congenital malformation in the fetus. While many studies have focused on understanding ZIKV pathogenesis during pregnancy, the viral mechanisms affecting fetal development remain largely unclear. In this study, we investigated ZIKV virulence in placental trophoblasts, using viruses with distinct lipid profiles.

In this study, we address the challenge of analyzing electrophysiological measurements in neuronal networks. Our computational model, based on the Reservoir Computing Network (RCN) architecture, deciphers spatio-temporal data obtained from electrophysiological measurements of neuronal cultures. By reconstructing the network structure on a macroscopic scale, we reveal the connectivity between neuronal units.

People with severe mental disorders experience premature mortality compared with the general population. Several factors contribute to the mortality gap, including the adoption of unhealthy lifestyle behaviours, poor screening for physical illnesses, difficulties in accessing healthcare facilities, specific clinical features of mental disorders and some pharmacological treatment such as antipsychotic medications with serious metabolic side effects. In the present study, carried out in the framework of the LIFESTYLE trial, a funded nationwide multicentric study, we aimed to assess the impact of different antipsychotics in mediating the effectiveness of psychosocial intervention on healthy lifestyle behaviours.
