Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD), cognitive impairment and depression share common risk factors. Previous studies did not investigate the possible association between kidney function and cognitive and mood disorders in older persons in a broad range of kidney function. The present study explored associations between kidney function, cognition and mood in outpatients of 75 years and over.

Background: Loss of muscle mass and function may be more pronounced in older adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and with albuminuria. Thus, we investigated the prevalence of sarcopenia among community-dwelling older adults according to kidney function and grade of albuminuria. We also explored differences in the prevalence of sarcopenia according to three different equations for the estimation of glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).

Background: Different mechanisms connect the nutritional status with the occurrence and the course of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The end-stage renal disease is complicated by catabolic inflammatory reactions and cachexia which leads to malnutrition (undernutrition). On the other hand, obesity is an important risk factor for the development and acceleration of CKD.

Background: Reduced kidney function has become a major public health concern, especially among older people, as Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is associated with increased risk of end stage renal disease and mortality. Falls are a serious negative health outcome in older persons with one third of people aged 65 years experiencing a fall per year and increasing fall rates with increasing age. The impact of CKD on falls in older community-dwelling persons is not well investigated.

Background: Quality of life (QoL) refers to the physical, psychological, social and medical aspects of life that are influenced by health status and function. The purpose of this study was to measure the self-perceived health status among the elderly population across Europe in different stages of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).
Methods: Our series consisted of 2255 community-dwelling older adults enrolled in the Screening for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) among Older People across Europe (SCOPE) study.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is known to be associated with several co-occurring conditions. We aimed at exploring multimorbidity patterns associated with CKD, as well as the impact of physical performance and CKD severity on them in a population of older outpatients.
Methods: Our series consisted of 2252 patients enrolled in the Screening of CKD among Older People across Europe multicenter observational study.

From its start in China in December 2019, infection by the new SARS-CoV2 spread fast all over the world. It can present as severe respiratory distress in the elderly or a vasculitis in a child, most of whom are typically completely asymptomatic. This makes infection detection based on clinical grounds exceedingly difficult.

Unlabelled: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of levels of urinary total polyphenols considered as a proxy measure of polyphenol intake, with longitudinal changes of bone properties, in the InCHIANTI study. Dietary intake of polyphenols appears to be associated with future accelerated deterioration of bone health.
Introduction: Polyphenols, micronutrients ingested through plant-based foods, have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may contribute to osteoporosis prevention.

Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is correlated to amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and to non-amnestic mild cognitive impairment (naMCI). This study evaluated whether the T2D variable characterizes a peculiar cognitive profile in elderly patients. Moreover, it explores the association between glycated hemoglobin levels (HbA1c), T2D duration, insulin and oral hypoglycemic agent treatment, and cognition in elderly diabetic patients.

Background: Multi-morbidity and polypharmacy increase the risk of non-trivial adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in older people during hospitalization. Despite this, there are no established interventions for hospital-acquired ADR prevention.
Methods: We undertook a pragmatic, multi-national, parallel arm prospective randomized open-label, blinded endpoint (PROBE) controlled trial enrolling patients at six European medical centres.

Background And Objective: The relationship between anticholinergic burden and mortality is unclear, and the impact of anticholinergic burden on prognosis may vary in the presence of other conditions common in old age. We aimed to investigate the role of hand grip strength as a potential effect modifier in the association between anticholinergic burden and 1-year mortality in older patients discharged from hospital.
Methods: Our series consisted of 620 older patients consecutively admitted to seven geriatric and internal medicine acute care wards in the context of a prospective multicenter observational study.

The prognostic role of previous coronary artery bypass (CABG) in elderly patients admitted to hospital for an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the prognosis of patients aged ≥75 years admitted for an ACS with or without previous history of CABG. The primary outcome of the study was a composite of overall mortality, recurrent nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, and rehospitalization for heart failure at 1-year follow-up.

We aimed at investigating to what extent CKD may be staged interchangeably by three different eGFR equations in older people, and evaluating the source of discrepancies among equations in a population of 2257 patients older than 75 years enrolled in a multicenter observational study. eGFR was calculated by CKD-EPI, BIS and FAS equations. Statistical analysis was carried out by Bland-Altman analysis.

Vitamin D inadequacy is pervasive in the oldest-old. Many vitamin D metabolites are available for supplementation, their effects on the recovery of adequate serum levels remain unknown. We investigate the effects of supplementation with cholecalciferol (D3) and calcifediol (25D3) on serum levels of 25(OH)D, 1-25(OH)D, bone and inflammatory markers, ultimately identifying clinical predictors of successful treatment.

Patterns of DNA methylation, the best characterized epigenetic modification, are modulated by aging. In humans, different studies at both site-specific and genome-wide levels have reported that modifications of DNA methylation are associated with the chronological aging process but also with the quality of aging (or biological aging), providing new perspectives for establishing powerful biomarkers of aging. In this article, the role of DNA methylation in aging and longevity has been reviewed by analysing literature data about DNA methylation variations occurring during the lifetime in response to environmental factors and genetic background, and their association with the aging process and, in particular, with the quality of aging.

Background: Sarcopenia is common among older hospitalized adults but estimates vary according to definitions used. Aims of this study were to investigate the agreement between the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) and the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) Sarcopenia Project criteria and to compare the predictive value of both definitions for 3-year mortality.
Methods: Analysis was performed on 610 older hospitalized patients enrolled in the GLISTEN study.

Sarcopenia and cognitive impairment are associated with an increased risk of negative outcomes, but their prognostic interplay has not been investigated so far. We aimed to investigate the prognostic interaction of sarcopenia and cognitive impairment concerning 12-month mortality among older patients discharged from acute care wards in Italy. Cardiovascular diseases represent the leading cause of death and moderate physical exercise is associated with a reduction in cardiovascular risk. The aim of the study was to evaluate the correlation between the amount of exercise recorded daily by a wearable gravitometer for 3 months and selected biochemical and clinical parameters. Nineteen sedentary type 2 diabetics were recruited and distributed into three homogenous groups, low, medium, and high exercise, according to the level of physical exercise monitored and expressed as MOVEs.

Background: Recently the Berlin Aging Study II (BASE-II) showed that polypharmacy is associated with clinically relevant sarcopenia among community-dwelling older persons. Here we report findings from the GLISTEN study about the association of polypharmacy with sarcopenia among older medical in-patients.
Methods: The GLISTEN study investigated prevalence and clinical correlates of sarcopenia in older patients admitted to geriatric and internal medicine acute care wards of 12 Italian hospitals.
